Abstract

A self-closing device for implantation within a patient's body includes base material including an inner surface area for securing the base material to a tissue structure, and a plurality of support elements surrounding or embedded in the base material. The support elements are separable laterally within a plane of the base material to accommodate creating an opening through the base material for receiving one or more instruments through the base material, and biased to return laterally towards a relaxed state for self-closing the opening after removing the one or more instruments. The device may be provided as a patch or integrally attached to a tubular graft or in various shapes.

Claims (22)

1. An access port attachable to a surface within a patient's body, comprising:

a flexible, nonporous elastomeric base material defining a first end, a second end, a longitudinal axis extending therebetween, and a substantially continuous wall including inner and outer surfaces without any openings and defining opposite side edges that extend uninterrupted between the first and second ends;

a plurality of elastic elements embedded in the base material, each elastic element comprising first and second ends located adjacent the first and second ends of the base material, respectively, and an intermediate region extending between the elastic element first and second ends, intermediate regions of the elastic elements being disposed adjacent one another and unconnected to adjacent intermediate regions such that the intermediate regions are separable to accommodate creating a passage through the base material when an instrument is introduced therethrough and resiliently biased to substantially close the passage to automatically substantially seal any passage created through the base material by a needle or other instrument. and

fabric substantially surrounding the base material.

2. The access port of claim 1 , wherein the elastic elements impose a substantially continuous compressive force on the base material to enhance sealing a passage created through the base material.

3. The access port of claim 1 , wherein the elastic elements comprise a plurality of struts disposed adjacent one another in a relatively low energy state, the struts being separable to accommodate creating a passage through the base material between struts when an instrument is introduced therethrough, thereby directing the struts to a relatively high energy state, such that, when the instrument is removed, the struts are biased to return towards the relatively low energy state to substantially close the passage.

4. The access port of claim 1 , wherein the base material is biased to a curved configuration extending between the first and second ends.

5. The access port of claim 1 , wherein the base material defines a periphery defining an arc between about five and three hundred sixty degrees)(5-360° .

6. The access port of claim 5 , wherein the side edges are separable to facilitate attachment of the base material to a tissue structure, the base material biased to return towards the “C” shaped cross-section to enhance attaching the base material to the tissue structure.

7. The access port of claim 1 , wherein the intermediate regions of the elastic elements define a zigzag pattern.

8. The access port of claim 7 , wherein the zigzag pattern includes elements that extend transversely relative to the longitudinal axis.

9. The access port of claim 1 , wherein the elastic elements comprise a zigzag pattern that zigzags transversely relative to the longitudinal axis while the elastic elements extend generally axially between the first and second ends of the base material.

10. An access device for a tubular structure within a patient's body, comprising:

a nonporous base material comprising a first end, a second end, a longitudinal axis extending therebetween, and a continuous wall having a “C” shaped cross-section and inner and outer surfaces without any openings extending between the first and second ends and defining opposite side edges extending between the first and second ends;

a plurality of bands embedded in the base material, each band comprising a plurality of struts including spaces therebetween, the struts being separable laterally within a plane of the wall to accommodate creating a passage through the base material when an instrument is introduced through the base material and resiliently biased to return laterally when the instrument is removed to substantially close the passage to automatically substantially seal any passage created through the port body by the instrument; and

fabric covering the inner and outer surfaces of the base material comprising the plurality of bands.

11. The access device of claim 10 , wherein each band comprises first and second ends located adjacent the opposite side edges and an intermediate region extending between the first and second ends, the intermediate region comprising longitudinal struts extending substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis and curved connectors connecting alternate ends of the longitudinal struts to define a zigzag pattern such that the zigzag pattern extends between the side edges of the port body, the intermediate regions being unconnected to adjacent intermediate regions.

12. The access device of claim 11 , wherein the zigzag pattern of adjacent bands are in phase with one another.

13. The access device of claim 11 , wherein adjacent bands are partially nested within one another.

14. The access device of claim 11 , wherein adjacent bands are spaced apart from one another.

15. The access device of claim 10 , wherein the base material comprises multiple layers of elastomeric material.

16. The access device of claim 10 , wherein the bands are embedded within an intermediate region of the base material spaced apart from the first and second ends.
