Abstract

A control method and apparatus for startup of turbocompressors to avoid overpowering a driver of the turbocompressor. In a first embodiment, the control system monitors input signals from transmitters of various control inputs. When the input signals exceed threshold values, the control system begins to close the antisurge valve. In a second embodiment, the antisurge valve begins to close after a predetermined time measured from the time startup is initiated. In both embodiments, the antisurge valve continues to ramp closed until the compressor has reached its operating zone, or until the compressor's operating point reaches a surge control line, at which point the antisurge valve is manipulated to keep the compressor from surging.

Claims (64)

1. A method of starting a turbocompressor having an antisurge valve and a control system, the method comprising:

opening the antisurge valve to a full open position;

initiating a startup of the turbocompressor;

starting a timer at the time of the startup of the turbocompressor

increasing a rotational speed of the turbocompressor from a zero rotational speed;

measuring time elapsed from the startup of the turbocompressor;

comparing the measured time with a threshold value; and

actuating the antisurge valve toward a closed position in response to determining that the measured time is greater than or equal to the threshold value.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the threshold value is less than one minute.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the actuating comprises actuating the antisurge valve toward the closed position before the turbocompressor reaches a minimum operating rotational speed, wherein the minimum operating rotational speed comprises a constant operating rotational speed, the method further comprising:

permitting a driver of the turbocompressor to reach the constant operating rotational speed; and

operating the turbocompressor at the constant operating rotational speed.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

continuing to increase the rotational speed of the turbocompressor in response to determining that the measured time is less than the threshold value.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein actuating the antisurge valve towards the closed position further comprises:

detecting the turbocompressor's operating point, and

comparing the turbocompressor's operating point to a value representing a surge control line.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

manipulating the antisurge valve, based on the comparing the turbocompressor's operating point to a value representing the surge control line, to keep the turbocompressor's operating point from corresponding to a surge condition.

7. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

ramping the antisurge valve to the closed position, based on the comparing the turbocompressor's operating point to a value representing the surge control line and in response to determining that the turbocompressor's operating point does not correspond to a surge condition.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining whether a minimum operating speed of the turbocompressor has been reached, in response to determining that the measured time is greater than or equal to the threshold value.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising;

operating the turbocompressor in a run mode in response to determining that the minimum operating speed has been reached.

10. The method of claim 8 , further comprising;

increasing the rotational speed of the turbocompressor in response to determining that the minimum operating speed has not been reached.

11. An apparatus, comprising:

an antisurge valve;

a timer configured to measure an elapsed time from a startup of a turbocompressor; and

a control system configured to:

open the antisurge valve to a full open position,

initiate the startup of the turbocompressor,

increase a rotational speed of the turbocompressor from a zero rotational speed,

determine whether the measured time from the startup of the turbocompressor is greater than or equal to a threshold value, and

actuate the antisurge valve towards a closed position in response to determining that the measured time is greater than or equal to the threshold value.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the control system is further configured to:

continuing to increase the rotational speed of the turbocompressor in response to determining that the measured time is less than the threshold value.

13. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein when actuating the antisurge valve towards the closed position, the control system is further configured to:

detect the turbocompressor's operating point, and

compare the turbocompressor's operating point to a value representing a surge control line.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the control system is further configured to:

manipulate the antisurge valve, based on the comparing the turbocompressor's operating point to a value representing the surge control line, to keep the turbocompressor's operating point from corresponding to a surge condition.

15. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the control system is further configured to:

ramp the antisurge valve to the closed position, based on the comparing the turbocompressor's operating point to a value representing the surge control line and in response to determining that the turbocompressor's operating point does not correspond to a surge condition.

16. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the control system is further configured to:

determine whether a minimum operating speed of the turbocompressor has been reached, in response to determining that the measured time is greater than or equal to the threshold value.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the control system is further configured to:

operate the turbocompressor in a run mode in response to determining that the minimum operating speed has been reached.

18. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the control system is further configured to:

increase the rotational speed of the turbocompressor in response to determining that the minimum operating speed has not been reached.

19. The apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising:

the turbocompressor.

20. A system, comprising:

a turbocompressor;

an antisurge valve; and

a control system configured to:

open the antisurge valve to a full open position,

initiate a startup of the turbocompressor,

increase a rotational speed of the turbocompressor from a zero rotational speed,

determine whether an elapsed time from the startup of the turbocompressor is greater than or equal to a threshold value,

determine whether a first operating speed of the turbocompressor has been reached, in response to determining that the elapsed time from the startup of the turbocompressor is greater than or equal to the threshold value,

operating the turbocompressor at the first operating speed, in response to determining that the first operating speed of the turbocompressor has been reached, and

actuate the antisurge valve toward a closed position in response to determining that the elapsed time is greater than or equal to the threshold value.
