Abstract

A minimally invasive intervertebral implant includes a circuitous body defining a luminal axis extending longitudinally therethrough. The circuitous body includes proximal and distal ends oppositely disposed along a lateral axis of the circuitous body. Each of the proximal and distal ends includes an aperture disposed therethrough such that the circuitous body includes a first configuration wherein the proximal and distal ends are at a maximum separation and a second configuration wherein the proximal and distal ends are closer together than in the first configuration.

Claims (35)

1. A minimally invasive intervertebral implant for placement between adjacent vertebrae, comprising

a circuitous body defining a luminal axis extending longitudinally therethrough, the circuitous body comprising a plurality of segments linked by living hinges configured to deform in transition from an open position to a closed position, at least one of the living hinges includes a locking mechanism on adjacent hinged segments comprising a male fitting configured to engage a female fitting to lock the hinge,

proximal and distal ends oppositely disposed along a lateral axis of the circuitous body, wherein:

in a first configuration the proximal and distal ends are at a maximum separation and the living hinges are in the open position;

in a second configuration wherein the proximal and distal ends are closer together than in the first configuration, and the living hinges are in the closed position; and

wherein a transition from the first configuration to the second configuration deforms the circuitous body and the engagement of the male and female fittings are configured to maintain the second configuration subsequent to the transition.

2. The minimally invasive intervertebral implant of claim 1 , wherein the male fitting includes a barbed end and the female fitting includes internal shoulders, wherein in the closed position the barbed end reaches a depth beyond the internal shoulders to lock the living hinge in the closed position.

3. The minimally invasive intervertebral implant of claim 1 , wherein the male fitting includes a barbed end and the female fitting includes multiple sets of internal shoulders at increasing depths, wherein when the barbed end reaches a depth beyond the internal shoulders the living hinge can be locked in any of several positions between the fully open position and the fully closed position.

4. The minimally invasive intervertebral implant of claim 1 , wherein the proximal end comprises an aperture for receiving an implantation tool.

5. The minimally invasive intervertebral implant of claim 1 , wherein the segments having exterior surfaces and longitudinally facing surfaces and at least one longitudinally facing surface of the includes a texture adapted to enhance fixed contact with bone.

6. The minimally invasive intervertebral implant of claim 1 , wherein the proximal end includes a pair of proximally extending slots oppositely disposed in exterior surfaces thereof, wherein the slots are adapted to accommodate prongs of an implantation tool.

7. The minimally invasive intervertebral implant of claim 1 , wherein the distal end is tapered.

8. The minimally invasive intervertebral implant of claim 1 , further comprising an internal groove extending along the lateral axis.

9. A minimally invasive intervertebral implant, comprising

a circuitous body defining a luminal axis extending longitudinally therethrough, the circuitous body comprising a plurality of segments linked by living hinges configured to deform in transition from an open position to a closed position, at least one of the living hinges includes a locking mechanism on adjacent hinged segments comprising living hinges configured to plastically deform for locking in the closed position;

proximal and distal ends oppositely disposed along a lateral axis of the circuitous body, wherein:

in a first configuration the proximal and distal ends are at a maximum separation and the living hinges are in the open position;

in a second configuration wherein the proximal and distal ends are closer together than in the first configuration and the living hinges are in the closed position; and

wherein the plastically deformed hinges are configured to provide sufficient plastic deformation such that the circuitous body maintains the second configuration subsequent to the transition.

10. The minimally invasive intervertebral implant of claim 9 , wherein the proximal end comprises an aperture for receiving an implantation tool.

11. The minimally invasive intervertebral implant of claim 9 , wherein the segments having exterior surfaces and longitudinally facing surfaces and at least one longitudinally facing surface of the includes a texture adapted to enhance fixed contact with bone.

12. The minimally invasive intervertebral implant of claim 9 , wherein the proximal end includes a pair of proximally extending slots oppositely disposed in exterior surfaces thereof, wherein the slots are adapted to accommodate prongs of an implantation tool.

13. The minimally invasive intervertebral implant of claim 9 , wherein the distal end is tapered.

14. The minimally invasive intervertebral implant of claim 9 , further comprising an internal groove extending along the lateral axis.

15. A minimally invasive intervertebral implant for placement between adjacent vertebrae, comprising

a circuitous body defining a luminal axis extending longitudinally therethrough, the circuitous body comprising a plurality of segments linked by living hinges configured to deform in transition from an open position to a closed position, at least one of the living hinges includes a locking mechanism on adjacent hinged segments comprising a contact adhesive on the adjacent hinged segments configured to lock in the closed position;

proximal and distal ends oppositely disposed along a lateral axis of the circuitous body, wherein:

in a first configuration the proximal and distal ends are at a maximum separation and the living hinges are in the open position;

in a second configuration wherein the proximal and distal ends are closer together than in the first configuration and the living hinges are in the closed position; and

wherein a transition from the first configuration to the second configuration deforms the circuitous body and the living hinge contact adhesive is configured to lock the hinge in the closed position to maintain the second configuration subsequent to the transition.

16. The minimally invasive intervertebral implant of claim 15 , wherein the proximal end comprises an aperture for receiving an implantation tool.

17. The minimally invasive intervertebral implant of claim 15 , wherein the segments having exterior surfaces and longitudinally facing surfaces and at least one longitudinally facing surface of the includes a texture adapted to enhance fixed contact with bone.

18. The minimally invasive intervertebral implant of claim 15 , wherein the proximal end includes a pair of proximally extending slots oppositely disposed in exterior surfaces thereof, wherein the slots are adapted to accommodate prongs of an implantation tool.

19. The minimally invasive intervertebral implant of claim 15 , wherein the distal end is tapered.

20. The minimally invasive intervertebral implant of claim 15 , further comprising an internal groove extending along the lateral axis.
