Abstract

A device implementing a dynamic local media access control (MAC) address assignment system may include at least one processor that is configured to initiate a link establishment with a network device. The at least one processor may be further configured to determine whether a previously assigned media access control (MAC) address is stored locally. The at least one processor may be further configured to transmit a message to the network device requesting validation of the previously assigned MAC address when stored locally. The at least one processor may be further configured to communicate using the previously assigned MAC address when the validation is received from the network device, otherwise communicating using a dynamically assigned MAC address received from the network device during the link establishment.

Claims (46)

1. A device comprising: at least one processor configured to:

initiate a link establishment with a network device;

determine whether a previously assigned media access control (MAC) address is stored locally;

transmit a message to the network device requesting validation of the previously assigned MAC address when stored locally; and

communicate using the previously assigned MAC address when the validation is received from the network device, otherwise:

transmit a request for a range of MAC addresses that includes a dynamically assigned MAC address;

receive, from the network device, the range of MAC addresses;

distribute the range of MAC addresses, exclusive of the dynamically assigned MAC address, to additional devices; and

communicate using the dynamically assigned MAC address received from the network device.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the link establishment comprises autonegotiation.

3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the dynamically assigned MAC address is received from the network device via an autonegotiation page during the link establishment.

4. The device of claim 3 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to:

transmit a request for the dynamically assigned MAC address via another autonegotiation page.

5. The device of claim 4 , wherein the autonegotiation page and the another autonegotiation page each comprises at least one of a base page or a next page.

The device of claim 1 , wherein the dynamically assigned MAC address is generated from a 24-bit random value and a pre-configured 24-bit value, wherein the 24-bit random value comprises least significant bits of the dynamically assigned MAC address and the pre-configured 24-bit value comprises most significant bits of the dynamically assigned MAC address.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the dynamically assigned MAC address is unique to a local area network that the device is associated with.

8. A method comprising:

initiating a link establishment with a network device;

determining whether a previously assigned media access control (MAC) address is stored locally;

transmitting a message to the network device requesting validation of the previously assigned MAC address when stored locally; and

communicating using the previously assigned MAC address when the validation is received from the network device, otherwise:

transmitting a request for a range of MAC addresses that includes a dynamically assigned MAC address;

receiving, from the network device, the range of MAC addresses;

distributing the range of MAC addresses, exclusive of the dynamically assigned MAC address, to additional devices; and

communicating using the dynamically assigned MAC address received from the network device.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the MAC address is received from the network device in an autonegotiation page.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

transmitting a request for the dynamically assigned MAC address via another autonegotiation page.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the autonegotiation page and the another autonegotiation page each comprises at least one of a base page or a next page.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the link establishment comprises autonegotiation.

The method of claim 8 , wherein the dynamically assigned MAC address is generated from a 24-bit random value and a pre-configured 24-bit value, wherein the 24-bit random value comprises least significant bits of the dynamically assigned MAC address and the pre-configured 24-bit value comprises most significant bits of the dynamically assigned MAC address.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein the dynamically assigned MAC address comprises a locally unique MAC address.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising code that, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform operations, and the code comprising:

code to initiate a link establishment with a network device;

code to determine whether a previously assigned media access control (MAC) address is stored locally;

code to transmit a message to the network device requesting validation of the previously assigned MAC address when stored locally; and

code to communicate using the previously assigned MAC address when the validation is received from the network device,

otherwise to transmit a request for a range of MAC addresses that includes a dynamically assigned MAC address;

receive, from the network device, the range of MAC addresses;

distribute the range of MAC addresses, exclusive of the dynamically assigned MAC address, to additional devices; and

communicate using the dynamically assigned MAC address received from the network device.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the dynamically assigned MAC address is received from the network device during the link establishment in response to a request for the dynamically assigned MAC address transmitted to the network device via an autonegotiation page.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the link establishment comprises autonegotiation and the MAC address is received from the network device in another autonegotiation page.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the autonegotiation page and the another autonegotiation page each comprises at least one of a base page or a next page.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the dynamically assigned MAC address is generated from a 24-bit random value and a pre-configured 24-bit value, wherein the 24-bit random value comprises least significant bits of the dynamically assigned MAC address and the pre-configured 24-bit value comprises most significant bits of the dynamically assigned MAC address.

20. The device of claim 2 , wherein the autonegotiation of the link establishment occurs at a physical layer of the device.
