Abstract

A security system control panel or home automation control panel including an end-user replaceable cellular telephony module that is removable from the control panel without disassembling the control panel. The cellular module includes a body, a cellular telephony circuit coupled to the body, a cellular telephony antenna coupled to the body and the cellular telephony circuit, and a first connector coupled to the cellular telephony circuit and the body, wherein the first connector is sized and shaped or otherwise configured to be removably engaged by the end-user with a second connector in the control panel.

Claims (49)

1 . A security system comprising:

a housing holding a control panel;

a processor disposed within the housing and configured to execute instructions for controlling a security or home automation system including the control panel;

a Bluetooth circuit configured to receive at least one Bluetooth signal from one or more Bluetooth-enabled devices, wherein the processor is operably coupled to the Bluetooth circuit and is configured to:

store data identifying an authorized Bluetooth-enabled device in a memory;

detect the authorized Bluetooth-enabled device; and

disarm a security system of the control panel in response to the detection.

2 . The security system of claim 1 , further comprising a key fob, wherein the systems is configured to enable a user to remotely arm and disarm the security system using the key fob.

3 . The security system of claim 1 , further comprising a remote keypad located remote from the control panel and configured to enable a user to remotely arm and disarm the security system and to view a status of the security system without need to use the control panel.

4 . The security system of claim 1 , wherein the control panel is configured to transmit status signals to a smartphone to indicate whether the system is armed versus disarmed.

5 . The security system of claim 1 , wherein the security system is configured to receive, from a smartphone, control signals that control a plurality of aspects of the security system.

6 . The security system of claim 1 , further comprising a touchscreen user interface in the housing, wherein the touchscreen user interface receives input to arm and disarm the the security system.

7 . The security system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a remote keypad located remote from the control panel and configured to enable a user to remotely arm and disarm the security system and to view a status of the security system without need to use the control panel;

a touchscreen user interface in the housing, wherein the touchscreen user interface receives input to arm and disarm the the security system;

wherein the control panel is configured to transmit status signals to a smartphone to indicate whether the system is armed versus disarmed; and

wherein the security system is configured to receive, from the smartphone, control signals that control a plurality of aspects of the security system.

8 . A method comprising:

providing a security system that includes a control panel in a housing;

disposing a processor within the housing and configuring the processor to execute instructions for controlling a security or home automation system that includes the control panel, wherein the processor includes a memory and a Bluetooth circuit configured to receive at least one Bluetooth signal from one or more Bluetooth-enabled devices;

storing data identifying an authorized Bluetooth-enabled device in the memory;

detecting the authorized Bluetooth-enabled device; and

disarming a security system of the control panel in response to the detecting.

9 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising receiving commands from a remote key fob, and based on the received commands from the key fob, selectively arming and disarming the security system.

10 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising receiving commands from a device having a keypad located remote from the control panel and transmitting a status of the security system to the keypad device to enable a user to remotely arm and disarm the security system and to view the status without need to use the control panel.

11 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising transmitting status signals from the control panel to a smartphone to indicate whether the system is armed versus disarmed.

12 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising receiving, into the security system from a smartphone, control signals that control a plurality of aspects of the security system.

13 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising providing a touchscreen user interface in the housing, and receiving user input, via the touchscreen user interface, to arm and disarm the the security system.

14 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

enabling a remote keypad located remote from the control panel in order for a user to remotely arm and disarm the security system and to view a status of the security system without need to use the control panel;

receiving input from a user via a touchscreen user interface to arm and disarm the the security system;

transmitting status signals to a smartphone to indicate whether the system is armed versus disarmed; and

receiving, from the smartphone, control signals that control a plurality of aspects of the security system.

15 . A security system comprising:

a control panel in a housing;

a processor disposed within the housing and configured to execute instructions for controlling a security or home automation system that includes the control panel, wherein the processor includes a memory and a Bluetooth circuit configured to receive at least one Bluetooth signal from one or more Bluetooth-enabled devices;

means for storing data identifying an authorized Bluetooth-enabled device in the memory;

means for detecting the authorized Bluetooth-enabled device; and

means for disarming a security system of the control panel in response to the detecting.

16 . The security system of claim 15 , further comprising means for receiving commands from a remote key fob, and based on the received commands from the key fob, selectively arming and disarming the security system.

17 . The security system of claim 15 , further comprising means for receiving commands from a device having a keypad located remote from the control panel and means for transmitting a status of the security system to the keypad device to enable a user to remotely arm and disarm the security system and to view the status without need to use the control panel.

18 . The security system of claim 15 , further comprising means for transmitting status signals from the control panel to a smartphone to indicate whether the system is armed versus disarmed.

19 . The security system of claim 15 , further comprising means for receiving, into the security system from a smartphone, control signals that control a plurality of aspects of the security system.

20 . The security system of claim 15 , further comprising a touchscreen user interface in the housing, and means for receiving user input, via the touchscreen user interface, to arm and disarm the the security system.

21 . The security system of claim 15 , further comprising:

a remote keypad located remote from the control panel and enabled for a user to remotely arm and disarm the security system and to view a status of the security system without need to use the control panel;

a touchscreen user interface in the housing, and means for receiving input from a user via the touchscreen user interface to arm and disarm the the security system;

means for transmitting status signals to a smartphone to indicate whether the system is armed versus disarmed; and

means for receiving, from the smartphone, control signals that control a plurality of aspects of the security system.
