GOLF CLUB HEADS AND METHODS TO MANUFACTURE GOLF CLUB HEADS
Embodiments of golf club heads and methods to manufacture golf club heads are generally described herein. In one example, a golf club head may include a body portion comprising a first material. The body portion may have a toe portion, a heel portion, a top portion, a sole portion, a back portion, a front portion having a face portion. The golf club head may include an interior cavity partially, substantially, or entirely filled with a cavity filling material associated with a coefficient of restitution greater than or equal to 0.7 when an initial velocity is greater than or equal to 100 feet per second. Further, the golf club head may include a mass portion comprising a second material, which may be different than the first material. Other examples and embodiments may be described and claimed.
1 . A golf club head comprising:
a polymer material associated with a coefficient of restitution (COR) greater than or equal to 0.75 and a Shore D hardness of at least 25;
a body portion comprising a first material, the body portion comprising a toe portion, a heel portion, a top portion, a sole portion, a front portion, a back portion, an opening, and an interior cavity partially or entirely filled with the polymer material through the opening, the first material having a density between 7.0 grams per cubic centimeter and 8.3 grams per cubic centimeter; and
a mass portion comprising a second material different from the first material, the mass portion located farther from the heel portion than the toe portion, and the mass portion located at a different location than the opening.
2 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first material comprises a stainless steel material comprising one or more of:
a tensile strength between 600 million Newtons per square meter (600 Megapascals) and 800 million Newtons per square meter (800 Megapascals);
a yield strength between 500 million Newtons per square meter (500 Megapascals) and 700 million Newtons per square meter (700 Megapascals);
a hardness of between 10 Rockwell Hardness in the C scale (HRC) and 40 HRC; or
an elongation of between 5% and 40%.
3 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 wherein the polymer material comprises a thermoset material.
4 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the polymer material comprises a thermoset material having a Shore D hardness of greater than or equal to 40 and less than or equal to 80.
5 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the polymer material comprises a thermoset material having a density of greater than or equal to 1.0 g/cm 3 and less than or equal to 2.0 g/cm 3 .
6 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the polymer material comprises a thermoset material associated with a COR greater than or equal to 0.8.
7 . A golf club head comprising:
a body portion comprising a material associated with a first density, the body portion having a toe portion, a heel portion, a top portion, a sole portion, a front portion, and a back portion;
a thermoset material having a coefficient of restitution (COR) greater than or equal to 0.75;
an interior cavity at least 50% filled with the thermoset material;
an opening connected to the interior cavity; and
a mass portion comprising a material associated with a second density different than the first density, the mass portion located at or below a horizontal midplane of the body portion and located farther from the heel portion than the toe portion, and the mass portion located at a different location than the opening.
8 . A golf club head as defined in claim 7 , wherein the thermoset material comprises a thermoset material having a COR greater than or equal to 0.8.
9 . A golf club head as defined in claim 7 further comprising a face portion coupled to the body portion, the face portion having a face portion thickness, and wherein a ratio of a width of the thermoset material and a face portion thickness of the golf club head is greater than or equal to 0.2 and less than or equal to 5.0.
10 . A golf club head as defined in claim 7 , wherein the thermoset material comprises a thermoset material having a Shore D hardness of greater than or equal to 25 and less than or equal to 65.
11 . A golf club head as defined in claim 7 , wherein the thermoset material comprises a thermoset material having a density of greater than or equal to 1.0 g/cm 3 and less than or equal to 2.0 g/cm 3 .
12 . A golf club head as defined in claim 7 , wherein the interior cavity is filled with the thermoset material below the horizontal midplane of the golf club head.
13 . A golf club head comprising:
a cavity filling material associated with a coefficient of restitution (COR) greater than or equal to 0.8;
a body portion having a toe portion, a heel portion, a top portion, a sole portion, a front portion, a back portion, and an interior cavity at least partially filled with the cavity filling material;
a port located at or proximate to the toe portion, the port being configured to receive the cavity filling material;
a face portion having a thickness of less than or equal to about 1.9 millimeters (0.075 inch); and
a mass portion located at a different location than the port.
14 . A golf club head as defined in claim 13 , wherein the mass portion is partially or entirely located above a horizontal midplane.
15 . A golf club head as defined in claim 13 , wherein the mass portion is partially or entirely located below the horizontal midplane.
16 . A golf club head as defined in claim 13 , wherein the cavity filling material is configured to bond to the face portion.
17 . A golf club head as defined in claim 13 , wherein the mass portion is located closer to the heel portion than the toe portion.
18 . A golf club head as defined in claim 13 further comprising a hosel portion, wherein the mass portion is located at or proximate to the hosel portion.
19 . A golf club head as defined in claim 13 , wherein the interior cavity comprises a first width above a horizontal midplane of the golf club head, a second width below the horizontal midplane, and a third width between the first width and the second width, wherein the third width is greater than the first width and greater than the second width.
20 . A golf club head as defined in claim 13 , wherein the interior cavity comprises a first width above a horizontal midplane of the golf club head, a second width below the horizontal midplane, and a third width between the first width and the second width, wherein the third width is greater than the first width and greater than the second width, and wherein the third width is below the horizontal midplane and above the mass portion.
