Abstract

An example disclosed printer includes a base; a lid hingedly attached to the base movable between a closed position in which the lid is secured to the base, and an open position in which the lid is at least partially separated from the base; a cavity defined between the lid and the base, wherein the cavity is inaccessible when the lid is in the closed position and the cavity is accessible when the lid is in the open position; a ribbon positioning assembly disposed within the cavity that is pivotably attached to at least one of the lid or the base wherein the ribbon positioning assembly is configured to move between a printing position when the lid is in the closed position, and an accessible position when the lid is in the open position, wherein the ribbon positioning assembly comprises a ribbon tensioning mechanism.

Claims (38)

1. A printer comprising:

a base;

a platen assembly supported proximate the base;

a lid hingedly attached to the base movable between a closed position in which the lid is secured to the base, and an open position; and

a ribbon position assembly disposed within the cavity that is pivotably attached to at least one of the lid or the base wherein the ribbon positioning assembly is configured to move between a printing position when the lid is in the closed position, and an accessible position when the lid is in the open position;

wherein:

a media access gap is defined between the ribbon positioning assembly and the platen assembly for accessing a media supply; and

the media supply is retained within a media supply holder, the media supply holder being variably sized to hold different sized units of media supplies.

2. The printer of claim 1 , wherein the media access gap is sized to receive there through the media supply.

3. The printer of claim 1 , wherein, in response to the ribbon positioning assembly being moved to the printing position, the media access gap is closed to define a media feed path along which media travels during printing.

4. The printer of claim 1 , wherein, in response to the ribbon positioning assembly being moved to the printing position, at least a portion of media and at least a portion of ribbon are captured between a printhead and the platen assembly.

5. The printer of claim 4 , wherein the printhead is positioned to retract away from the media access gap when the lid is moved to the open position.

6. The printer of claim 1 , wherein the media supply is a media supply spool.

7. The printer of claim 6 , the media supply holder having at least two biasing members, the at least two biasing members having a gap between the at least two biasing members, the gap widening when receiving the media supply spool, and narrowing to retain the media supply spool.

8. The printer of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first media guide positioned on the ribbon positioning assembly; and

a second media guide connected to the base, wherein, in response to the ribbon positioning assembly being moved to the printing position, a media path is defined between the first media guide and the second media guide.

9. The printer of claim 8 , further comprising a media sensor positioned within the second media guide.

10. The printer of claim 1 , wherein the printer is a thermal transfer printer.

11. A printer comprising:

a base;

a platen assembly supported proximate the base;

a lid hingedly attached to the base movable between a closed position in which the lid is secured to the base, and an open position;

a ribbon position assembly disposed within the cavity that is pivotably attached to at least one of the lid or the base wherein the ribbon positioning assembly is configured to move between a printing position when the lid is in the closed position, and an accessible position when the lid is in the open position; and

a media supply holder configured to hold a media supply spool, wherein a media access gap is defined between the ribbon positioning assembly and the platen assembly for accessing the media supply spool.

12. The printer of claim 11 , the media supply holder having at least two biasing members, the at least two biasing members having a gap between the at least two biasing members, the gap widening when receiving the media supply, and narrowing to retain the media supply.

13. The printer of claim 11 , wherein the printer is a thermal transfer printer.

14. A printer comprising:

a base;

a platen assembly supported proximate the base;

a lid hingedly attached to the base movable between a closed position in which the lid is secured to the base, and an open position;

a ribbon position assembly disposed within the cavity that is pivotably attached to at least one of the lid or the base wherein the ribbon positioning assembly is configured to move between a printing position when the lid is in the closed position, and an accessible position when the lid is in the open position, wherein a media access gap is defined between the ribbon positioning assembly and the platen assembly for accessing a media supply;

a first media guide positioned on the ribbon positioning assembly; and

a second media guide connected to the base, wherein, in response to the ribbon positioning assembly being moved to the printing position, a media path is defined between the first media guide and the second media guide.

15. The printer of claim 14 , further comprising a media sensor positioned within the second media guide.

16. The printer of claim 14 , wherein the media access gap is sized to receive there through the media supply.

17. The printer of claim 14 , wherein the printer is a thermal transfer printer.

18. The printer of claim 14 , wherein, in response to the ribbon positioning assembly being moved to the printing position, at least a portion of media and at least a portion of ribbon are captured between a printhead and the platen assembly.
