Abstract

Edema in tissue of a patient undergoing a course of radiation therapy or treatment can be estimated based on one or more MRI measurements used to measure changes in fluid content of various tissues. A correlation between observed changes in edema and one or more delivered fractions of radiation can be used to drive one or more clinical actions. Methods, systems, articles of manufacture, and the like are described.

Claims (29)

1. A system comprising:

an MRI system;

a radiation source; and

at least one non-transient machine-readable medium storing instructions which, when executed, cause the system to perform operations comprising:

capturing a baseline MRI scan and a subsequent MRI scan;

comparing a baseline edema analysis utilizing the baseline MRI scan with a subsequent edema analysis utilizing the subsequent MRI scan, at least by quantifying changes in free hydrogen content, to estimate a change in edema in patient tissues; and

controlling the radiation source to deliver a reduced amount of radiation during a subsequent fraction when the estimated change in edema exceeds an expected value.

2. A system as in claim 1 , wherein the baseline MRI scan and the subsequent MRI scan comprise at least one of: a T 1 -weighted MRI scan, a T 2 -weighted MRI scan, a ratio of T 1 -weighted MRI to T 2 weighted MRI scan results, and an MRI response ratio.

3. A system as in claim 1 , the operations further comprising controlling, during the subsequent fraction, the radiation source to deliver an increased amount of radiation when the change in edema is less than the expected value.

4. A system as in claim 1 , the operations further comprising generating an alert at a user interface after the comparing, the generating based on at least one of: the change in edema exceeding the expected value or being less than the expected value.

5. A system as in claim 1 , wherein the baseline MRI scan is captured prior to a fraction and the subsequent MRI scan is captured during the fraction.

6. A system as in claim 1 , wherein the baseline MRI scan and the subsequent MRI scan are captured during a same fraction.

7. A system as in claim 1 , wherein the baseline MRI scan is captured during a fraction and the subsequent MRI scan is captured between the fraction and the subsequent fraction.

8. A system as in claim 1 , the operations further comprising generating, at a display, a visual depiction of an estimate of an amount of cell death in the patient tissues.

9. A system as in claim 8 , the visual depiction including the use of voxels on a 2D map.

10. A system as in claim 8 , wherein the visual depiction comprises a differential change in a ratio of T 1 -weighted MRI to T 2 -weighted MRI scans and the differential change is presented as a function of location.

11. A computer program product comprising a non-transient machine-readable medium storing instructions which, when executed by a programmable processor, cause the programmable processor to perform operations comprising:

capturing a baseline MRI scan and a subsequent MRI scan with an MRI system;

comparing a baseline edema analysis utilizing the baseline MRI scan with a subsequent edema analysis utilizing the subsequent MRI scan, at least by quantifying changes in free hydrogen content, to estimate a change in edema in patient tissues; and

controlling a radiation source to deliver a reduced amount of radiation during a subsequent fraction when the estimated change in edema exceeds an expected value.

12. A computer program product as in claim 11 , wherein the baseline MRI scan and the subsequent MRI scan comprise at least one of: a T 1 -weighted MRI scan, a T 2 -weighted MRI scan, a ratio of T 1 -weighted MRI to T 2 -weighted MRI scan results, and an MRI response ratio.

13. A computer program product as in claim 11 , the operations further comprising controlling, during the subsequent fraction, the radiation source to deliver an increased amount of radiation when the change in edema is less than the expected value.

14. A computer program product as in claim 11 , the operations further comprising generating an alert at a user interface after the comparing, the generating based on at least one of: the change in edema exceeding the expected value or being less than the expected value.

15. A computer program product as in claim 11 , wherein the baseline MRI scan is captured prior to a fraction and the subsequent MRI scan is captured during the fraction.

16. A computer program product as in claim 11 , wherein the baseline MRI scan and the subsequent MRI scan are captured during a same fraction.

17. A computer program product as in claim 11 , the operations further comprising generating, at a display, a visual depiction of an estimate of an amount of cell death in the patient tissues.

18. A computer program product as in claim 11 , wherein the baseline MRI scan is captured during a fraction and the subsequent MRI scan is captured between the fraction and the subsequent fraction.

19. A computer program product as in claim 18 , the visual depiction including the use of voxels on a 2D map.

20. A computer program product as in claim 18 , wherein the visual depiction comprises a differential change in a ratio of T-weighted MRI to T 2 -weighted MRI scans and the differential change is presented as a function of location.
