Abstract

Communication network architectures, systems and methods for supporting a network of mobile nodes. As a non-limiting example, various aspects of this disclosure provide autonomous vehicle network architectures, systems, and methods for supporting a dynamically configurable network of autonomous vehicles comprising a complex array of both static and moving communication nodes.

Claims (67)

1. A system for a node of a network of moving things comprising a plurality of nodes, the system comprising:

one or more processors operably coupled to at least one storage of the node for storing instructions of one or more software applications executable by the one or more processors and to a plurality of wireless communication interfaces of the node, the one or more processors operable to, at least:

monitor the plurality of wireless communication interfaces to determine respective operating status of each wireless communication interface;

receive, from a software application of the one or more software applications, a request to register a service supported by the software application, a service profile representative of data communication resource requirements of the service, and a priority of the service;

register the service at the node and configure one or more wireless communication interfaces of the plurality of wireless communication interfaces to enable operation of the registered service, based on a respective service profile and a respective priority of service of each service on the node, and based on the respective operating status of each wireless communication interface; and

following the registration and configuration, make the registered service active on the node by enabling access to the registered service by one or both of end-user devices and other nodes of the plurality of nodes.

2. The system according to claim 1 , wherein configuring the one or more wireless communication interfaces comprises:

allocating wireless capacity of the configured wireless communication interfaces, to the registered service.

3. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are further operable to, at least:

receive context information shared by one or more neighbor nodes of the node, wherein the context information is representative of one or both of operating conditions of the one or more neighbor nodes and quality of service of wireless communication by the one or more neighbor nodes; and

adjust a configuration of one or more wireless communication interfaces of the plurality of wireless communication interfaces and adjust allocation of wireless capacity of the one or more wireless communication interfaces, based upon the received context information, the respective service profile, and the respective priority of service of each service on the node.

4. The system according to claim 1 , where the one or more processors are further operable to, at least:

detect, at the node, an occurrence of a trigger event within a geographic region served by the network;

change an operating state of one or more services on the node, based on the detected trigger event; and

adjust a configuration of one or more wireless communication interfaces of the plurality of wireless communication interfaces and adjust allocation of wireless capacity of the one or more wireless communication interfaces, based upon the detected trigger event, the respective service profile, and the respective priority of service of each service on the node.

5. The system according to claim 4 , wherein the trigger event comprises detection of an approaching police, medical, or fire service vehicle.

6. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of wireless communication interfaces comprises:

at least one wireless communication interface that enables direct communication between the node and one or more other nodes of the network; and

at least one wireless communication interface configurable to directly communicate with a handheld end-user device and a WLAN access point, using a wireless local area network (WLAN) standard.

The system according to claim 1 , wherein the operating status of each wireless communication interface comprises one or both of the following: an indication of availability for use of the wireless communication interface and an indication of strength of a radio frequency signal received by the wireless communication interface.

The system according to claim 1 , wherein the operating status of each wireless communication interface comprises one or both of the following: an indication of quality of service provided by the wireless communication interface and an indication of unused data communication capacity of the wireless communication interface.

9. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the node is located on an autonomous vehicle and comprises a communication interface configured to directly communicatively couple with a system that controls movement of the autonomous vehicle.

The system according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of software applications comprises a software application that provides Internet access to one or more wireless-enabled end-user devices via a wireless communication interface of the plurality of wireless communication interfaces of the node.

11. A method of operating a node of a network of moving things comprising a plurality of nodes, the method comprising:

monitoring a plurality of wireless communication interfaces of the node, to determine respective operating status of each wireless communication interface;

receiving, from a software application of one or more software applications on the node, a request to register a service supported by the software application, a service profile representative of data communication resource requirements of the service, and a priority of the service;

registering the service at the node and configuring one or more wireless communication interfaces of the plurality of wireless communication interfaces to enable operation of the registered service, based on a respective service profile and a respective priority of service of each service on the node, and based on the respective operating status of each wireless communication interface; and

following the registration and configuration, making the registered service active on the node by enabling access to the registered service by one or both of end-user devices and other nodes of the plurality of nodes.

12. The method according to claim 11 , wherein configuring the one or more wireless communication interfaces comprises:

allocating wireless capacity of the configured wireless communication interfaces, to the registered service.

13. The method according to claim 11 , the method further comprising:

receiving context information shared by one or more neighbor nodes of the node, wherein the context information is representative of one or both of operating conditions of the one or more neighbor nodes and quality of service of wireless communication by the one or more neighbor nodes; and

adjusting a configuration of one or more wireless communication interfaces of the plurality of wireless communication interfaces and adjusting allocation of wireless capacity of the one or more wireless communication interfaces, based upon the received context information, the respective service profile, and the respective priority of service of each service on the node.

14. The method according to claim 11 , the method further comprising:

detecting, at the node, an occurrence of a trigger event within a geographic region served by the network;

changing an operating state of one or more services on the node, based on the detected trigger event; and

adjusting a configuration of one or more wireless communication interfaces of the plurality of wireless communication interfaces and adjusting allocation of wireless capacity of the one or more wireless communication interfaces, based upon the detected trigger event, the respective service profile, and the respective priority of service of each service on the node.

15. The method according to claim 14 , wherein the trigger event comprises detection of an approaching police, medical, or fire service vehicle.

16. The method according to claim 11 , wherein the plurality of wireless communication interfaces comprises:

at least one wireless communication interface that enables direct communication between the node and one or more other nodes of the network; and

at least one wireless communication interface configurable to directly communicate with a handheld end-user device and a WLAN access point, using a wireless local area network (WLAN) standard.

The method according to claim 11 , wherein the operating status of each wireless communication interface comprises one or both of an indication of availability for use of the wireless communication interface and an indication of strength of a radio frequency signal received by the wireless communication interface.

The method according to claim 11 , wherein the operating status of each wireless communication interface comprises one or both of an indication of quality of service provided by the wireless communication interface and an indication of unused data communication capacity of the wireless communication interface.

19. The method according to claim 11 , wherein the node is located on an autonomous vehicle and comprises a communication interface configured to directly communicatively couple with a system that controls movement of the autonomous vehicle.

20. The method according to claim 11 , wherein the plurality of software applications comprises a software application that provides Internet access to one or more wireless-enabled end-user devices via a wireless communication interface of the plurality of wireless communication interfaces of the node.

21. A non-transitory computer-readable medium on which is stored a plurality of code sections, each code section comprising a plurality of instructions executable by one or more processors, the instructions causing the one or more processors to perform the actions of a method of operating a node of a network of moving things comprising a plurality of nodes, the steps of the method comprising:

monitoring a plurality of wireless communication interfaces of the node, to determine respective operating status of each wireless communication interface;

receiving, from a software application of one or more software applications on the node, a request to register a service supported by the software application, a service profile representative of data communication resource requirements of the service, and a priority of the service;

registering the service at the node and configuring one or more wireless communication interfaces of the plurality of wireless communication interfaces to enable operation of the registered service, based on a respective service profile and a respective priority of service of each service on the node, and based on the respective operating status of each wireless communication interface; and

following the registration and configuration, making the registered service active on the node by enabling access to the registered service by one or both of end-user devices and other nodes of the plurality of nodes.

22. The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 21 , wherein configuring the one or more wireless communication interfaces comprises:

allocating wireless capacity of the configured wireless communication interfaces, to the registered service.

23. The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 21 , wherein the steps of the method further comprise:

receiving context information shared by one or more neighbor nodes of the node, wherein the context information is representative of one or both of operating conditions of the one or more neighbor nodes and quality of service of wireless communication by the one or more neighbor nodes; and

adjusting a configuration of one or more wireless communication interfaces of the plurality of wireless communication interfaces and adjusting allocation of wireless capacity of the one or more wireless communication interfaces, based upon the received context information, the respective service profile, and the respective priority of service of each service on the node.

24. The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 21 , wherein the steps of the method further comprise:

detecting, at the node, an occurrence of a trigger event within a geographic region served by the network;

changing an operating state of one or more services on the node, based on the detected trigger event; and

adjusting a configuration of one or more wireless communication interfaces of the plurality of wireless communication interfaces and adjusting allocation of wireless capacity of the one or more wireless communication interfaces, based upon the detected trigger event, the respective service profile, and the respective priority of service of each service on the node.

25. The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 24 , wherein the trigger event comprises detection of an approaching police, medical, or fire service vehicle.

26. The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 21 , wherein the plurality of wireless communication interfaces comprises:

at least one wireless communication interface that enables direct communication between the node and one or more other nodes of the network; and

at least one wireless communication interface configurable to directly communicate with a handheld end-user device and a WLAN access point, using a wireless local area network (WLAN) standard.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 21 , wherein the operating status of each wireless communication interface comprises one or both of an indication of availability for use of the wireless communication interface and an indication of strength of a radio frequency signal received by the wireless communication interface.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 21 , wherein the operating status of each wireless communication interface comprises one or both of an indication of quality of service provided by the wireless communication interface and an indication of unused data communication capacity of the wireless communication interface.

29. The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 21 , wherein the node is located on an autonomous vehicle and comprises a communication interface configured to directly communicatively couple with a system that controls movement of the autonomous vehicle.

30. The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 21 , wherein the plurality of software applications comprises a software application that provides Internet access to one or more wireless-enabled end-user devices via a wireless communication interface of the plurality of wireless communication interfaces of the node.
