Abstract

An apparatus, and an associated method, for facilitating communication operations with a wireless device that is ICS or DTM capable. Signaling protocols and apparatus are provided for operation of the wireless device when an ICS with the wireless device is ongoing, and the device leaves an area that provides for ICS as well as when the ICS can be provided using circuit-switched connections.

Claims (30)

1. A method of a user equipment (UE), comprising:

receiving, at the UE from a wireless network and responsive to a cell change, an indication that a first feature is supported, wherein the indication identifies communication capabilities of the wireless network;

comparing, at the UE, the indication against a stored policy to determine if a second feature is supported by the wireless network; and

sending, from the UE over the wireless network, a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) REGISTER message containing a feature tag based on the comparing, the feature tag specifying whether the second feature is supported by the wireless network, wherein the wireless network comprises a Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) access network, and the feature tag contained in the SIP REGISTER message specifies whether the second feature is supported by the 3GPP access network.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the indication is responsive to polling performed by the UE.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the indication is responsive to a radio access technology (RAT) change.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determine whether the second feature is supported based on a radio access technology (RAT) indicated by the indication.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the 3GPP access network comprises a Long Term Evolution (LTE) access network.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the stored policy correlates a plurality of first features to a plurality of second features, and wherein the comparing determines whether the first feature indicated by the indication is one of the plurality of first features.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the indication comprises an identifier that identifies a radio access technology (RAT) type.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein sending the SIP REGISTER message comprises sending the SIP REGISTER message to activate or deactivate a service.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the indication identifies whether the UE is dual transfer mode (DTM) capable.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the feature tag in the SIP REGISTER message specifies to a home network of the UE whether the second feature is supported by the 3GPP access network that is different from the home network.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the feature tag contained in the SIP REGISTER message specifies whether a dual transfer mode (DTM) is supported by the 3GPP access network.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the DTM comprises an ability to support both circuit switched and packet switched communications.

13. A user equipment (UE) comprising:

a memory to store a policy; and

a processor configured to:

receive, at the UE from a wireless network and responsive to a cell change, an indication that a first feature is supported, wherein the indication identifies communication capabilities of the wireless network;

compare, at the UE, the indication against a stored policy to determine if a second feature is supported by the wireless network; and

send, from the UE over the wireless network, a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) REGISTER message containing a feature tag based on the comparing, the feature tag specifying whether the second feature is supported by the wireless network, wherein the wireless network comprises a Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) access network, and the feature tag contained in the SIP REGISTER message specifies whether the second feature is supported by the 3GPP access network.

14. The UE of claim 13 , wherein the indication is responsive to a radio access technology (RAT) change.

15. The UE of claim 13 , wherein the processor is configured to further:

determine whether the second feature is supported based on a radio access technology (RAT) indicated by the indication.

16. The UE of claim 13 , wherein the policy correlates a plurality of first features to a plurality of second features, and wherein the comparing determines whether the first feature indicated by the indication is one of the plurality of first features.

17. The UE of claim 16 , wherein the plurality of first features comprise a plurality of radio access technology (RAT) types.

18. The UE of claim 13 , wherein the feature tag in the SIP REGISTER message specifies to a home network of the UE that the second feature is not supported by the 3GPP access network that is different from the home network.

19. The UE of claim 13 , wherein the 3GPP access network comprises a Long Term Evolution (LTE) access network.

20. The UE of claim 13 , wherein the feature tag contained in the SIP REGISTER message specifies whether a dual transfer mode (DTM) is supported by the 3GPP access network.
