Abstract

This disclosure includes various embodiments of couplers for coupling intraosseous (IO) devices and drivers, and various embodiments of drivers and kits.

Claims (24)

1. A coupler comprising:

a hollow sleeve including a first end and a second end, the hollow sleeve configured to be rotatably coupled to an intraosseous device while the hollow sleeve is coupled in a fixed relation to a driver, such that the intraosseous device is operable to rotate relative to the hollow sleeve when coupled together;

where the first end of the hollow sleeve includes an opening through which a portion of the intraosseous device extends when the hollow sleeve is rotatably coupled to the intraosseous device;

where the second end of the hollow sleeve has a recess configured to receive a portion of the driver;

where the second end of the hollow sleeve is configured to releasably engage the driver in the fixed relation such that rotation of the hollow sleeve relative to the driver is restricted; and

where the hollow sleeve is operable to permit the driver to rotate the intraosseous device when the hollow sleeve is releasably engaged to the driver in the fixed relation.

2. The coupler of claim 1 , where the recess has a circular cross-sectional shape.

3. The coupler of claim 1 , where the recess is defined by a cylindrical wall.

4. The coupler of claim 1 , where the recess has a circular central portion and one or more peripheral portions extending outwardly from the circular central portion.

5. The coupler of claim 1 , where the driver comprises a shroud portion; and where the hollow sleeve is configured to fit over the shroud portion of the driver to couple a driveshaft of the driver to the intraosseous device.

6. The coupler of claim 5 , where the shroud portion has one or more projections extending in a direction away from the drive shaft.

7. The coupler of claim 6 , where the one or more projections comprise two projections extending in opposite directions.

8. The coupler of claim 6 , where the shroud portion comprises one or more resilient portions and one or more substantially rigid portions, and the one or more projections extend from the one or more resilient portions such that the one or more projections are movable relative to the driveshaft.

9. The coupler of claim 6 , where the second end of the hollow sleeve has an interior surface defining a detent configured to receive the corresponding projection of the driver.

10. The coupler of claim 9 , where the driver has a resilient portion, and where the projection is disposed on the resilient portion.

11. The coupler of claim 10 , where the resilient portion is configured to be inserted into the second end of the hollow sleeve.

12. The coupler of claim 11 , where the resilient portion is configured to bend towards the driveshaft when the resilient portion is inserted a first length into the second end of the hollow sleeve; where the resilient portion is configured to return to a resting position and extend the projection into the detent of the hollow sleeve when the resilient portion is inserted a second length into the second end of the hollow sleeve; and where the second length is greater than the first length.

13. The coupler of claim 1 , where the driver comprises a shroud portion; where a projection is disposed on the shroud portion; and where the hollow sleeve is configured to fit over the shroud portion of the driver to couple a driveshaft of the driver to the intraosseous device.

14. The coupler of claim 13 , where the second end of the hollow sleeve has an interior surface defining a detent configured to receive the projection.

15. The coupler of claim 14 , where the shroud comprises a resilient portion, where the projection extends from the resilient portion, and where the resilient portion is configured to be inserted into the second end of the hollow sleeve.

16. The coupler of claim 15 , where the projection is operable to move relative to the driveshaft.

17. The coupler of claim 16 , where the resilient portion is configured to bend towards the driveshaft when the resilient portion is inserted a first length into the second end of the hollow sleeve.

18. The coupler of claim 17 , where the resilient portion is configured to return to a resting position and extend the projection into the detent of the coupler when the resilient portion is inserted a second length into the second end of the coupler; and where the second length is greater than the first length.

19. The coupler of claim 1 , where the driver comprises a shroud portion; and where a driveshaft of the driver extends from a body portion of the driver and into the shroud portion.
