Abstract

A storage system includes a rack with a plurality of layers, each layer including an aisle and a plurality of rows extending from the aisle defining storage locations for items. A shuttle usable with the rack includes a first cart movable along the aisle and a second cart configured to be carriable by the first cart and to be movable along a row. The second cart is configured to carry an item between the first cart and the storage locations. A conveyor is located on one of the first or second carts to move the item onto or off the first cart. Related methods of storing and/or retrieving items from a rack are also disclosed. A rack system is disclosed and is readily assembled without welding, transferring loading so that the weight of the rack and any item stored therein is supported by the upright elements via support brackets.

Claims (41)

1. A system for moving items within a rack including an aisle and multiple rows that intersect the aisle, the system comprising:

a shuttle comprising:

a first cart comprising:

a first cart drive wheel;

a first drive operably coupled to the first cart drive wheel to drive the first cart drive wheel;

a conveyor;

a second drive operably coupled to the conveyor to drive the conveyor; and

a track portion below the conveyor; and

a second cart comprising:

a second cart drive wheel;

a third drive operably coupled to the second cart drive wheel to drive the second cart drive wheel;

a frame;

a top surface movable relative to the frame; and

a fourth drive operably coupled to the top surface to move the top surface relative to the frame from a lower position to an upper position,

wherein the second cart is receivable on the track portion such that the top surface of the second cart is below the conveyor when in the lower position and above the conveyor when in the upper position.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second cart is receivable on the track portion such that the second cart drive wheel engages the track portion.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the conveyor is a first conveyor, the track portion is a first track portion, and the first cart further comprises a second conveyor spaced apart from the first conveyor and a second track portion spaced apart from the first track portion, wherein the second drive is operably coupled to the second conveyor to drive the second conveyor in tandem with the first conveyor.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the second cart is receivable on the first and second track portions such that the second cart is between the first and second conveyors and such that the top surface of the second cart is below the first and second conveyors when in the lower position and above the first and second conveyors when in the upper position.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second cart further comprises a camming element, wherein the fourth drive is operably coupled to the camming element to rotate the camming element from a first position to a second position to cause the top surface to move from the lower position to the upper position.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the fourth drive is operably coupled to the top surface to move the top surface relative to the frame from the upper position to the lower position.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first cart further comprises a first power source operably coupled to the first and second drives to power the first and second drives, and wherein the second cart further comprises a second power source operably coupled to the third and fourth drives to power the third and fourth drives.

8. A shuttle comprising:

a first cart comprising:

a first cart drive wheel;

a first drive operably coupled to the first cart drive wheel to drive the first cart drive wheel;

a conveyor;

a second drive operably coupled to the conveyor to drive the conveyor; and

a track portion below the conveyor; and

a second cart comprising:

a second cart drive wheel;

a third drive operably coupled to the second cart drive wheel to drive the second cart drive wheel;

a frame;

a top surface movable relative to the frame; and

a fourth drive operably coupled to the top surface to move the top surface relative to the frame from a lower position to an upper position,

wherein the second cart is receivable on the track portion such that the top surface of the second cart is below the conveyor when in the lower position and above the conveyor when in the upper position.

9. The shuttle of claim 8 , wherein the second cart is receivable on the track portion such that the second cart drive wheel engages the track portion.

10. The shuttle of claim 8 , wherein the conveyor is a first conveyor, the track portion is a first track portion, and the first cart further comprises a second conveyor spaced apart from the first conveyor and a second track portion spaced apart from the first track portion, wherein the second drive is operably coupled to the second conveyor to drive the second conveyor in tandem with the first conveyor.

11. The shuttle of claim 10 , wherein the second cart is receivable on the first and second track portions such that the second cart is between the first and second conveyors and such that the top surface of the second cart is below the first and second conveyors when in the lower position and above the first and second conveyors when in the upper position.

12. The shuttle of claim 8 , wherein the second cart further comprises a camming element, wherein the fourth drive is operably coupled to the camming element to rotate the camming element from a first position to a second position to cause the top surface to move from the lower position to the upper position.

13. The shuttle of claim 8 , wherein the fourth drive is operably coupled to the top surface to move the top surface relative to the frame from the upper position to the lower position.

14. The shuttle of claim 8 , wherein the first cart further comprises a first power source operably coupled to the first and second drives to power the first and second drives, and wherein the second cart further comprises a second power source operably coupled to the third and fourth drives to power the third and fourth drives.
