Abstract

An illumination system, comprising: a light fixture including a driver coupled to a light source; a dimmer switch; and a dimmer switch interface, including: (i) a transformer having a first winding that is magnetically coupled to a second winding, the first winding being electrically coupled to the dimmer switch, and the second winding being electrically coupled to the driver of the light fixture, and (ii) a current source configured to power the transformer with an intermittent alternating current when the current source is energized.

Claims (45)

1. A light emitting diode (LED) light system comprising:

a plurality of LED devices;

a driver circuit electrically coupled to the plurality of LED devices; and

a dimmer switch interface comprising:

a transformer having a first winding and a second winding, the first winding being electrically coupled to at least one input terminal to receive a dimmer input voltage, the second winding being electrically coupled to the driver circuit to provide a dimmer output voltage, to the driver circuit, based on the dimmer input voltage, and the first winding being magnetically coupled to the second winding,

a current source electrically coupled to the second winding, and

a control circuit communicatively coupled to the current source and configured to:

detect the dimmer output voltage,

on a condition that the dimmer output voltage is below a threshold, determine that a dimmer switch is in a standby mode, and

on a condition that the dimmer switch is in the standby mode, provide a control signal to the current source, the control signal having a cycle comprising a first portion during which the control signal has a first duty cycle and a second portion during which the control signal has a second duty cycle greater than the first duty cycle.

2. The illumination system of claim 1 , wherein the first portion of the cycle has a shorter duration than the second portion of the cycle.

3. The dimmer switch interface of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first current converter electrically coupled between the at least one input terminal and the first winding, and

a second current converter electrically coupled between the at least one output terminal and the second winding.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the current source is configured to supply a current to drive the transformer, the current having a cycle comprising a first portion and a second portion, based on the control signal, the first portion having a higher current level than the second portion.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the dimmer switch interface further comprises:

a first current converter electrically coupled between the at least one input terminal and the first winding, and

a second current converter electrically coupled between the second winding and the driver.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the dimmer input voltage is 0-10V and the second duty cycle is 10% or less.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein one of the first portion of the cycle occurs before the second portion of the cycle and the first portion of the cycle occurs after the second portion of the cycle.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the driver circuit is configured to provide a drive current to the plurality of LED devices based on a level of the dimmer output voltage, the level of the drive current being low enough to turn off the plurality of LED devices on a condition that the dimmer input voltage is below a threshold.

9. The LED lighting system of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit comprises:

an analog-to-digital converter configured to detect the dimmer output current, and

a square wave generator configured to generate the control signal.

The dimmer switch interface of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit comprises a microprocessor configured to execute a program, which, when executed by the microprocessor, cause the microprocessor to detect dimmer output voltage, determine that the dimmer switch is in the standby mode, and provide the control signal to the current source.

11. A dimmer switch interface comprising:

at least one input terminal;

at least one output terminal;

a transformer having a first winding and a second winding, the first winding being electrically coupled to the at least one input terminal to receive a dimmer input voltage, the second winding being electrically coupled to the at least one output terminal to provide a dimmer output voltage based on the dimmer input voltage, and the first winding being magnetically coupled to the second winding;

a current source electrically coupled to the second winding; and

a control circuit communicatively coupled to the current source and configured to:

detect the dimmer output voltage,

on a condition that the dimmer output voltage is below a threshold, determine that a dimmer switch is in a standby mode, and

on a condition that the dimmer switch is in the standby mode, provide a control signal to the current source, the control signal having a cycle comprising a first portion during which the control signal has a first duty cycle and a second portion during which the control signal has a second duty cycle greater than the first duty cycle.

The dimmer switch interface of claim 11 , wherein the current source is configured to supply a current to drive the transformer, the current having a cycle comprising a first portion and a second portion, based on the control signal, the first portion having a higher current level than the second portion.

13. The dimmer switch interface of claim 11 , wherein the control circuit is further configured to:

on a condition that the dimmer output voltage is above the threshold, determine that the dimmer switch is not in the standby mode, and

on a condition that the dimmer switch is not in the standby mode, provide a control signal to the current source, the control signal having a constant duty cycle.

14. The dimmer switch interface of claim 11 , wherein the first portion of the cycle has a shorter duration than the second portion of the cycle.

The dimmer switch interface of claim 11 , wherein the current source is configured to supply a current to drive the transformer, the current having a cycle comprising a first portion and a second portion, based on the control signal, the first portion having a higher current level than the second portion.

16. The dimmer switch interface of claim 11 , wherein one of the first portion of the cycle occurs before the second portion of the cycle and the first portion of the cycle occurs after the second portion of the cycle.

17. The dimmer switch interface of claim 11 , wherein the control circuit comprises:

an analogic-to-digital converter configured to sample the dimmer output current, and

a square wave generator configured to generate the control signal.

The dimmer switch interface of claim 11 , wherein the control circuit comprises a microprocessor configured to execute a program, which, when executed by the microprocessor, causes the microprocessor to detect the dimmer output voltage, determine that the dimmer switch is in the standby mode, and provide the control signal to the current source.
