Abstract

A method for removing carbon dioxide directly from ambient air, using a sorbent under ambient conditions, to obtain relatively pure CO 2 . The CO 2 is removed from the sorbent using process heat, preferably in the form of steam, at a temperature in the range of not greater than about 130° C., to capture the relatively pure CO 2 and to regenerate the sorbent for repeated use. Increased efficiency can be achieved by admixing with the ambient air, prior to contacting the sorbent, a minor amount of a preferably pretreated effluent gas containing a higher concentration of carbon dioxide. The captured carbon dioxide can be stored for further use, or sequestered permanently. The above method provides purified carbon dioxide for further use in agriculture and chemical processes, or for permanent sequestration.

Claims (21)

1. A method capable of capturing carbon dioxide from ambient air under ambient conditions, the method comprising the steps of:

providing energy to a primary production process which produces a primary product with co-generated usable process heat, applying the co-generated process heat from said primary process to generate process heat steam superheated at ambient pressure,

alternately repeatedly exposing a sorbent to capturing and stripping/regeneration system stages, the stages comprising:

initially admixing a minor quantity of treated effluent gases with a substantially larger quantity of ambient air flow to form an ambient air-effluent gas mixture containing a minor quantity of the effluent gases;

during the capture stage, exposing said sorbent to a flow of the ambient air-effluent gas mixture, so as to enable said sorbent to capture carbon dioxide from said ambient air and form CO 2 -laden sorbent, and

during the stripping/regeneration phase, in a sealed regeneration chamber containing the CO 2 -laden sorbent, withdrawing air or any other gas entering the sealed regeneration chamber with the CO 2 -laden sorbent to form at least a partial vacuum, passing the process heat steam into the sealed regeneration chamber and exposing said CO 2 -laden sorbent to said process heat steam, so as to cause the stripping of such captured carbon dioxide from the sorbent, resulting in a regenerated sorbent, and forming a carbon dioxide/water exiting mixture.

2. The method of claim 1 for capturing carbon dioxide from ambient air, wherein the ambient air -effluent gas blend contains no more than 25% pre-treated effluent gas, and the method further comprising:

separating water from the carbon dioxide/water exiting mixture to provide a more concentrated carbon dioxide gas and exhausting the CO 2 from the regeneration chamber;

cooling the sorbent structure within the regeneration chamber; and

moving the cooled sorbent structure from the regeneration chamber to a position where it is again contacted with the air-effluent gas blend; and

alternately moving the sorbent structure between the CO 2 -rich gas adsorbing position and the regeneration chamber to cyclically adsorb CO 2 and regenerate the sorbent.

3. The method of claim 2 for capturing carbon dioxide from ambient air, wherein the ambient air-effluent gas blend contains no more than 5% pre-treated effluent gas.

4. The method of claims 2 , further comprising the step of sensing carbon dioxide concentrations entering and exiting the capture position.

5. A method capable of capturing carbon dioxide from ambient air under ambient conditions, the method comprising the steps of:

providing energy to a primary production process which produces a primary product with co-generated usable process heat, applying the co-generated process heat from said primary process to generate process heat steam superheated at ambient pressure,

utilizing a plurality of parallel combined stages, alternately repeatedly exposing a sorbent in each of the parallel combined stages, to parallel capturing and stripping/regeneration system stages, each of the parallel stages comprising:

initially admixing a minor quantity of treated effluent gases with a substantially larger quantity of ambient air flow to form an ambient air-effluent gas mixture containing a minor quantity of the effluent gases;

during each of the parallel capture stages, exposing said sorbent to a flow of the ambient air-effluent gas mixture, so as to enable said sorbent to capture carbon dioxide from said ambient air and form CO 2 -laden sorbent, and

during each of the parallel stripping/regeneration phases, in parallel sealed regeneration chambers containing the CO 2 -laden sorbent, withdrawing air or any other gas entering the sealed regeneration chamber with the CO 2 -laden sorbent to form at least a partial vacuum, passing the process heat steam into the sealed regeneration chamber and exposing said CO 2 -laden sorbent to said process heat steam, so as to cause the stripping of such captured carbon dioxide from the sorbent, resulting in a regenerated sorbent, and forming a carbon dioxide/water exiting mixture from each of the parallel sealed regeneration chambers.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising the step of sensing carbon dioxide concentration within said regeneration chamber.

7. The method of claim 5 for capturing carbon dioxide from ambient air and effluent gas, wherein the sorbent is part of a sorbent structure comprising an amine that binds to CO 2 , carried by a substrate, which can be in the form of solid particles or a monolithic structure.
