a crankcase cover having a front portion and a rear portion, wherein the front portion of the crankcase cover and the cylinder head are located forward of a vertical plane that includes the crankshaft axis, and wherein the crankcase cover includes a sump formed in the crankcase cover, where the sump defines a crankcase chamber;

a supply pump in fluid communication with the oil passageway;

a return pump; and

a return pump inlet, wherein the return pump inlet is the entry point from the sump formed in the crankcase cover at which oil is drawn from the sump to the return pump, and wherein the return pump inlet is located in the front portion of the crankcase cover and the return pump inlet is located closer to the camshaft than to the crankshaft; and

an external oil reservoir, comprising:

an oil tank defining an oil chamber; and

an oil filter assembly comprising:

a housing at least partially defining a filter chamber, wherein the filter chamber is in fluid communication with the oil chamber; and

a removable filter positioned within the filter chamber;

wherein the supply pump is also in fluid communication with the oil chamber and is configured to draw oil from the oil chamber and provide oil to the oil passageway; and

wherein the return pump is also in fluid communication with the filter chamber and is configured to draw oil from the crankcase chamber and provide oil to the filter chamber.

2. The engine assembly of claim 1 , wherein the return pump is configured to pressurize oil to a first pressure and the supply pump is configured to pressurize oil to a second pressure greater than the first pressure.

3. The engine assembly of claim 2 , wherein the return pump is fluidly coupled to the filter chamber by a low pressure conduit.

4. The engine assembly of claim 1 , wherein the crankcase chamber, and the oil chamber have an overall oil capacity that provides at least five hundred hours of engine oil life.

5. The engine assembly of claim 1 , wherein the crankcase chamber has a crankcase volume and the oil chamber has a reservoir volume greater than the crankcase volume.

6. The engine assembly of claim 5 , wherein the reservoir volume is at least five quarts.

7. The engine assembly of claim 5 , wherein the reservoir volume is greater than five quarts and a recommended oil fill capacity of the oil chamber is five quarts.

8. The engine assembly of claim 1 , further comprising:

a return pump housing formed in the exterior of the crankcase cover, wherein the return pump is positioned within the return pump housing; and

a cover plate secured to the crankcase cover to close the return pump housing.

9. The engine assembly of claim 1 , wherein the crankshaft includes a counterweight positioned in the crankcase chamber; and

wherein a recommended oil level of the crankcase chamber during normal operation of the engine is below a lowermost portion of the counterweight.

10. The engine assembly of claim 1 , wherein the removable filter includes a filter outlet and a recommended fill level of the oil chamber of the oil tank is located below the filter outlet.

11. An engine assembly, comprising:

an air-cooled engine, comprising:

a vertically-oriented crankshaft configured to rotate about a crankshaft axis;

an engine block including a cylinder;

a cylinder head coupled to the cylinder;

an oil passageway configured to distribute oil;

a crankcase cover having a front portion and a rear portion, wherein the front portion of the crankcase cover and the cylinder head are located forward of a first vertical plane that includes the crankshaft axis, and wherein the crankcase cover includes a sump formed in the crankcase cover, where the sump defines a crankcase chamber;

a supply pump in fluid communication with the oil passageway; and

a return pump including a return pump inlet, wherein the return pump inlet is the entry point from the sump formed in the crankcase cover at which oil is drawn from the sump to the return pump, wherein the return pump inlet is located in the front portion of the crankcase cover, and the return pump inlet is located closer to the camshaft than to the crankshaft, and wherein the first vertical plane is perpendicular to a second vertical plane including the crankshaft axis and an axis of rotation of the return pump;

an external oil reservoir, comprising:

an oil tank defining an oil chamber;

wherein the crankcase chamber and the oil chamber are sized to provide at least five hundred hours of engine oil life.

12. The engine assembly of claim 11 , wherein the crankcase chamber has a crankcase volume and the oil chamber has a reservoir volume greater than the crankcase volume.

13. The engine assembly of claim 12 , wherein the reservoir volume is at least five quarts.
