Abstract

An adaptive virtual desktop architecture is provided. Application install or assignment is evaluated, such as by using heuristics to identify applications that may present compatibility problems. Upon determining that a newly installed application may have compatibility problems when associated with a non-persistent virtual desktop, a promotion to a persistent virtual desktop occurs.

Claims (31)

1. A method comprising:

monitoring installation or assignment of an application to a user account associated with a non-persistent virtual desktop;

evaluating attributes of the application to determine compatibility of the application with the non-persistent virtual desktop; and

upon determining that the application is not compatible with the non-persistent virtual desktop based on the evaluation, transitioning the user account from the non-persistent virtual desktop to a persistent virtual desktop upon the non-persistent virtual desktop being logged off or idle.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the non-persistent virtual desktop is a just-in-time (JIT) virtual desktop.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the non-persistent virtual desktop is associated with a JIT virtual machine (VM).

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the JIT VM is provisioned by attaching shared copy-on-write (COW) pages to the JIT VM upon provisioning.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the user account of the persistent virtual desktop is permanently associated with a particular VM.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein permanently associating the user account with the particular VM includes enabling services and drivers to start early in the boot up process.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein transitioning the user account includes associating a user writable volume and associated application stacks of a user with a particular VM.

8. A computing system comprising:

a memory storing a plurality of user accounts;

an agent executing computer-executable instructions to:

monitor installation or assignment of an application to one of the plurality of user accounts associated with a non-persistent virtual desktop;

evaluate attributes of the application to determine compatibility of the application with the non-persistent virtual desktop; and

upon determining that the application is not compatible with the non-persistent virtual desktop based on the evaluation, transition the user account from the non-persistent virtual desktop to a persistent virtual desktop upon the non-persistent virtual desktop being logged off or idle.

9. The computing system of claim 8 , wherein the non-persistent virtual desktop is a just-in-time (JIT) virtual desktop.

10. The computing system of claim 8 , wherein the non-persistent virtual desktop is associated with a JIT virtual machine (VM).

11. The computing system of claim 10 , wherein the JIT VM is provisioned by attaching shared copy-on-write (COW) pages to the JIT VM upon provisioning.

12. The computing system of claim 8 , wherein the user account of the persistent virtual desktop is permanently associated with a particular VM.

13. The computing system of claim 12 , wherein permanently associating the user account with the particular VM includes enabling services and drivers to start early in the boot up process.

14. The computing system of claim 8 , wherein transitioning the user account includes associating a user writable volume and associated application stacks of a user with a particular VM.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable medium including instructions that, when executed by a virtual desktop broker, perform operations including:

monitoring installation or assignment of an application to a user account associated with a non-persistent virtual desktop;

evaluating attributes of the application to determine compatibility of the application with the non-persistent virtual desktop; and

upon determining that the application is not compatible with the non-persistent virtual desktop based on the evaluation, transitioning the user account from the non-persistent virtual desktop to a persistent virtual desktop upon the non-persistent virtual desktop being logged off or idle.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the non-persistent virtual desktop is a just-in-time (JIT) virtual desktop.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the non-persistent virtual desktop is associated with a JIT virtual machine (VM).

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the JIT VM is provisioned by attaching shared copy-on-write (COW) pages to the JIT VM upon provisioning.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the user account of the persistent virtual desktop is permanently associated with a particular VM.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 19 , wherein permanently associating the user account with the particular VM includes enabling services and drivers to start early in the boot up process.
