Abstract

Accommodating intraocular lenses containing a flowable media and their methods of accommodation.

Claims (36)

1. An ophthalmic device, comprising:

an optic portion comprising an anterior optic surface, a posterior optic surface, and an optic fluid chamber;

a peripheral portion coupled to the optic portion and surrounding the optic portion;

wherein the ophthalmic device is configured to be implanted within a capsular bag of a subject,

wherein the peripheral portion comprises an interior volume filled with a fluid,

wherein the interior volume is in fluid communication with the optic fluid chamber,

wherein the anterior optic surface is configured to deform in response to a deformation of the peripheral portion due to capsular bag reshaping initiated by ciliary muscle movement undertaken by the subject,

wherein a segment of the peripheral portion comprises a radially outer peripheral wall and a radially inner peripheral wall closer to the optic portion than the radially outer peripheral wall, wherein a cross-sectional profile of the radially outer peripheral wall is curved radially outward away from the optic portion, and

wherein the peripheral portion comprises an anterior-most portion, and wherein the entirety of the anterior optic surface is disposed posterior to the anterior-most portion of the peripheral portion.

2. The ophthalmic device of claim 1 , wherein the peripheral portion circumferentially surrounds the optic portion.

3. The ophthalmic device of claim 1 , wherein the interior volume is a volume of a peripheral fluid chamber, wherein a segment of the peripheral fluid chamber surrounds a circumferential segment of the optic portion.

4. The ophthalmic device of claim 3 , wherein the anterior optic surface is configured to deform in response to a displacement of fluid from the peripheral fluid chamber to the optic fluid chamber in response to the deformation of the peripheral portion.

5. The ophthalmic device of claim 1 , wherein a power of the ophthalmic device is configured to change in response to the deformation of the anterior optic surface.

6. The ophthalmic device of claim 1 , wherein the peripheral portion is made in part of a flexible polymeric material.

7. The ophthalmic device of claim 1 , wherein a cross-sectional profile of the peripheral portion at one segment of the peripheral portion is D-shaped.

8. An ophthalmic device, comprising:

an optic portion comprising an optic fluid chamber;

a peripheral portion comprising a peripheral fluid chamber in fluid communication with the optic fluid chamber,

wherein the ophthalmic device is configured to be implanted within a capsular bag of a subject,

wherein an optic surface of the optic portion is configured to deform in response to a deformation of the peripheral portion due to capsular bag reshaping initiated by ciliary muscle movement undertaken by the subject,

wherein the peripheral portion comprises bellows comprising a repeating pleated-structure along at least a segment of the peripheral portion, and

wherein the peripheral portion comprises an anterior-most portion, and wherein the entirety of the optic surface is disposed posterior to the anterior-most portion of the peripheral portion.

9. The ophthalmic device of claim 8 , wherein the peripheral portion circumferentially surrounds the optic portion.

10. The ophthalmic device of claim 8 , wherein the optic surface is configured to deform in response to a displacement of fluid from the peripheral fluid chamber to the optic fluid chamber in response to the deformation of the peripheral portion.

11. The ophthalmic device of claim 10 , wherein the fluid is configured to be displaced through at least part of the bellows of the peripheral portion.

12. The ophthalmic device of claim 8 , wherein a power of the ophthalmic device is configured to change in response to the deformation of the optic surface.

13. The ophthalmic device of claim 8 , wherein the peripheral portion is made in part of a flexible polymeric material.

14. An accommodating intraocular lens assembly, comprising:

an accommodating optic with a deformable anterior surface, a posterior surface, and a fluid chamber adapted to house a fluid therein,

wherein the accommodating optic comprises a radially outer portion that extends radially outward relative to the deformable anterior surface;

a peripheral portion that extends further radially outward than the radially outer portion of the accommodating optic,

wherein the accommodating intraocular lens assembly is configured to be implanted within a capsular bag of a subject,

wherein the peripheral portion is configured to curve radially outward and engage with a curved equatorial portion of the capsular bag,

wherein the deformable anterior surface of the optic portion is configured to deform in response to a deformation of the peripheral portion due to capsular bag reshaping initiated by ciliary muscle movement undertaken by the subject, and

wherein the peripheral portion comprises an anterior-most portion, and wherein the entirety of the deformable anterior surface is disposed posterior to the anterior-most portion of the peripheral portion.

15. The accommodating intraocular lens assembly of claim 14 , wherein a power of the accommodating optic is configured to change in response to the deformation of the deformable anterior surface.
