Abstract

Described herein are novel aluminum containing alloys. The alloys are highly formable and can be used for producing highly shaped aluminum products, including bottles and cans.

Claims (18)

1. A method of producing a metal sheet, comprising:

direct chill casting an aluminum alloy to form an ingot, wherein the aluminum alloy comprises 0.25-0.35 wt. % Si, 0.40-0.60 wt. % Fe, 0-0.40 wt. % Cu, 1.10-1.50 wt. % Mn, 0-0.76 wt. % Mg, 0.001-0.05 wt. % Cr, 0-0.3 wt. % Zn, up to 0.15 wt. % of impurities, and Al;

homogenizing the ingot in a two-stage homogenizing cycle to form an ingot containing a plurality of Mn-containing dispersoids, the two-stage homogenizing cycle comprising:

heating the ingot to a peak metal temperature of at least 625° C.;

allowing the ingot to stand at the peak metal temperature for four or more hours;

cooling the ingot to a temperature of 550° C. or lower; and

allowing the ingot to stand for up to 20 hours;

hot rolling the ingot containing the plurality of Mn-containing dispersoids to produce a metal sheet; and

cold rolling the metal sheet.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of Mn-containing dispersoids comprises Mn-containing dispersoids each having a diameter of 1 μm or less.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the aluminum alloy comprises 0.25-0.35 wt. % Si, 0.40-0.50 wt. % Fe, 0.08-0.22 wt. % Cu, 1.10-1.30 wt. % Mn, 0-0.5 wt. % Mg, 0.001-0.03 wt. % Cr, 0.07-0.13 wt. % Zn, up to 0.15 wt. % of impurities, and Al.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the aluminum alloy comprises 0.25-0.30 wt. % Si, 0.40-0.45 wt. % Fe, 0.10-0.20 wt. % Cu, 1.15-1.25 wt. % Mn, 0-0.25 wt. % Mg, 0.003-0.02 wt. % Cr, 0.07-0.10 wt. % Zn, up to 0.15 wt. % of impurities, and Al.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the aluminum alloy comprises Mg in an amount of 0.10 wt. % or less.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the aluminum alloy comprises Cr in an amount of 0.001-0.03 wt. %.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising batch annealing the metal sheet after hot rolling at an annealing temperature from 350° C. to 450° C. for a period of time.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the period of time is up to 1 hour.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein an exit temperature from hot rolling is at least 300° C.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising coiling the metal sheet at the exit temperature to self-anneal the metal sheet.
