Abstract

Methods and apparatus for associating an entity with at least one search query. Some implementations are directed to methods and apparatus for identifying multiple queries associated with an entity and identifying one or more of the queries as an entity search query that provides desired search results for the entity. Some implementations are directed to methods and apparatus for identifying a particular entity and, in response to identifying the particular entity, identifying an entity search query corresponding to the particular entity.

Claims (55)

1. A method implemented by one or more processors, comprising:

receiving a partial query entered in a search field, the partial query formulated by a user via a client device and being received prior to an indication that the partial query is a completed query;

matching the partial query to a first entity autocomplete query suggestion for a first entity, the first entity autocomplete query suggestion including at least one first term that matches the partial query and including a first entity descriptor that identifies the first entity;

matching the partial query to a second entity autocomplete query suggestion for a second entity, the second entity autocomplete query suggestion including the at least one first term that matches the partial query and including a second entity descriptor that identifies the second entity, wherein the second entity descriptor that identifies the second entity differs from the first entity descriptor that identifies the first entity;

providing the first entity autocomplete query suggestion and the second entity autocomplete query suggestion for display, at the client device in a drop down menu below the search field, as suggestions for the partial query;

identifying a selection, by the user via an input device of the client device, of the first entity autocomplete query suggestion or of the second entity autocomplete query suggestion; and

when the selection is of the first entity autocomplete query suggestion:

submitting, to a search system, a first entity query that is particularized to the first entity and that differs from the first entity autocomplete query suggestion, wherein the first entity query that is particularized to the first entity differs from the first entity autocomplete query suggestion at least in that the first entity query omits at least part of the first entity descriptor.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

when the selection is of the second entity autocomplete query suggestion:

submitting, to the search system, a second entity query that is particularized to the second entity and that differs from the second entity autocomplete query suggestion; and

providing, to the client device in response to the selection, one or more responsive search results from the search system.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first entity descriptor is a textual descriptor.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

assigning, prior to receiving the partial query, the first entity query to the first entity autocomplete query suggestion, wherein assigning the first entity query to the first entity autocomplete query suggestion is based on comparison of a determined query score for the first entity query to other query scores for other candidate queries that are each associated with the first entity.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising determining the query score for the first entity query based on entity ambiguity, of the first entity query, for the first entity.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one first term that matches the partial query comprises at least part of a first alias of the first entity and comprises at least part of a second alias of the second entity.

7. A system, comprising:

one or more non-transitory computer readable media storing instructions;

one or more processors operable to execute the instructions, wherein the instructions include instructions to:

receive a partial query entered in a search field rendered at a client device;

identify a plurality of autocomplete suggestions for the partial query, wherein in identifying the plurality of autocomplete suggestions one or more of the processors are to:

identify a first entity autocomplete query suggestion for a first entity, the first entity autocomplete query suggestion including at least one first term and including a first entity descriptor that identifies the first entity; and

identify a second entity autocomplete query suggestion for a second entity, the second entity autocomplete query suggestion including the at least one first term that matches the partial query and including a second entity descriptor that identifies the second entity, wherein the second entity descriptor that identifies the second entity differs from the first entity descriptor that identifies the first entity;

provide the first entity autocomplete query suggestion and the second entity autocomplete query suggestion for display, at the client device in a drop down menu below the search field, as suggestions for the partial query;

identify a selection, by the user via an input device of the client device, of the first entity autocomplete query suggestion or of the second entity autocomplete query suggestion; and

when the selection is of the first entity autocomplete query suggestion:

submit, to a search system, a first entity query that is particularized to the first entity and that differs from the first entity autocomplete query suggestion, wherein the first entity query that is particularized to the first entity differs from the first entity autocomplete query suggestion at least in that the first entity query omits at least part of the first entity descriptor.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein one or more of the processors are further to:

assign, prior to receiving the partial query, the first entity query to the first entity autocomplete query suggestion based on comparison of a determined query score for the first entity query to other query scores for other candidate queries that are each associated with the first entity.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein one or more of the processors are further to:

determine the query score for the first entity query based on entity ambiguity, of the first entity query, for the first entity.

10. The system of claim 7 , wherein one or more of the processors are further to:

when the selection is of the second entity autocomplete query suggestion:

submit, to the search system, a second entity query that is particularized to the second entity and that differs from the second entity autocomplete query suggestion; and

provide, to the client device in response to the selection, one or more responsive search results from the search system for display.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the first entity autocomplete query suggestion and the second entity autocomplete query suggestion are provided for display, at the client device, in a drop down menu below the search field.

12. At least one non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing computer instructions executable by at least one processor to perform a method comprising:

receiving a partial query entered in a search field, the partial query formulated by a user via a client device and being received prior to an indication that the partial query is a completed query;

matching the partial query to a first entity autocomplete query suggestion for a first entity, the first entity autocomplete query suggestion including at least one first term that matches the partial query and including a first entity descriptor that identifies the first entity;

matching the partial query to a second entity autocomplete query suggestion for a second entity, the second entity autocomplete query suggestion including the at least one first term that matches the partial query and including a second entity descriptor that identifies the second entity, wherein the second entity descriptor that identifies the second entity differs from the first entity descriptor that identifies the first entity;

providing the first entity autocomplete query suggestion and the second entity autocomplete query suggestion for display, at the client device in a drop down menu below the search field, as suggestions for the partial query;

identifying a selection, by the user via an input device of the client device, of the first entity autocomplete query suggestion or of the second entity autocomplete query suggestion; and

when the selection is of the first entity autocomplete query suggestion:

submitting, to a search system, a first entity query that is particularized to the first entity and that differs from the first entity autocomplete query suggestion,

wherein the first entity query that is particularized to the first entity differs from the first entity autocomplete query suggestion at least in that the first entity query omits at least part of the first entity descriptor.

13. The at least one non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 12 , wherein the method further comprises:

when the selection is of the second entity autocomplete query suggestion:

submitting, to the search system, a second entity query that is particularized to the second entity and that differs from the second entity autocomplete query suggestion; and

providing, to the client device in response to the selection, one or more responsive search results from the search system.

14. The at least one non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 12 , wherein the first entity descriptor is a textual descriptor.

15. The at least one non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 12 , wherein the method further comprises:

assigning, prior to receiving the partial query, the first entity query to the first entity autocomplete query suggestion, wherein assigning the first entity query to the first entity autocomplete query suggestion is based on comparison of a determined query score for the first entity query to other query scores for other candidate queries that are each associated with the first entity.

16. The at least one non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the method further comprises determining the query score for the first entity query based on entity ambiguity, of the first entity query, for the first entity.

17. The at least one non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 12 , wherein the at least one first term that matches the partial query comprises at least part of a first alias of the first entity and comprises at least part of a second alias of the second entity.
