Abstract

Systems and methods for controlling the operation of a blow molder are disclosed. An indication of a crystallinity of at least one container produced by the blow molder may be received along with a material distribution of the at least one container. A model may be executed, where the model relates a plurality of blow molder input parameters to the indication of crystallinity and the material distribution and where a result of the model comprises changes to at least one of the plurality of blow molder input parameters to move the material distribution towards a baseline material distribution and the crystallinity towards a baseline crystallinity. The changes to the at least one of the plurality of blow molder input parameters may be implemented.

Claims (70)

1. A blow molder apparatus comprising:

a blow molder that comprises a plurality of molds, wherein each of the plurality of molds receives a plastic preform, and the blow molder stretches the plastic preforms by blowing fluid into the plastic performs to stretch the performs into desired shapes for plastic containers conforming to the molds; and

at least one processor and operatively associated memory, wherein the at least one processor is in communication with the blow molder and is programmed to:

receive an indication of a crystallinity of a first container produced by the blow molder;

2. The blow molder apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the fluid comprises air.

3. The blow molder apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the blow molder heats the plurality of molds; and

when the crystallinity of the first container produced by the blow molder exceeds a crystallinity threshold, the at least one processor and operatively associated memory instruct the blow molder to decrease the preform set temperature.

4. The blow molder apparatus of claim 3 , further comprising a near infrared (NIR) absorption spectroscopy sensor system for providing the indication of the crystallinity to the at least one processor.

5. The blow molder apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the at least one processor is further programmed to:

when the indication of the crystallinity is below a crystallinity threshold, instruct the blow molder to increase the preform set temperature by a first increment;

receive from the NIR absorption spectroscopy sensor system an indication of a crystallinity of a second container produced by the blow molder after the increase to the preform set temperature; and

when the crystallinity of the second container exceeds the crystallinity threshold, instruct the blow molder to decrease the preform set temperature.

6. The blow molder apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the blow molder heats the plastic preforms prior to reaching the molds;

when the crystallinity of the first container produced by the blow molder exceeds a crystallinity threshold, the at least one processor and operatively associated memory instruct the blow molder to increase the preform set temperature.

7. The blow molder apparatus of claim 6 , wherein:

the blow molder apparatus comprises a birefringence sensor system that is in communication with the at least one processor; and

the at least one processor receives the indication of crystallinity from the birefringence sensor system.

8. The blow molder apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the at least one processor is further programmed to:

determine that the indication of the crystallinity is below a crystallinity threshold;

instruct the blow molder to decrease the preform set temperature by a first increment;

receive from the birefringence sensor system an indication of a crystallinity of a second at least one container produced by the blow molder after the decrease to the preform set temperature;

determine that the crystallinity of a second at least one container is above the crystallinity threshold; and

instruct the blow molder to increase the preform set temperature.

9. The blow molder apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the blow molder apparatus further comprises a camera that is in communication with the at least one processor.

10. The blow molder apparatus of claim 9 , wherein:

the indication of the crystallinity of the first container comprises a haze status; and

the at least one processor is further programmed to:

receive from the camera an image showing a portion of a first container produced by the blow molder; and

derive from the image an indication of a haze status of the first container, wherein the haze status indicates a presence or absence of haze in the first container, and wherein the crystallinity of the first container exceeds the crystallinity threshold when the haze status indicates a presence of haze.

11. The blow molder apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the at least one processor is further programmed to:

determine that the haze status indicates an absence of haze;

instruct the blow molder to increase the preform set temperature by a first increment;

receive from the camera a second image showing a portion of a second container produced by the blow molder after the increase to the preform set temperature;

derive from the second image an indication of the haze status of the second container;

determine that the haze status of the second container indicates a presence of haze; and

instruct the blow molder to decrease the preform set temperature.

12. The blow molder apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the at least one processor is also programmed to:

derive from the first image a dimension of the first container; and

when the dimension of the first container is less than a dimension threshold, increase the preform set temperature.
