Abstract

A surgical instrument for treating the tissue of a patient is disclosed. The surgical instrument comprises a housing including a handle, a housing frame comprising a housing connector, and a drive system comprising at least one electric motor. The surgical instrument further comprises a shaft assembly releasably assembled to the housing including a shaft frame comprising a proximal connector and a distal connector, wherein the proximal connector is releasably coupled to the housing connector and a shaft drive system comprising at least one rotatable shaft operably coupled to the electric motor. The surgical instrument further comprises an end effector releasably assembled to the shaft assembly including an end effector frame comprising an end effector connector releasably coupled to the distal connector of the shaft assembly, a plurality of staple cartridges removably stored in the end effector, and a plurality of end effector drivers operably coupled to the rotatable shaft.

Claims (64)

1. A surgical stapler, comprising:

a housing, comprising:

a handle;

a housing frame comprising a housing connector; and

a drive system, comprising:

a first electric motor;

a second electric motor; and

a third electric motor;

a shaft assembly releasably assembled to said housing, comprising:

a shaft frame comprising a proximal connector and a distal connector, wherein said proximal connector is releasably coupled to said housing connector; and

a shaft drive system, comprising:

a first rotatable shaft operably coupled to said first electric motor;

a second rotatable shaft operably coupled to said second electric motor; and

a third rotatable shaft operably coupled to said third electric motor; and

an end effector releasably assembled to said shaft assembly, comprising:

an end effector frame comprising an end effector connector releasably coupled to said distal connector of said shaft assembly;

a plurality of staple cartridges removably stored in said end effector;

an anvil movable toward said end effector frame during a closing stroke and away from said end effector frame during an opening stroke; and

a plurality of end effector drivers operably coupled to said first rotatable shaft, said second rotatable shaft, and said third rotatable shaft, comprising:

an anvil driver configured to open and close said anvil;

a staple firing driver configured to reciprocatingly deploy said staple cartridges; and

a progression driver configured to move said end effector along a firing path.

2. The surgical stapler of claim 1 , further comprising a tissue cutting knife, wherein said plurality of end effector drivers further comprises a knife driver.

3. The surgical stapler of claim 1 , wherein said end effector further comprises:

a proximal portion;

a distal portion; and

an articulation joint rotatably connecting said distal portion to said proximal portion, wherein said plurality of end effector drivers comprises an articulation driver configured to articulate said distal portion relative to said proximal portion.

4. The surgical stapler of claim 3 , wherein said plurality of end effector drivers comprises a cartridge pusher configured to push one of said staple cartridges into said end effector.

5. The surgical stapler of claim 1 , wherein said shaft assembly further comprises a staple cartridge passage in communication with said end effector, and wherein said staple cartridge passage comprises an inlet through which said staple cartridges can be loaded into said staple cartridge passage.

6. The surgical stapler of claim 5 , wherein said shaft assembly further comprises an exterior, and wherein said inlet is accessible through said exterior.

7. The surgical stapler of claim 5 , wherein said staple cartridge passage is configured to store at least two staple cartridges therein.

The surgical stapler of claim 5 , wherein said staple cartridge passage is configured to store a first staple cartridge and a second staple cartridge, wherein said first staple cartridge comprises first staples having a first staple size, and wherein said second staple cartridge comprises second staples having a second staple size which is different than said first staple size.

The surgical stapler of claim 5 , wherein said staple cartridge passage is configured to store a first staple cartridge and a second staple cartridge, wherein said first staple cartridge comprises first staples having a first staple size, and wherein said second staple cartridge comprises second staples having a second staple size which is the same as said first staple size.

10. The surgical stapler of claim 5 , wherein each said staple cartridge comprises a plurality of staples releasably held together by an adhesive.

11. The surgical stapler of claim 5 , wherein each said staple cartridge comprises a plurality of staples releasably held together by a bioabsorbable material.

12. The surgical stapler of claim 1 , further comprising an electrical circuit extending through said housing, said shaft assembly, and said end effector.

13. The surgical stapler of claim 12 , wherein said housing connector, said proximal connector, said distal connector, and said end effector connector comprise electrical contacts which form a part of said electrical circuit.

14. The surgical stapler of claim 1 , wherein said plurality of staple cartridges comprises a number of staple cartridges, and wherein said end effector is usable for a number of uses that equals said number of staple cartridges.

15. The surgical stapler of claim 14 , wherein said shaft assembly is configured to be used a second number of uses that is larger than said number of uses.

16. The surgical stapler of claim 15 , wherein said housing is configured to be used a third number of uses that is larger than said second number of uses.

17. The surgical stapler of claim 1 , further comprising a synchronizing mechanism configured to synchronize the operation of at least two of said plurality of end effector drivers.

18. The surgical stapler of claim 1 , further comprising a sequencing mechanism configured to sequence the operation of at least two of said plurality of end effector drivers.

19. A surgical stapler, comprising:

a housing, comprising:

a handle;

a housing frame comprising a housing connector; and

a drive system comprising at least one electric motor;

a shaft assembly releasably assembled to said housing, comprising:

a shaft frame comprising a proximal connector and a distal connector, wherein said proximal connector is releasably coupled to said housing connector; and

a shaft drive system comprising at least one rotatable shaft operably coupled to said at least one electric motor; and

an end effector releasably assembled to said shaft assembly, comprising:

an end effector frame comprising an end effector connector releasably coupled to said distal connector of said shaft assembly;

a plurality of staple cartridges removably stored in said end effector;

an anvil movable toward said end effector frame during a closing stroke and away from said end effector frame during an opening stroke; and

a plurality of end effector drivers operably coupled to said at least one rotatable shaft, comprising:

an anvil driver configured to open and close said anvil;

a staple firing driver configured to reciprocatingly deploy said staple cartridges; and

a progression driver configured to move said surgical stapler along a firing path.

20. The surgical stapler of claim 19 , further comprising a tissue cutting knife, wherein said plurality of said end effector drivers further comprises a knife driver.

21. The surgical stapler of claim 19 , wherein said end effector further comprises:

a proximal portion;

a distal portion; and

an articulation joint rotatably connecting said distal portion to said proximal portion, wherein said plurality of end effector drivers comprises an articulation driver configured to articulate said distal portion relative to said proximal portion.

22. The surgical stapler of claim 21 , wherein said plurality of end effector drivers comprises a cartridge pusher configured to push one of said staple cartridges into said end effector.
