Abstract

An orthopedic impacting tool includes a motor-based drive assembly, an air chamber, a compression piston, an impacting element, an anvil element, and a broach adapter. The anvil element may include first and second faces and may be adapted to accept a portion of the broach adapter such that the broach adapter is proximate to the first face and distal to the second face. In operation, the motor-based drive assembly may cause the compression piston to move and compress air in a first portion of the air chamber or in a second portion of the air chamber. The impacting element may cyclically impact the first face of the anvil element upon application of compressed air from one of the first and second portions, and cyclically impact the second face of the anvil element upon application of compressed air from the other of the first and second portions.

Claims (54)

1. An orthopedic impacting tool for striking an object, comprising:

a motor-based drive assembly;

a compression piston operatively coupled to the motor based drive assembly;

an air chamber comprising a first portion and a second portion;

an impacting element;

a broach adapter adapted to retain a surgical instrument;

an anvil element comprising a first face and a second face, wherein the anvil element is adapted to accept a portion of the broach adapter, wherein

the broach adapter is operatively coupled to the anvil element, and

the broach adapter is proximate to the first face of the anvil element and distal to the second face of said anvil element; and

a processor circuit, wherein

the processor circuit directs the motor-based drive assembly to cause the compression piston to move and compress air within the first portion of the air chamber or compress air within the second portion of said air chamber, wherein

the impacting element cyclically impacts the first face of the anvil element upon application of compressed air from one portion of the first portion and the second portion of the air chamber, and

the impacting element cyclically impacts the second face of said anvil element upon application of compressed air from another portion of the first portion and the second portion of the air chamber,

such that the impacting element imparts a force upon the broach adapter in at least one direction.

2. The orthopedic impacting tool of claim 1 , wherein the motor-based drive assembly includes a linear motion converter.

3. The orthopedic impacting tool of claim 2 , wherein the linear motion converter comprises a slider crank mechanism.

4. The orthopedic impacting tool of claim 1 , wherein the motor based drive assembly comprise comprises a voice coil motor.

5. The orthopedic impacting tool of claim 1 , wherein the processor circuit allows for single percussive impacting.

6. The orthopedic impacting tool of claim 1 , further comprising a lighting element disposed on an exterior surface of the orthopedic impacting tool, wherein

the lighting element is operatively coupled to the processor circuit.

7. The orthopedic impacting tool of claim 1 , wherein a velocity of the impacting element is controlled by a speed at which the air is compressed or decompressed within the air chamber.

8. The orthopedic impacting tool of claim 1 , further comprising a positional sensor to determine whether the orthopedic impacting tool is being pushed toward the object or pulled away from the object, wherein

the positional sensor is operatively coupled to one of the processor circuit or the motor-based drive assembly.

9. The orthopedic impacting tool of claim 8 , wherein the positional sensor causes the processor circuit or motor-based drive assembly to:

direct the impacting element to impart a greater force upon said front face of said anvil element and a lesser force on said rear face of said anvil element upon sensing that the tool is being pushed toward the object, and

direct the impacting element to impart the lesser force upon said front face of said anvil element and the greater force on said rear face of said anvil element upon sensing that the tool is being pulled away from the object.

10. The orthopedic impacting tool of claim 1 , further comprising a torsion sensor to determine a lateral movement of the orthopedic impacting tool, and

signal such movement to the processor circuit.

11. The orthopedic impacting tool of claim 1 , wherein the broach adapter comprises an adjustment to offset the surgical instrument from a central axis of the orthopedic impacting tool while maintaining a parallel orientation of the surgical instrument with respect to the central axis of the orthopedic impacting tool.

12. The orthopedic impacting tool of claim 1 , wherein the broach adapter comprises a parallel four bar mechanism.

13. The orthopedic impacting tool of claim 1 , wherein the compression piston comprises a first end and a second end, wherein

the one portion of the first portion and the second portion is proximate to the first end of the compression piston, and

the another portion of the first portion and the second portion is proximate to the second end of said compression piston.

14. The orthopedic impacting tool of claim 1 , further comprising a hand grip.

15. The orthopedic impacting tool of claim 1 , wherein the surgical instrument is one of a broach, a chisel, and a reamer.

16. An orthopedic impacting tool for striking an object, comprising:

a motor-based drive assembly;

a compression piston operatively coupled to the motor based drive assembly, wherein the compression piston comprises a first end and a second end;

an air chamber comprising a first portion and a second portion, wherein

one portion of the first portion and the second portion is proximate to the first end of the compression piston, and

another portion of the first portion and the second portion is proximate to the second end of said compression piston;

an impacting element;

a broach adapter adapted to retain a surgical instrument;

an anvil element comprising a first face and a second face, wherein the anvil element is adapted to accept a portion of the broach adapter, wherein

the broach adapter is operatively coupled to the anvil element; and

a processor circuit, wherein

the processor circuit directs the motor-based drive assembly to cause the compression piston to move and compress air within the first portion of the air chamber or compress air within the second portion of said air chamber, wherein

the impacting element cyclically impacts the first face of the anvil element upon application of compressed air from the one portion of the first portion and the second portion of the air chamber, and

the impacting element cyclically impacts the second face of said anvil element upon application of compressed air from the another portion of the first portion and the second portion of the air chamber,

such that the impacting element is capable of imparting a force upon the broach adapter in at least one direction.

17. The orthopedic impacting tool of claim 16 , wherein the broach adapter is proximate to the first face of the anvil element and distal to the second face of said anvil element.
