Abstract

Methods and systems for automatically triaging an image study of a patient generated as part of a medical imaging procedure. One system includes a computing device including an electronic processor. The electronic processor is configured to submit at least a portion of the image study to a cognitive system, the cognitive system configured to analyze the image study using a model developed using machine learning, receive, from the cognitive system, a BI-RADS classification assigned to the image study using the model, and automatically triage the image study based on the classification assigned to the image study by the cognitive system.

Claims (20)

1. A system for automatically triaging an image study of a patient generated as part of a medical imaging procedure, the system comprising:

a computing device including an electronic processor configured to

submit at least a portion of the image study to a cognitive system, the cognitive system configured to analyze the image study using a model developed using machine learning,

receive, from the cognitive system, a BI-RADS classification assigned to the image study using the model,

assign a severity classification to the image study, wherein the electronic processor is configured to assign the severity classification by comparing an image included in the image study with an image included in a prior image study for the patient, and

in response to at least one of the BI-RADS classification and the severity classification being associated with a first level of risk, automatically perform a first action; and

in response to at least one of the BI-RADS classification and the severity classification being associated with a second level or risk, automatically perform a second action.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the BI-RADS classification includes an aggregate BI-RADS classification.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein image study is a first image study and the electronic processor is configured to assign the severity classification based on the BI-RADS classification for the first image study and a BI-RADS classification for a second image study for the patient.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the second image study for the patient was generated using a different modality than the first image study.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first action includes automatically generating a worklist for the image study.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the worklist defines at least one action to take to treat the patient.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first action includes automatically communicating with a resource allocation system to reserve at least one resource for treating the patient.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the resource allocation system includes a hospital system for reserving at least one selected from a group consisting of staff, a facility, and equipment.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the at least one resource includes a resource for performing a biopsy of the patient.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first action includes automatically generating a structured report for the image study accessible within a structured reporting system.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the electronic processor is further configured to submit the structured report to a radiologist for review and approval.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first action includes automatically determining a differential diagnosis for a patient associated with the image study.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the electronic processor is configured to automatically determine the differential diagnosis by accessing clinical data, analyzing the image study, and comparing the result of analyzing the image study with the clinical data.

14. The system of claim 1 , wherein the electronic processor is configured to automatically perform the first action in response to at least one of the BI-RADS classification and the severity classification being associated with a first level of risk based on at least one rule, the at least one rule associated with at least one selected from a group consisting of the patient, a facility, a radiologist, a network, a geographical area, and a type of imaging modality.
