Abstract

There is disclosed a method of designing a panel assembly for a vibratory panel device, the assembly comprising a panel which supports vibrations and two or more transducers coupled to the panel to transmit vibrations to or receive vibrations from the panel. The method comprises: obtaining the number of transducers to be used in the assembly and their relative positions; obtaining relationships between drive signals to be applied to the respective transducers to provide a desired effect; determining an optimization criterion for the assembly that depends on the obtained relationships; and determining one or more parameters for the respective transducers that satisfy the optimization criterion. The one or more parameters may be selected from amplitudes of drive signals, spacing, activity, area, position, shape, dimension.

Claims (38)

1. A method comprising:

sensing, by N+M transducers of a device comprising a panel which supports vibrations and the N+M transducers connected to the panel, a user input on the panel;

receiving, by signal processing circuitry electrically connected to and configured to receive signals from or provide signals to each of the N+M transducers, N+M input signals generated from respective ones of the N+M transducers in response to the user input on the panel; and

processing, by the signal processing circuitry, the N+M input signals to produce N output signals corresponding to input signals from the N transducers of the N+M transducers,

wherein the input signals from the M transducers of the N+M transducers are used to correct the input signals from the N transducers for one or more phenomena affecting all of the N+M transducers other than the user input, and

wherein, N and M are integers greater than or equal to one.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the device is configured to sense acoustic vibrations and the input signals from the M transducers are used to reduce background noise in the input signals from the N transducers.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the device is configured to sense acoustic vibrations and the input signals from the M transducers are used to improve the sensitivity of the device to low frequency vibrations.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the device is configured to sense touch and the input signals from the M transducers are used to reduce the effects of common mode vibrations in the input signals from the N transducers.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein N is greater than M.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein M=N/2.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein M=1 and N=2.

8. A computer program product, encoded on one or more non-transitory computer storage media, comprising instructions that when executed by one or more computers cause the one or more computers to perform operations comprising:

receiving N+M input signals generated from respective ones of N+M transducers in response to a user input on a panel of a device comprising the panel which supports vibrations and the N+M transducers connected to the panel; and

processing the N+M input signals to produce N output signals corresponding to input signals from the N transducers of the N+M transducers,

wherein the input signals from the M transducers of the N+M transducers are used to correct the input signals from the N transducers for one or more phenomena affecting all of the N+M transducers other than the user input, and

wherein, N and M are integers greater than or equal to one.

9. The computer program product of claim 8 , wherein the device is configured to sense acoustic vibrations and the input signals from the M transducers are used to reduce background noise in the input signals from the N transducers.

10. The computer program product of claim 8 , wherein the device is configured to sense touch and the input signals from the M transducers are used to reduce the effects of common mode vibrations in the input signals from the N transducers.

11. The computer program product of claim 8 , wherein N is greater than M.

12. The computer program product of claim 11 , wherein M=N/2.

13. A device comprising:

a panel which supports vibrations,

N+M transducers connected to the panel, where N and M are integers greater than or equal to one; and

signal processing circuitry electrically connected to each of the N+M transducers and configured to:

receive N+M input signals generated from respective ones of the N+M transducers in response to a user input on the panel, and

process the N+M input signals to produce N output signals corresponding to the N transducers of the N+M transducers,

wherein the input signals from the M transducers of the N+M transducers are used to correct the input signals from the N transducers for one or more phenomena other than the user input affecting all of the N+M transducers.

14. The device of claim 13 , wherein the user input on the panel comprises acoustic vibrations, and wherein the input signals from the M transducers are configured to reduce background noise in the input signals from the N transducers.

15. The device of claim 13 , wherein the user input on the panel comprises touch, and wherein the input signals from the M transducers are configured to reduce the effects of common mode vibrations in the input signals from the N transducers.

16. The device of claim 13 , wherein the user input on the panel comprises acoustic vibrations, and wherein the input signals from the M transducers are configured to improve the sensitivity of the device to low frequency vibrations.

17. The device of claim 13 , wherein N=M/2.

18. The device of claim 16 , wherein M=1 and N=2.

19. The device of claim 13 , wherein the device is one of a mobile communications device, tablet computing device, or portable personal computer.

20. The device of claim 13 , wherein the panel comprises a substrate, a layer of electroactive material applied to the substrate and a layer of material applied to the electroactive material forming at least three separate active areas whereby signals may be applied to or received from respective areas of the electroactive material,
