Abstract

A system for removing plaque or thrombus from the vasculature and/or deployed medical devices is described. An embodiment can include a plaque reduction brush comprising at least one support adapted to allow the brush to be endoluminally deliverable via a delivery device to a treatment site; and a plurality of bristles extending from the at least one support and being arranged in a predetermined pattern along the at least one support, each of the plurality of bristles having a length, wherein one or more of the plurality of bristles has a bending portion along the length that is more easily bent than another portion of the length thereof, said bending portion facilitating bending of the one or more of the plurality of bristles between a compressed delivery configuration and an expanded use configuration.

Claims (18)

1 . A medical device including a plaque reduction brush said brush comprising:

at least one support adapted to allow said brush to be endoluminally deliverable via a delivery device to a treatment site; and

a plurality of bristles extending from the at least one support and being arranged in a predetermined pattern along the at least one support, each of the plurality of bristles having a length, wherein one or more of the plurality of bristles has a bending portion along the length that is more easily bent than another portion of the length thereof, said bending portion facilitating bending of the one or more of the plurality of bristles between a compressed delivery configuration and an expanded use configuration.

2 . A method of use of a medical device comprising:

obtaining a plaque reduction brush comprising:

at least one support adapted to allow said brush to be endoluminally deliverable via a delivery device to a treatment site; and

a plurality of bristles extending from the at least one support and being arranged in a predetermined pattern along the at least one support, each of the plurality of bristles having a length, wherein one or more of the plurality of bristles has a bending portion along the length that is more easily bent than another portion of the length thereof, said bending portion facilitating bending of the one or more of the plurality of bristles between a compressed delivery configuration and an expanded use configuration;

introducing the plaque reduction brush through a medical device delivery system to a treatment region; deploying the brush; and manipulating the brush to remove atherosclerotic debris.

3 . The method of claim 2 further comprising the step of employing a plaque or emboli capture system prior to deploying the device.

4 . The method of claim 2 further comprising the step of deploying the brush at a distal end of an endoluminal prosthesis.

5 . The method of claim 2 further comprising the step of capturing the debris within the brush bristles.

6 . A method of use of a medical device comprising:

obtaining a plaque reduction brush comprising:

at least one support adapted to allow said brush to be endoluminally deliverable via a delivery device to a treatment site; and

a plurality of bristles extending from the at least one support from and being arranged in a predetermined pattern along the at least one support, each of the plurality of bristles having a length, wherein one or more of the plurality of bristles has a bending portion along the length that is more easily bent than another portion of the length thereof, said bending portion facilitating bending of the one or more of the plurality of bristles between a compressed delivery configuration and an expanded use configuration;

introducing the plaque reduction brush through a medical device delivery system to a treatment region, establishing flow reversal, deploying the brush, and manipulating the brush to remove atherosclerotic debris.

7 . The method of claim 6 further comprising the step of deploying the brush at a distal end of an endoluminal prosthesis.

8 . The method of claim 6 further comprising the step of capturing the debris within the brush bristles.
