Abstract

Various methods and systems are provided for health assessments of a fuel system. In one example, a fuel system includes a high-pressure fuel pump operable to increase fuel pressure from a first pressure to a second pressure, a common fuel rail fluidly coupling the high-pressure fuel pump to a plurality of fuel injectors each of which is operable to inject fuel to individual cylinders of an engine, a pressure sensor operable to detect a pressure of fuel at the common fuel rail, and a controller operable to diagnose a condition of the high-pressure fuel pump based on output from the pressure sensor.

Claims (38)

1. A fuel system, comprising:

a fuel pump operable to increase fuel pressure from a first pressure to a second pressure, the fuel pump including a plurality of pumping chambers, each pumping chamber including a piston actuatable by one or more cam lobes coupled to a common pump drive shaft, and each pumping chamber further including a respective check valve;

a common fuel rail fluidly coupling the fuel pump to a plurality of fuel injectors each operable to inject fuel to individual cylinders of an engine;

a pressure sensor operable to detect a pressure of fuel at the common fuel rail; and

a controller operable to:

sample output from the pressure sensor multiple times during at least one rotation of the drive shaft;

process the sampled output to obtain a pressure signal;

determine a plurality of peak magnitudes of the pressure signal, each peak magnitude corresponding to a pumping action of a respective pumping chamber of the plurality of pumping chambers; and

diagnose a condition of the fuel pump based on the output from the pressure sensor, the condition including a degraded check valve, the degraded check valve diagnosed as being weakly functional responsive to two peak magnitudes of the plurality of peak magnitudes per rotation of the drive shaft being less than a first threshold and greater than a second threshold.

2. The fuel system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is operable to diagnose the degraded check valve as non-functional responsive to two peak magnitudes of the plurality of peak magnitudes per rotation of the drive shaft being less than the second threshold.

3. The fuel system of claim 1 , wherein the condition includes a degraded cam lobe, and wherein the controller is operable to diagnose the degraded cam lobe as weakly functional responsive to one peak magnitude of a plurality of peak magnitudes per rotation of the drive shaft being less than the first threshold and greater than the second threshold.

4. The fuel system of claim 3 , wherein the controller is operable to diagnose the degraded cam lobe as non-functional responsive to one peak magnitude of the plurality of peak magnitudes per rotation of the drive shaft being less than the second threshold.

5. The fuel system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is operable to adjust one or more engine operating parameters responsive to diagnosing the condition.

6. The fuel system of claim 5 , wherein the one or more engine operating parameters comprise one or more of a fuel injection timing or an inlet metering valve position.

7. The fuel system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is operable to output a notification of the diagnosed condition and/or set a diagnostic code responsive to diagnosing the condition.

8. A fuel system, comprising:

a high-pressure fuel pump operable to increase fuel pressure from a first pressure to a second pressure, the high-pressure fuel pump including a plurality of pumping chambers, each pumping chamber including a piston actuatable by two cam lobes coupled to a common pump drive shaft and further including a respective check valve;

a common fuel rail fluidly coupling the high-pressure fuel pump to a plurality of fuel injectors each operable to inject fuel to individual cylinders of an engine;

a pressure sensor operable to detect a pressure of fuel at the common fuel rail; and

a controller operable to diagnose a condition of one or more check valves of the high-pressure fuel pump based on output from the pressure sensor, the diagnosing including:

sampling the output from the pressure sensor multiple times during at least one rotation of the drive shaft;

processing the sampled output to obtain a pressure signal; and

determining a plurality of magnitudes of the pressure signal, each magnitude corresponding to a pumping action of a respective pumping chamber of the plurality of pumping chambers.

9. The fuel system of claim 8 , wherein the condition of the one or more check valves comprises a weakly functional check valve, and wherein the controller is operable to diagnose the weakly functional check valve responsive to two magnitudes of the plurality of magnitudes per rotation of the drive shaft being greater than a setpoint average pump pressure and less than a predefined minimum pumping pressure.

10. The fuel system of claim 8 , wherein the condition of the one or more check valves comprises a degraded check valve, and wherein the controller is operable to diagnose the degraded check valve responsive to two magnitudes of the plurality of magnitudes per rotation of the drive shaft being within a threshold range of a setpoint average pump pressure.

11. A fuel system, comprising:

a fuel pump operable to increase fuel pressure from a first pressure to a second pressure, the fuel pump including a plurality of pumping chambers, each pumping chamber including a piston actuatable by one or more cam lobes coupled to a common pump drive shaft, and each pumping chamber further including a respective check valve;

a common fuel rail fluidly coupling the fuel pump to a plurality of fuel injectors each operable to inject fuel to individual cylinders of an engine;
