GOLF CLUB HEADS AND METHODS TO MANUFACTURE GOLF CLUB HEADS
Embodiments of golf club heads and methods to manufacture golf club heads are generally described herein. In one example, a golf club head may include a body portion comprising a first material. The body portion may have a toe portion, a heel portion, a top portion, a sole portion, a back portion, a front portion having a face portion. The golf club head may include an interior cavity partially, substantially, or entirely filled with a cavity filling material associated with a coefficient of restitution greater than or equal to 0.7 when an initial velocity is greater than or equal to 100 feet per second. Further, the golf club head may include a mass portion comprising a second material, which may be different than the first material. Other examples and embodiments may be described and claimed.
1 . A golf club head comprising:
a body portion comprising a toe portion, a heel portion, a top portion, a sole portion, a front portion, a back portion, a port, and an interior cavity, the body portion made of a first material having a first density;
a mass portion located at or proximate to the toe portion, and located at a different location than the port, the mass portion made of a second material having a second density; and
a cavity filling portion injection molded into the interior cavity through the port, the cavity filling portion made of a third material having a third density less than the first density and less than the second density, a coefficient of restitution (COR) greater than or equal to 0.8, and a Shore D hardness greater than or equal to 25 and less than or equal to 80,
wherein the third density is less than or equal to at least one-half (½) of the first density, and
wherein the golf club head comprises a volume of greater than or equal to 20 cubic centimeter (20 cc) and less than or equal to 90 cubic centimeter (90 cc).
2 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first material comprises a stainless steel material having a density between 7.0 grams per cubic centimeter (7.0 g/cm 3 ) and 8.3 grams per cubic centimeter (8.3 g/cm 3 ).
3 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first material comprises a stainless steel material having at least one of a tensile strength between 600 million Newtons per square meter (600 Megapascals) and 800 million Newtons per square meter (800 Megapascals) or a yield strength between 500 million Newtons per square meter (500 Megapascals) and 700 million Newtons per square meter (700 Megapascals).
4 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the second density comprises a density greater than the first density.
5 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the third material comprises a thermoset material having a Shore D hardness of greater than or equal to 40 and less than or equal to 65.
6 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the third material comprises a thermoset material having a density of greater than or equal to 1.0 grams per cubic centimeter (1.0 g/cm 3 ) and less than or equal to 2.0 grams per cubic centimeter (2.0 g/cm 3 ).
7 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the third density comprises a density less than or equal to at least one-fourth (¼) of the first density.
8 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the cavity filling portion comprises a material having a COR greater than or equal to 0.82 and less than or equal to 0.88.
9 . A golf club head comprising:
a body portion comprising a material associated with a first density, the body portion having a toe portion, a heel portion, a top portion, a sole portion, a front portion, and a back portion;
a thermoset material comprising a material associated with a second density, the thermoset material having a coefficient of restitution (COR) greater than or equal to 0.8;
an interior cavity at least 50% filled with the thermoset material;
an opening connected to the interior cavity; and
a mass portion comprising a material associated with a third density different than the first density, the mass portion located at or below a horizontal midplane of the body portion, located at or proximate to the toe portion, and located at a different location than the opening,
wherein a ratio of the first and second densities is greater than or equal to 3.0
wherein the golf club head comprises a volume of greater than or equal to 20 cubic centimeter (20 cc) and less than or equal to 90 cubic centimeter (90 cc).
10 . A golf club head as defined in claim 9 further comprising a face portion coupled to the body portion, the face portion having a face portion thickness, and wherein a ratio of a width of the thermoset material and a face portion thickness of the golf club head is greater than or equal to 0.2 and less than or equal to 5.0.
11 . A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the thermoset material comprises a thermoset material having a Shore D hardness of greater than or equal to 25 and less than or equal to 80.
12 . A golf club head as defined in claim 9 , wherein the thermoset material comprises a thermoset material having a density of greater than or equal to 1.0 g/cm 3 and less than or equal to 2.0 g/cm 3 .
13 . A golf club head as defined in claim 9 , wherein the thermoset material comprises a COR of greater than or equal to 0.82 and less than or equal to 0.88.
14 . A golf club head comprising:
a body portion having a toe portion, a heel portion, a top portion, a sole portion, a front portion, a back portion, an opening, and an interior cavity;
a polymer material injection molded through the opening into the interior cavity, the polymer material having a maximum coefficient of restitution (COR) of at least 0.8;
a face portion coupled to the body portion, the face portion having a plurality of grooves and a thickness of less than or equal to about 1.9 millimeters (0.075 inch); and
a mass portion located at a different location than the opening,
wherein the golf club head comprises a volume of greater than or equal to 20 cubic centimeter (20 cc) and less than or equal to 90 cubic centimeter (90 cc).
15 . A golf club head as defined in claim 14 , wherein the thickness comprises a thickness of less than or equal to 1.5 millimeters (0.060 inch).
16 . A golf club head as defined in claim 14 , wherein the opening is partially or entirely located below a horizontal midplane.
17 . A golf club head as defined in claim 14 , wherein the polymer material comprises a COR of greater than or equal to 0.82 and less than or equal to 0.88.
18 . A golf club head as defined in claim 14 , wherein the interior cavity comprises a first width above a horizontal midplane of the golf club head, a second width below the horizontal midplane, and a third width between the first width and the second width, wherein the third width is greater than the first width and greater than the second width.
19 . A golf club head as defined in claim 14 , wherein the interior cavity comprises a first width above a horizontal midplane of the golf club head, a second width below the horizontal midplane, and a third width between the first width and the second width, wherein the third width is greater than the first width and greater than the second width, and wherein the third width is below the horizontal midplane and above the mass portion.
20 . A golf club head as defined in claim 14 , wherein the interior cavity comprises a first width above a horizontal midplane of the golf club head, a second width below the horizontal midplane, and a third width between the first width and the second width, wherein the third width is greater than the first width and greater than the second width, and wherein the third width is above the second groove of the plurality of grooves from the sole portion and above the eleventh groove of the plurality of grooves from the sole portion.
