Abstract

A method for execution by a managing unit of a dispersed storage network (DSN) includes facilitating capture of log information from a plurality of entities of the DSN for storage in a log vault of the DSN. An error condition with regards to at least one of the plurality of entities can be detected. Error correlation information that includes an identified at least one of the plurality of entities can be generated based on the error condition and the log information. A DSN configuration change can be facilitated based on the error correlation information.

Claims (41)

1. A method for execution by a managing unit that includes a processor, the method comprises:

receiving log information from a plurality of entities of a distributed storage network (DSN) for storage in a vault of the DSN;

detecting an error condition with regards to at least one of the plurality of entities;

generating error correlation information that includes an identified at least one of the plurality of entities based on the error condition and the log information, wherein generating the error correlation information is based on:

retrieving the log information from the vault; and

identifying a pattern of the log information with a correlation factor greater than a correlation threshold level; and

issuing a message to the plurality of entities of the DSN that indicates a DSN configuration change based on the error correlation information.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of entities includes a plurality of storage units and further includes a plurality of access entities, wherein the plurality of access entities access a plurality of sets of encoded data slices stored in the plurality of storage units.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein at least one of the plurality of sets of encoded data slices is associated with a data object, and wherein the data object was dispersed storage error encoded to produce the plurality of sets of encoded data slices for storage in the plurality of storage units.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

storing the log information in the vault of the DSN.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein detecting the error condition includes receiving an exception error message.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein detecting the error condition includes retrieving previously captured log information from the vault, wherein the error condition is detected based on comparing the previously captured log information to the log information.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the vault is stored in at least one memory of the managing unit.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the DSN configuration change includes a change in at least one of: operations of the identified at least one of the plurality of entities or a storage capacity of the identified at least one of the plurality of entities.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein facilitating the DSN configuration change further includes facilitating rebuilding at least one encoded data slice associated with a storage error of the error condition.

10. A processing system of a managing unit comprises:

at least one processor;

at least one memory that stores operational instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the processing system to:

receive log information from a plurality of entities of a distributed storage network (DSN) for storage in a vault of the DSN;

detect an error condition with regards to at least one of the plurality of entities;

generate error correlation information that includes an identified at least one of the plurality of entities based on the error condition and the log information, wherein generating the error correlation information is based on:

retrieving the log information from the vault; and

identifying a pattern of the log information with a correlation factor greater than a correlation threshold level; and

issue a message to the plurality of entities of the DSN that indicates a DSN configuration change based on the error correlation information.

11. The processing system of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of entities includes a plurality of storage units and further includes a plurality of access entities, wherein the plurality of access entities access a plurality of sets of encoded data slices stored in the plurality of storage units.

12. The processing system of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the plurality of sets of encoded data slices is associated with a data object, and wherein the data object was dispersed storage error encoded to produce the plurality of sets of encoded data slices for storage in the plurality of storage units.

13. The processing system of claim 10 , wherein the operational instructions, when executed by the at least one processor, further cause the processing system to:

store the log information in the vault of the DSN.

14. The processing system of claim 10 , wherein detecting the error condition includes retrieving previously captured log information from the vault, wherein the error condition is detected based on comparing the previously captured log information to the log information.

15. The processing system of claim 10 , wherein facilitating the DSN configuration change includes issuing a message to the plurality of entities of the DSN that indicates the DSN configuration change.

16. The processing system of claim 10 , wherein the DSN configuration change includes a change in at least one of: operations of the identified at least one of the plurality of entities or a storage capacity of the identified at least one of the plurality of entities.

17. The processing system of claim 10 , wherein facilitating the DSN configuration change includes facilitating rebuilding at least one encoded data slice associated with a storage error of the error condition.

18. A computer readable storage medium comprises:

at least one memory section that stores operational instructions that, when executed by a processing system of a distributed storage network (DSN) that includes a processor and a memory, causes the processing system to:

receive log information from a plurality of entities of the DSN for storage in a vault of the DSN;

detect an error condition with regards to at least one of the plurality of entities;

generate error correlation information that includes an identified at least one of the plurality of entities based on the error condition and the log information, wherein generating the error correlation information is based on:

retrieving the log information from the vault; and

identifying a pattern of the log information with a correlation factor greater than a correlation threshold level; and

issue a message to the plurality of entities of the DSN that indicates a DSN configuration change based on the error correlation information.
