Abstract

Solutions are proposed to facilitate the support of 3GPP PS_Data_Off feature. The PS_Data_Off feature prevents transport via 3GPP access of all IP packets except those related to 3GPP PS_Data_Off Exempt Services. In one example, signaling storms due to frequent PS_Data_Off reconfiguration are prevented. In another example, for multi-SIM devices and for devices that supporting WiFi access, UE reconfigures the PS_Data_Off feature upon a triggering condition is satisfied. In yet another example, upon status change of PS_Data_Off feature, UE initiates RAT change to improve performance, to reduce power consumption and cost, and to maintain service continuity. Furthermore, new AT commands and parameters are introduced to enable the PS_Data_Off feature.

Claims (30)

1. A method, comprising:

establishing one or more packet data network (PDN) connections with a PDN gateway (PGW) by a User Equipment (UE) in a mobile communication network, wherein the PGW supports turning off packet-switched data traffic by enabling a PS_Data_Off feature;

transmitting an Attention (AT) command from an Application Processor (AP) to a modem, wherein the AT command is related to the PS_Data_Off feature; and

transmitting one or more PS_Data_Off indications from the modem to the network in response to the command, wherein the indication indicates a PS_Data_Off configuration, wherein the one or more PS_Data_Off indications are based on supporting of PS_Data_Off features of the corresponding one or more PDN connections.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the AT command is for activating or deactivating the PS_Data_Off configuration.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the command triggers the modem to send a session management (SM) or an enhanced session management (ESM) message to the network for each of the established PDN connections.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the command triggers the modem to send a session management (SM) or an enhanced session management (ESM) message to a corresponding PDN connection identified by a Context ID (CID).

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the command triggers the modem to send a session management (SM) or an enhanced session management (ESM) message to corresponding PDN connections identified by an access point name (APN).

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the PS_Data_Off indication indicates whether to turn off PS data traffic for roaming connections or non-roaming connections.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein one of the PDN connections is an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) connection established with an IMS server.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the AP sends another command to the modem for triggering sending another indication via a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) message to the IMS server.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the PS_Data_Off indication indicates whether to turn off PS data traffic for IMS connections or non-IMS connections.

10. A method, comprising:

establishing one or more packet data network (PDN) connections with a PDN gateway (PGW) by a User Equipment (UE) in a mobile communication network, wherein the PGW supports turning off packet-switched data traffic by enabling a PS_Data_Off feature; and

transmitting a command from an Application Processor (AP) to a modem, wherein the command is a read Attention (AT) command for querying a PS_Data_Off status or a PS_Data_Off support capability of each of the one or more PDN connections.

11. A user equipment (UE), comprising:

a connection handling circuit that establishes one or more packet data network (PDN) connections with a PDN gateway (PGW) in a mobile communication network, wherein the PGW supports turning off packet-switched data traffic by enabling a PS_Data_Off feature;

an Application Processor (AP) that transmits an Attention (AT) command, wherein the AT command is related to the PS_Data_Off feature; and

a modem that receives the command and in response transmits a PS_Data_Off indication to the network, wherein the indication indicates a PS_Data_Off configuration, wherein the one or more PS_Data_Off indications are based on supporting of PS_Data_Off features of the corresponding one or more PDN connections.

12. The UE of claim 11 , wherein the AT command is for activating or deactivating the PS_Data_Off configuration.

13. The UE of claim 11 , wherein the command triggers the modem to send a session management (SM) or an enhanced session management (ESM) message to the network for each of the established PDN connections.

14. The UE of claim 11 , wherein the command triggers the modem to send a session management (SM) or an enhanced session management (ESM) message to a corresponding PDN connection identified by a Context ID (CID).

15. The UE of claim 11 , wherein the command triggers the modem to send a session management (SM) or an enhanced session management (ESM) message to corresponding PDN connections identified by an access point name (APN).

16. The UE of claim 11 , wherein the PS_Data_Off indication indicates whether to turn off PS data traffic for roaming connections or non-roaming connections.

17. The UE of claim 11 , wherein one of the PDN connections is an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) connection established with an IMS server.

18. The UE of claim 17 , wherein the AP sends another command to the modem for triggering sending another indication via a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) message to the IMS server.

19. The UE of claim 11 , wherein the PS_Data_Off indication indicates whether to turn off PS data traffic for IMS connections or non-IMS connections.

20. A user equipment (UE), comprising:

a connection handling circuit that establishes one or more packet data network (PDN) connections with a PDN gateway (PGW) in a mobile communication network, wherein the PGW supports turning off packet-switched data traffic by enabling a PS_Data_Off feature; and

an Application Processor (AP) that transmits a command, wherein the command is a read Attention (AT) command for querying a PS_Data_Off status or a PS_Data_Off support capability of each of the one or more PDN connections.
