Abstract

An ingestible device is disclosed which can produce spectral data of one or more analytes, as well as associated methods for characterizing the gastrointestinal tract of a subject which contains such analytes. Related kits and systems are also disclosed.

Claims (52)

1 . A device, comprising:

a spectrometer configured to generate spectral data of a sample within the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of a subject in vivo,

wherein the device is an ingestible device, and the spectral data comprises information useful to determine analyte information about the presence or absence of an analyte in the sample and/or an amount of the analyte in the sample.

274 . The device of claim 1 , further comprising a communications unit configured to transmit data to and/or receive operating parameters from a base station.

275 . The device of claim 274 , wherein the device and/or the base station comprises memory configured to store the spectral data and/or the analyte information.

276 . The device of claim 1 , further comprising a processing unit configured to generate the analyte information based on the spectral data.

277 . The device of claim 276 , wherein the processing unit is within the device.

278 . The device of claim 276 , wherein the device is configured to communicate with a processing unit within a base station that is external to the device.

279 . The device of claim 276 , wherein the processing unit is configured to compare the spectral data to one or more spectral standards to generate the analyte information.

280 . The device of claim 276 , wherein the processing unit is configured to generate subject information based on the analyte information and one or more inputs.

281 . The device of claim 280 , wherein the one or more inputs comprises information relating to the subject.

282 . The device of claim 280 , wherein the analyte information is based on the presence or absence of the analyte in the sample.

283 . The device of claim 280 , wherein the analyte information is based on a relative or a total amount of the analyte in the sample.

284 . The device of claim 282 , wherein the analyte comprises a biomolecule, a constituent of blood, a microorganism, a therapeutic agent, a drug, a biomarker, a pesticide, a pollutant, a fragment thereof, or a metabolite thereof.

285 . The device of claim 282 , wherein the analyte comprises a bile acid or a bile acid salt.

286 . The device of claim 282 , wherein the analyte comprises an antibiotic.

287 . The device of claim 282 , wherein the analyte is associated with a disease, a disorder, or a pathogen.

288 . The device of claim 282 , wherein the analyte comprises acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate, acetone, or a combination thereof.

289 . The device of claim 276 , wherein the analyte information is indicative that the subject has or is at risk of developing a disease or disorder.

290 . The device of claim 276 , wherein the analyte information is indicative of the amount of analyte ingested, absorbed, or metabolized by the subject.

291 . The device of claim 276 , wherein the processing unit is configured to search a database comprising spectral standards for a plurality of analytes.

292 . The device of claim 276 , wherein the processing unit is configured to display the analyte information.

293 . The device of claim 276 , wherein the processing unit is configured to display the subject information.

294 . The device of claim 276 , wherein the processing unit is configured to compare information regarding one or more of the spectral standards to the analyte information to determine the amount of analyte in the subject.

295 . The device of claim 276 , wherein the processing unit is configured to transmit the spectral data to a server and receive the analyte information from the server.

296 . The device of claim 1 , further comprising a processing unit configured to generate a drug absorbance profile based on the spectral data.

297 . The device of claim 1 , further comprising a processing unit configured to generate biomarker data for the subject based on the spectral data.

298 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the device is configured to generate the spectral data at a predetermined region within the GI tract of the subject.

299 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the device is operable to generate the spectral data at a plurality of time points as the device travels through the GI tract of the subject.

300 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the spectrometer is configured to generate at least one member selected from the group consisting of absorbance spectral data, transmission spectral data, reflectance spectral data, Fourier transform spectral data, and Raman spectral data.

301 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the device comprises a plurality of spectrometers configured to generate different types of spectral data.

302 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the spectral data comprises at least one member selected from the group consisting of ultraviolet spectral data, visible spectral data, near-infrared (NIR) spectral data, and mid-infrared (MIR) spectral data.

303 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the spectrometer comprises a 2-dimensional array of photodetectors.

304 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the spectral data comprises hyperspectral data.

305 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the spectrometer comprises a hyperspectral camera.

306 . A kit, comprising:

the device of claim 1 ; and

at least one ingestible standard, at least one detection agent, or a combination thereof.

307 . A system, comprising:

an ingestible device which comprises a spectrometer configured to generate spectral data of a sample within the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of a subject in vivo; and

a processing unit configured to generate subject information about the subject,

wherein the sample comprises an analyte, the spectral data comprises information useful to determine analyte information about the presence or absence of an analyte in the sample and/or an amount of the analyte in the sample, and the subject information is based on the spectral data.

308 . A method, comprising:

obtaining spectral data for at least one sample within the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of a subject in vivo, the spectral data comprising information about the presence or absence of an analyte in the sample and/or an amount of the analyte in the sample; and

using the spectral data to determine subject information about the subject.

309 . A method, comprising:

obtaining spectral data for at least one sample within the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of a subject in vivo; and

using the spectral data to generate a drug absorption profile of the subject.

310 . A method, comprising:

obtaining spectral data of for at least one sample within the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of a subject in vivo; and

using the spectral data to generate biomarker data of the subject.
