Abstract

A system and method for determining the presence of an individual at a particular spot within a location preferably based on the strength of signals received from beacons assigned to the particular spot by a software application (“App”) running on an electronic device of the individual. In one embodiment, certain presence calculations are performed by the App. In another embodiment, the App forwards information regarding the received beacon signals to an electronic identification and location tracking system and the presence calculations are performed by the system.

a. electronically receiving one or more signals containing identification information from at least one wireless beacon associated with a particular area within a location by a user's portable electronic device running an electronic location identification and tracking system application (“App”);

b. electronically determining by the App whether each beacon signal received is from a beacon having an identifier that is previously programmed into the App and for each beacon determined to have a previously programmed identifier electronically considering the received signal from the beacon as a known beacon signal;

c. for each known beacon signal received by the App electronically determining a location cluster that the beacon is assigned to;

d. electronically determining if a preconfigured minimum number signals for beacons assigned to the location cluster have been received; and

e. where the minimum number of signals has been received as determined in step (d), calculating the average signal strength from the beacon signals received from the beacons associated the location cluster.

2. The method for determining a presence of a user of claim 1 further comprising the step of calculating an average signal strength for each location cluster for the particular area that the App received at least a minimum number of known beacon signals.

3. The method for determining a presence of a user of claim 1 wherein if a signal was not received from the minimum number of beacons associated with a particular cluster of beacons in step (d) further comprising the step of:

(i) using a static value for the missing beacon(s) when calculating an average signal strength in step (e) for the beacon signals of the beacons associated with the particular cluster of beacons, or

(ii) discarding each beacon in the beacon cluster below the minimum number of beacons for the cluster, or

(iii) automatically considering that the individual is not present at the specific location assigned to the beacon cluster.

4. The method for determining a presence of a user of claim 2 wherein after the average signal strength for each detected clusters of beacons for the particular area has been determined or calculated further comprising the steps of:

selecting or identifying the beacon cluster with the highest computed average signal strength; and

determining that the user is located at the cluster with the highest computed average strength.

5. The method for determining a presence of a user of claim 4 further comprising the step of electronically comparing the average signal strength of the selected beacon cluster to a preconfigured minimum signal strength value for the particular area or particular cluster of beacons.

6. The method for determining a presence of a user of claim 5 wherein if the average signal strength for the selected cluster is above the preconfigured minimum signal strength value electronically determining that the user is present at the particular area within the location associated with the selected cluster of beacons.

7. The method for determining a presence of a user of claim 5 wherein where the average signal strength for the selected cluster is above the preconfigured minimum signal strength value further comprising the step of electronically determining if the average signal strength remains above the preconfigured minimum signal strength value for a preconfigured period of time.

8. The method for determining a presence of a user of claim 2 further comprising the steps of:

selecting the beacon cluster with the highest computed average signal strength; and

electronically forwarding the identifiers and computed average signal strength for the selected cluster to an electronic location identification and tracking system (“System”) to determine the current location of the individual at the particular geographical area.

9. The method for determining a presence of a user of claim 8 further comprising the step of electronically comparing the selected beacon cluster identifiers and computer average signal strength to a preconfigured minimum signal strength value for the particular area or particular cluster of beacons by the electronic location identification and tracking system (“System”).

10. The method for determining a presence of a user of claim 8 wherein if the average signal strength for the selected cluster is above the preconfigured minimum signal strength value electronically determining that the user is considered present at the particular area within the location associated with the selected cluster of beacons.

11. The method for determining a presence of a user of claim 8 wherein where the average signal strength for the selected cluster is above the preconfigured minimum signal strength value further comprising the step of electronically determining if the average signal strength remains above the preconfigured minimum signal strength value for a preconfigured period of time.

12. A method for determining a presence of a user at a particular area within a location by an electronic location identification and tracking computer system, said method comprising the steps of:

a. electronically receiving one or more signals containing identification information from at least one wireless beacon associated with a particular area within a location by a user's portable electronic device running an electronic location identification and tracking system application (“App”);

b. electronically determining by the App whether each beacon signal received is from a beacon whose identifier is previously programmed into the App and for each beacon determined to have a previously programmed identifier electronically considering the received signal from the beacon as a known beacon signal;

c. for each known beacon signal received by the App electronically determining a location cluster that the beacon is assigned to;

d. for each known beacon signal received by the App, electronically determining if the minimum number of beacons for the associated location cluster have been received;

e. for each known beacon signal, calculating the average signal strength from the beacon signals received from the beacons associated with all identified clusters of beacons; and

f. wherein if a signal was not received from the minimum number of beacons associated with any given cluster of beacons; further comprising the step of discarding the cluster from consideration of the particular area determination for the user within the location.

13. The method for determining a presence of a user of claim 12 wherein the average signal strength for each detected clusters of beacons in step (d) further comprising the steps of:

selecting the beacon cluster with the highest computed average signal strength;

querying the App database for the identity of the particular area within the location associated with the selected beacon cluster; and

determining that a current location for the user within the location is at the particular area.

14. The method for determining a presence of a user of claim 13 further comprising the step of electronically comparing an average signal strength for the selected beacon cluster to a preconfigured minimum signal strength value for the particular area or particular cluster of beacons.
