Abstract

A dumbbell with a selectable number of weight disks includes a handle with pins projectable in opposing directions, a base assembly for accommodating two sets of weight disks standing upright, and having through-going openings. Neighbouring weight disks have mutually cooperating connecting arrangements which axially interconnect the weight disks but which permit radial separation. The projection lengths of the pins are stepwise selectable in order thereby to permit selection of the number of weight disks carried on the handle. The handle has, in opposing ends, connecting arrangements for interconnecting with the connecting arrangements of the innermost weight disks in the base assembly. Further, the space between the connecting arrangements of the handle is free through 360° about the handle throughout its entire length, the openings of the weight disks being centrally located.

Claims (32)

1. A dumbbell arrangement, comprising:

a base assembly;

a plurality of weight disks adapted to stand upright when disposed in first and second weight disk receiving portions of the base assembly;

a handle having first and second opposing ends, the first and second opposing ends of the handle each comprising handle connecting means for cooperation with first disk connecting means on ones of the plurality of the weight disks most proximally located relative to the first and second ends of the handle and disposed in the first and second weight disk receiving portions of the base assembly; and

the base assembly comprising first and second opposing inner ends, the first and second opposing inner ends of the base assembly each comprising base connecting means for cooperation with second disk connecting means on ones of the plurality of the weight disks most proximally located relative to the first and second opposing inner ends of the base assembly and disposed in the first and second weight disk receiving portions of the base assembly, wherein each base connecting means is one of a dovetail and a dovetail groove,

wherein the handle connecting means and the first disk connecting means are adapted to prevent axial movement and permit radial movement of the weight disks most proximally located relative to the first and second ends of the handle relative to the handle, and wherein the base connecting means and the second disk connecting means are adapted to prevent axial movement and permit radial movement of the weight disks most proximally located relative to the first and second inner ends of the base assembly and disposed in the first and second weight disk receiving portions of the base assembly.

2. The dumbbell arrangement as set forth in claim 1 , wherein, for each weight disk, the first disk connecting means is one of a dovetail and a dovetail groove.

3. The dumbbell arrangement as set forth in claim 2 , wherein, for each weight disk, the second disk connecting means is a dovetail when the first disk connecting means is a dovetail groove and the second disk connecting means is a dovetail groove when the first disk connecting means is a dovetail.

4. The dumbbell arrangement as set forth in claim 3 , wherein for each weight disk, the first disk connecting means is adapted to mate with the second disk connecting means.

5. The dumbbell arrangement as set forth in claim 4 , wherein, for each weight disk, the first disk connecting means is disposed on an opposite axial end of the weight disk from the second disk connecting means.

6. The dumbbell arrangement as set forth in claim 5 , wherein the one of the dovetail and the dovetail groove of the first disk connecting means and the one of the dovetail groove and the dovetail of the second disk connecting means both extend in a radial direction along respective axial ends of the weight disk and are wider at first radial ends than at second radial ends of the one of the dovetail and the dovetail groove of the first disk connecting means and the one of the dovetail groove and the dovetail of the second disk connecting means.

7. The dumbbell arrangement as set forth in claim 1 , wherein, for each weight disk, the first disk connecting means is disposed on an opposite axial end of the weight disk from the second disk connecting means.

8. The dumbbell arrangement as set forth in claim 7 , wherein, for each weight disk, the first disk connecting means is adapted to mate with the second disk connecting means.

9. The dumbbell arrangement as set forth in claim 1 , wherein, for each weight disk, the first disk connecting means is adapted to mate with the second disk connecting means.

10. The dumbbell arrangement as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the one of the dovetail and the dovetail groove is wider at one end than at an opposite end.

11. The dumbbell arrangement asset forth in claim 1 , wherein the weight disks each comprise through-going openings that are disposed in alignment with one another when the weight disks are arranged standing upright in the weight disk receiving portions of the base assembly, and the handle comprises pin members movable relative to respective ones of the first and second opposing ends in opposing axial directions and insertable into and removable from weight disks disposed in the first and second weight disk receiving portions of the base assembly, respectively.

12. A dumbbell arrangement, comprising:

a base assembly;

a plurality of weight disks adapted to stand upright when disposed in first and second weight disk receiving portions of the base assembly;

a handle having first and second opposing ends, the first and second opposing ends of the handle each being attachable to ones of the plurality of the weight disks most proximally located relative to the first and second ends of the handle and disposed in the first and second weight disk receiving portions of the base assembly; and

the base assembly comprising first and second opposing inner ends, the first and second opposing inner ends of the base assembly each comprising base connecting means for cooperation with second disk connecting means on ones of the plurality of the weight disks most proximally located relative to the first and second opposing inner ends of the base assembly and disposed in the first and second weight disk receiving portions of the base assembly, wherein each base connecting means is one of a dovetail and a dovetail groove,
