Abstract

A fracture fixation plate system for use on a long bone having a metaphysis and a diaphysis, includes at least one end plate having a head portion for the metaphysis, and at least one diaphyseal plate having a first end and a second end with a plurality of screw holes therebetween. The end plate includes mating structure adapted to mate with and securely couple to at least one end of the at least one diaphyseal plate. The system preferably includes several end plates and diaphyseal plates to accommodate anatomy of various sizes. A method for coupling the plates to the bone is also provided.

Claims (33)

1. A fracture fixation plate system adapted for use on a radius bone, the system comprising:

a first plate having a first bone contacting surface and a first top surface, the first plate extending from a first end portion to a second end portion and including a plurality of bone screw holes therebetween;

a second plate having a second bone contacting surface and a second top surface, the second plate extending from a first end portion to a second end portion and including a plurality of bone screw holes therebetween;

a socket formed in the second plate, the socket shaped as a slot sized to receive the second end portion of the first plate, wherein the socket formed in the second plate is adapted to receive the second end portion of the first plate only by sliding the second end portion of the first plate into the socket along a first direction; and

a fastener to secure the first and second plates together at the socket.

The fracture fixation plate system of claim 1 , wherein the socket and the second end portion of the first plate both comprise side walls that limit rotation of the first and second plates relative to each other when the second end portion of the first plate is received in the socket and without the fastener securing the first and second plates together.

3. The fracture fixation plate system of claim 1 , wherein the socket is adapted to accept insertion of the fastener through the socket.

4. The fracture fixation plate system of claim 1 , wherein the second end portion of the first plate comprises a tapered portion, and wherein the socket includes an opening through the second bone contacting surface that opens to a cavity that tapers in width.

5. The fracture fixation plate system of claim 1 , wherein the socket includes an opening through the second bone contacting surface, and wherein a width of the open region is less than a width of the second end portion of the first plate that is adapted to be inserted into the socket.

6. The fracture fixation plate system of claim 1 , wherein the socket and the second end portion of the first plate both comprise side walls that limit rotation of the first and second plates relative to each other when the second end portion of the first plate is received in the socket.

The fracture fixation plate system of claim 1 , wherein the socket formed in the second plate adapted to receive the second end portion of the first plate by sliding the second end portion of the first plate into the socket along a longitudinal axis of the socket, and wherein the socket is shaped to engage and limit the first plate from moving within the socket in directions perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the socket without the fastener securing the first and second plates together.

8. The fracture fixation plate system of claim 1 , wherein the socket comprises three side walls that are sized to engage the second end portion of the first plate.

9. The fracture fixation plate system of claim 1 , wherein the first end portion and the second end portion of the first plate are configured such that either of the first or second end portion can be received in the socket.

10. The fracture fixation plate system of claim 1 , further comprising:

the first plate having a first coupling hole and the second plate having a second coupling hole, the first coupling hole and the second coupling hole configured to be in alignment when the second end portion of the first plate is received in the socket, and wherein the fastener is a set screw sized to be received in both the first coupling hole and the second coupling hole to secure the first and second plates together.

11. The fracture fixation plate system of claim 1 , wherein the second end portion of the first plate can only egress from the socket by sliding the second end portion relative to the socket along a second direction that is opposite of the first direction.

12. A fracture fixation plate system adapted for use on a radius bone, the system comprising:

a first plate having a first bone contacting surface and a first top surface, the first plate extending from a first end portion to a second end portion and including a plurality of bone screw holes therebetween, the first plate further having a first side wall opposite a second side wall, the first side wall extending from the first end portion to the second end portion, and the second side wall extending from the first end portion to the second end portion, wherein the second end portion includes a tapered portion such that the first side wall and the second side wall are arranged in a non-parallel manner;

a second plate having a second bone contacting surface and a second top surface, the second plate extending from a first end portion to a second end portion and including a plurality of bone screw holes therebetween;

a socket formed in the second plate, the socket shaped as a slot having a tapered width sized to receive the second end portion of the first plate, wherein the socket formed in the second plate is adapted to receive the second end portion of the first plate by sliding the second end portion of the first plate into the socket; and

a fastener to secure the first and second plates together at the socket.

13. The fracture fixation plate system of claim 12 , wherein the socket comprises three side walls that are sized to engage the tapered end portion.

14. The fracture fixation plate system of claim 12 , wherein the first end portion and the second end portion of the first plate are configured such that either of the first or second end portion can be received in the socket.

15. A fracture fixation plate system adapted for use on a radius bone, the system comprising:

a first plate having a first bone contacting surface and a first top surface, the first plate extending from a first end portion to a second end portion and including a plurality of bone screw holes therebetween;

a second plate having a second bone contacting surface and a second top surface, the second plate extending from a first end portion to a second end portion and including a plurality of bone screw holes therebetween;

a socket formed in the second plate, the socket shaped as a slot sized to receive the second end portion of the first plate, wherein the socket formed in the second plate is adapted to receive the second end portion of the first plate by sliding the second end portion of the first plate into the socket, wherein the socket includes an open region through the second bone contacting surface, and wherein a width of the open region is less than a width of the socket; and

a fastener to secure the first and second plates together at the socket.

The fracture fixation plate system of claim 15 , the first plate having a first side wall opposite a second side wall, the first side wall extending from the first end portion to the second end portion, and the second side wall extending from the first end portion to the second end portion, wherein the width of the open region is less than a width between the first and second side walls.

17. The fracture fixation plate system of claim 15 , wherein the socket formed in the second plate is adapted to receive the second end portion of the first plate only by sliding the second end portion of the first plate into the socket along a first direction.

The fracture fixation plate system of claim 15 , wherein the socket formed in the second plate adapted to receive the second end portion of the first plate by sliding the second end portion of the first plate into the socket along a longitudinal axis of the socket, and wherein the socket is shaped to engage and limit the first plate from moving within the socket in directions perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the socket without the fastener securing the first and second plates together.

19. The fracture fixation plate system of claim 15 , wherein the socket is adapted to accept insertion of the fastener through the socket.

20. The fracture fixation plate system of claim 15 , wherein the first end portion and the second end portion of the first plate are configured such that either of the first or second end portion can be received in the socket.
