Abstract

A drive can include a positional sensor within an outer housing of the drive so as to provide an output indicative of a position of the drive. The positional sensor can be an inclinometer. The inclinometer can be used for feedback control of an inclination of the drive. The drive can further include control electronics within the same housing, so as to provide feedback control of a motor of the drive. The control electronics can include an input for receiving a requested inclination and can be configured to drive the motor until the inclinometer outputs a signal indicative of the requested angle.

Claims (44)

1. An apparatus for a solar energy collection system, the apparatus comprising:

an inclination sensor configured to detect an inclination of at least one solar energy collection device and output a signal indicative of inclination detected by the inclination sensor; and

only one processor, the processor being in electrical communication with both the inclination sensor and a motor and configured to control the motor to cause the at least one solar energy collection device to pivot about a pivot axis to provide a desired inclination of the at least one solar energy collection device based on the signal output by the inclination sensor, wherein

the inclination sensor and the processor are provided on a single circuit board and enclosed in a cylindrical housing that is attached to and co-axial with the motor, and the housing and motor are configured to be attached to a frame configured to pivot relative to the Earth about the pivot axis and support at least one solar energy collection device.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

an integrated communication module attached to the circuit board and configured to communicate with devices remote from the apparatus via a network.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to receive an inclination command signal, and to drive the motor until the processor receives a signal from the inclination sensor that corresponds to the inclination corresponding to the inclination command signal.

4. An apparatus for a solar energy collection system, the apparatus comprising:

a motor;

a cylindrical housing configured to be attached to and be co-axial with the motor, the motor and the cylindrical housing being attached to a structure that pivots relative to the Earth about a pivot axis, the cylindrical housing comprising

an inclination sensor disposed inside the housing such that the inclination sensor pivots with the cylindrical housing about the pivot axis, the inclination sensor configured to detect an inclination of at least one solar energy collection device and output a signal indicative of inclination detected by the inclination sensor; and

only one processor, the processor being in electrical communication with both the inclination sensor and the motor and configured to control the motor to cause the at least one solar energy collection device to pivot about the pivot axis to provide a desired inclination of the at least one solar energy collection device based on the signal output by the inclination sensor,

wherein the processor and the inclination sensor are disposed on a same first circuit board.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the processor is configured to transmit inclination commands to the motor.

6. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the processor comprises a motor controller configured to control operation of the motor.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the motor controller comprises a second circuit board configured to be electrically connected to the motor and to receive an inclination signal from the inclination sensor.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the first circuit board which is separate from and connected to the second circuit board.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the first circuit board comprises at least a first communications interface configured to transmit a signal indicative of a detected inclination.

10. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the processor is configured to drive the motor to an inclination corresponding to an inclination command signal.

11. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the processor is configured to receive an inclination command signal and an inclination signal from the inclination sensor, and to drive the motor until the processor receives a signal from the inclination sensor that corresponds to the inclination corresponding to the inclination command signal.

12. The apparatus of claim 4 , further comprising:

a frame;

at least one solar energy collection device supported by the frame; and

a driver assembly configured to pivot the frame about a pivot axis, the driver assembly comprising

the housing;

a fixed portion fixed relative to the Earth; and

a pivoting portion rotatably coupled with the fixed portion.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , further comprising:

at least a first support pier fixed to the Earth, the fixed portion being fixed to the first support pier.

14. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the motor is offset from the pivot axis in a direction transverse to the pivot axis.

15. The apparatus of claim 4 , further comprising:

a first gear engaged with the motor such that the motor rotates the first gear about a first rotational axis, the first rotational axis non-parallel with the pivot axis.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 , further comprising:

a second gear engaged with the first gear such that rotation of the first gear about the first rotational axis causes the second gear to rotate parallel to the pivot axis.

17. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the processor comprises an integrated communication module configured to communicate with devices remote from the apparatus via a network.

18. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the inclination sensor is positioned in an outer periphery of the circuit board.

19. A solar energy collection system comprising:

a frame;

at least one solar energy collection device supported by the frame;

a motor;

a cylindrical housing configured to be attached to and be co-axial with the motor, the motor being configured to be attached to the frame and to pivot with the frame about a pivot axis, the cylindrical housing comprising

an inclination sensor disposed inside the housing such that the inclination sensor pivots with the cylindrical housing about the pivot axis, the inclination sensor configured to detect an inclination of the at least one solar energy collection device and to output a signal indicative of inclination detected by the inclination sensor; and

only one processor, the processor being in electrical communication with both the inclination sensor and the motor and configured to control the motor to cause the pivoting portion to pivot about the pivot axis to provide a desired inclination of the at least one solar energy collection device based on the signal output by the inclination sensor,

wherein the processor pivots with the cylindrical housing about the pivot axis.
