Abstract

Apparatus for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation in a user, the apparatus comprising: a stimulation unit for electrically stimulating at least one nerve using electrical pulses; an electrode assembly connectable to the stimulation unit, the electrode assembly comprising a sensing unit, a storage unit, and a communications unit; and a control unit connected to the stimulation unit and the communications unit, the control unit being configured for controlling operation of the stimulation unit based on information from the electrode assembly.

Claims (22)

1. Apparatus for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation in a user, said apparatus comprising:

a stimulation unit for electrically stimulating at least one nerve using electrical pulses;

an electrode assembly connectable to said stimulation unit, wherein said electrode assembly is configured to be placed in contact with skin of the user; and

a control unit connected to said stimulation unit and said electrode assembly, said control unit being configured to (i) determine if said electrode assembly is in contact with the skin of the user, (ii) when said electrode assembly is determined to be in contact with the skin of the user, determine the amount of time that said electrode assembly has been in contact with the skin of the user, (iii) modify the amount of time that said electrode assembly has been in contact with the skin of the user by applying a multiplying factor which is a function of the intensity of the stimulation current that has passed through said electrode assembly so as to determine an intensity-modified amount of time that said electrode assembly has been in contact with the skin of the user, (iv) use the intensity-modified amount of time that said electrode assembly has been in contact with the skin of the user to determine whether the electrode assembly needs to be replaced with a new electrode assembly, and (v) notify the user to replace said electrode assembly with a new electrode assembly when the intensity-modified amount of time that said electrode assembly has been in contact with the skin of the user exceeds a threshold.

2. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said electrode assembly comprises a storage unit, and further wherein said storage unit comprises a non-volatile memory circuit.

3. Apparatus according to claim 2 wherein said non-volatile memory circuit is flash memory.

4. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said electrode assembly comprises a storage unit, and further wherein said storage unit comprises a wirelessly accessible circuit.

5. Apparatus according to claim 4 wherein said wirelessly accessible circuit is a radio frequency identification chip.

6. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said electrode assembly comprises a storage unit, and further wherein said storage unit stores data related to the amount of time that said electrode assembly has been in contact with the skin of the user.

7. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said electrode assembly comprises a communications unit, and further wherein said communications unit is a wired communications link.

8. Apparatus according to claim 7 wherein said wired communications link is 1-wire communication.

9. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said electrode assembly comprises a communications unit, and further wherein said communications unit is a wireless communication link.

10. Apparatus according to claim 9 wherein said communications unit is a radio frequency identification link.

11. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said control unit is configured to enable stimulation to be delivered through said electrode assembly when the intensity-modified amount of time that said electrode assembly has been in contact with the skin of the user is below the threshold.

12. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said control unit is configured to not deliver stimulation through said electrode assembly when the intensity-modified amount of time that said electrode assembly has been in contact with the skin of the user exceeds the threshold.

13. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said control unit is further configured to provide the user with predicted time remaining before electrode assembly replacement.

14. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said control unit is further configured to provide the user with a recommendation of the type of electrode assembly for the user to use.

15. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein notification is in the form of a sequence of electrical pulses which have a pattern distinct from the pattern of normal therapy pulses.

16. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein notification is in the form of a mechanical vibration.

17. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein notification is in the form a visual notification to the user.

18. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein notification is in the form of an audio notification to the user.

19. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the electrode assembly further comprises a sensing unit.
