Abstract

A ceiling fan including a retention system and method of redundantly retaining a ceiling fan can include a ceiling fan motor assembly including a hollow motor shaft at least partially surrounded by a motor housing. A retainer plate is provided at the bottom of the motor housing including an opening. A retainer rod extends through the opening in the retainer plate and secures to the retainer plate. A support cable couples to the retainer rod to suspend the retainer plate from a structure, wherein the retainer plate is configured to redundantly retainer the ceiling fan.

Claims (30)

1. A ceiling fan comprising:

a motor assembly having a hollow, non-rotating motor shaft and a motor housing;

a retainer plate including an opening and recessed portion adjacent the opening, the retainer plate positioned at a bottom of the motor housing; and

a retainer as a retaining rod coupled to the retainer plate, passing through the opening and passing at least partially through the motor shaft, wherein the retaining rod has a cap that abuts the retainer plate at the opening to carry the retainer plate;

wherein the recessed portion adjacent the opening is configured to seat the cap.

2. The ceiling fan of claim 1 wherein the cap is sized greater than the opening in the retainer plate.

3. The ceiling fan of claim 1 wherein the retainer couples to a structure suspending the ceiling fan.

4. The ceiling fan of claim 1 wherein the retainer plate includes an inner portion and an outer portion with the inner portion raised from the outer portion.

5. The ceiling fan of claim 4 wherein the outer portion is configured to carry the motor assembly at the motor housing.

6. The ceiling fan of claim 5 further comprising at least one mounting hole in the inner portion.

7. The ceiling fan of claim 6 wherein the motor shaft mounts to the retainer plate at the at least one mounting hole in the inner portion.

8. The ceiling fan of claim 1 further comprising a support cable coupled to the retainer.

9. The ceiling fan of claim 8 further comprising a downrod coupled to the motor shaft with the support cable extending at least partially through the downrod.

10. The ceiling fan of claim 8 wherein the support cable couples to a structure suspending the motor assembly.

11. The ceiling fan of claim 10 wherein the support cable terminates in a clevis and the retainer terminates in a flat mount end configured to insert into the clevis to couple the retainer to the support cable.

12. The ceiling fan of claim 1 wherein the retainer plate is configured to redundantly carry the motor assembly.

13. A ceiling fan comprising:

a motor assembly having an annular, hollow, non-rotating motor shaft and a motor housing;

a retainer plate positioned at a bottom of the motor housing and wholly below the motor shaft; and

a retainer coupled to the retainer plate, and passing longitudinally along and at least partially through the motor shaft and terminating in a flat mount end;

a support cable terminating in a clevis coupled to the retainer and coupled to a structure suspending the motor assembly; and

a downrod coupled to the motor shaft, with the support cable extending at least partially through the downrod;

wherein the flat mount end of the retainer is configured to insert into the clevis to couple the retainer to the support cable.

14. The ceiling fan of claim 13 wherein the retainer is a retaining rod.

15. The ceiling fan of claim 14 wherein the retainer plate includes an opening and the retaining rod passes through the opening.

16. The ceiling fan of claim 15 wherein an end of the retaining rod has a cap that abuts the retainer plate at the opening to carry the retainer plate.

17. The ceiling fan of claim 16 wherein the cap is sized greater than the opening in the retainer plate.

18. The ceiling fan of claim 16 wherein the retainer plate includes a recessed portion adjacent the opening in the retainer plate configured to seat the cap.

19. The ceiling fan of claim 13 wherein the retainer couples to the structure suspending the motor assembly.

20. The ceiling fan of claim 13 wherein the retainer plate includes an inner portion and an outer portion with the inner portion raised from the outer portion.
