Abstract

Integrated systems for providing audio, video, light stimulus and/or measuring brain activity through the use of one or more electrodes, e.g., EEG dermatrodes, are described. A system, e.g., a head mounted VR device, for providing stimulation to a user and detecting user responses to said stimulation includes a head mount, a plurality of light emitting elements, e.g., sets of LEDs, a housing secured to said head mount, and at least one or more electrodes for making contact with skin of a user. In various embodiments, the system further determines a user's mental state and provides audio and/or visual feedback to the user.

Claims (44)

1 . A system for providing stimulation to a user and detecting user responses to said stimulation, the system comprising:

a head mount;

a plurality of light emitting elements;

a housing secured to said head mount; and

at least one or more electrodes for making contact with skin of a user.

2 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first processor, said first processor being configured to control the plurality of light emitting elements to display a sequence of lights during a first period of time.

3 . The system of claim 2 , wherein said lighting elements are mounted in said housing.

4 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

an audio output device secured to the head mount.

5 . The system of claim 4 , further comprising:

a head mounted display device.

6 . The system of claim 5 wherein said lighting elements include a first set of lighting elements arranged around a left eye lens and a second set of lighting elements arranged around a right eye lens.

7 . The system of claim 6 ,

where the left and right eye lenses are positioned over different portions of said display;

wherein said first set of lighting elements includes lighting elements of multiple different colors arranged in a circle around said left eye lens; and

wherein said second set of lighting elements includes lighting elements of multiple different colors arranged in a circle around said right eye lens.

8 . The system of claim 7 , wherein said lighting elements are individual light emitting diodes; and

wherein said multiple different colors include two or more of: red, green, or blue.

9 . The system of claim 5 , wherein said processor is further configured to:

i) control said head mounted display device to display one or more images to a user of the system; and

ii) control the plurality of light emitting elements to emit a sequence of lights intended to induce a desired neurological response.

The system of claim 9 , wherein the electrodes are coupled to the first processor or a second processor, and wherein the processor to which the electrodes are coupled is configured to monitor electrical signals indicative of brain activity and provide the user of the system one of audio or visual feedback indicative of a detected neurological state.

11 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the system is a standalone system which can be worn on the head of a user.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein said system includes memory for storing videos, light control information or detected response to stimulus provided to a user.

The system of claim 12 , wherein said memory stores a virtual reality cognitive training program which when executed by the first processor of the system causes the system to display video content to a user, prompt the user to close the user's eyes, provide visual stimulation by controlling the LED light in a preprogrammed sequence while the user's eyes are closed, measure the user's response to the provided stimulus by detecting electrical signals using the electrodes, and provide at least one of audio feedback or visual feedback to the user indicative of a mental state determined based on the detected electrical signals.

14 . The system of claim 13 , wherein said first processor is further configured to determine the mental state of the user based on electrical signals detected by said electrodes which are sensitive to electrical impulses generated by the brain of said user of said system.

15 . A method comprising:

using a head mounted display to display image content to a user;

prompting the user to close the user's eyes;

providing visual stimulation by controlling LED light in a preprogrammed sequence while the user's eyes are closed; and

measuring the user's response to the provided stimulus by detecting electrical signals using electrodes.

16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein said electrodes are part of the wearable system including said headmounted display; and

wherein first and second electrodes contact different sides of the user's forehead providing separate electrical channels used to monitor the user's brain activity.

17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein measuring the user's response to the provided stimulus includes processing electrical signals detected by said first and second electrodes.

18 . The method of claim 17 , further comprising:

providing audio or visual feedback to the user indicative of a mental state determined based on the detected electrical signals.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein

providing audio or visual feedback to the user indicative of a mental state determined based on the detected electrical signals includes varying an audio signal output as a function of a first electrical signal detected by said first electrode, said providing audio or visual feedback to the user indicative of a mental state determined based on the detected electrical signals including varying a visual output as a function of a first electrical signal detected by said first electrode, said visual output being an image or color displayed on said head mounted display or one or more lights mounted in said head mounted display, said one or more lights being separate from said visual display.

20 . A non-transitory computer readable medium including processor executable instructions for controlling a system including a headmounted display to:

operate the head mounted display to display image content to a user;

prompt the user to close the user's eyes;

provide visual stimulation by controlling LED light in a preprogrammed sequence while the user's eyes are closed; and

measure the user's response to the provided stimulus by detecting electrical signals using electrodes.
