Patient-Adapted and Improved Articular Implants, Designs and Related Guide Tools
Methods and devices are disclosed relating improved articular models, implant components, and related guide tools and procedures. In addition, methods and devices are disclosed relating articular models, implant components, and/or related guide tools and procedures that include one or more features derived from patient-data, for example, images of the patient's joint. The data can be used to create a model for analyzing a patient's joint and to devise and evaluate a course of corrective action. The data also can be used to create patient-adapted implant components and related tools and procedures.
1 . A method of designing a system for treatment of a joint of a patient, comprising:
receiving electronic image data associated with at least a portion of the joint;
deriving a surgical plan based, at least in part, on the electronic image data;
determining a minimum implant thickness based, at least in part, on information regarding the patient;
providing an implant component having:
a patient-adapted curvature in a first plane;
a standard curvature in a second plane;
a bone-facing surface; and
a joint-facing surface;
generating instructions to be utilized by a robotic control system to assist in at least a portion of a procedure to implant the implant component at an implantation site in the joint,
wherein the instructions are based, at least in part, on the surgical plan,
wherein the patient-adapted curvature is derived, at least in part, from the electronic image data,
wherein a thickness of the implant component at a given location is defined as the shortest distance from a point on the joint-facing surface at the given location to a point on the bone-facing surface nearest to the point on the joint-facing surface; and
wherein a smallest thickness of the implant is substantially equal to or greater than the minimum implant thickness.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first plane is a sagittal plane.
3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining a maximum implant thickness based at least in part on the surgical plan, and wherein a largest thickness of the implant is substantially equal to or smaller than the maximum implant thickness.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein a shape of the bone-facing surface includes at least a portion derived from a shape of the joint-facing surface and the minimum implant thickness.
5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the instructions include directions for the robotic control system to prepare at least a portion of the implantation site of the joint based on the shape of the bone-facing surface.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the instructions include directions for the robotic control system to prepare at least a portion of the implantation site by resecting portions of bone at the implantation site to correspond to the shape of the implant component's bone-facing surface.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the shape of the implant component's bone-facing surface includes a planar portion.
8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the shape of the implant component's bone-facing surface is substantially non-planar.
9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the second plane is a coronal plane.
10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the minimum implant thickness is based, at least in part, on the surgical plan.
11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein a design for the implant is based, at least in part, on the surgical plan.
12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the surgical plan is based, at least in part, on the implant component.
13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the implant is provided after the surgical plan is derived.
14 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the surgical plan is derived before the implant is provided.
15 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing the robotic control system.
16 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising modifying the surgical plan based on input from a surgeon.
17 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the instructions include information for guiding a surgeon during the procedure.
