Abstract

A method for automatically delaying playback of a message at a captioning device may include obtaining, at the captioning device, a request to playback of the message. The method may also include, in response to the request, automatically delaying the playback of the message at the captioning device in order to allow the captioning system to receive the audio of the message from a beginning of the playback of the audio of the message.

Claims (43)

1. A captioning device comprising:

a display;

at least one processor communicatively coupled to the display; and

at least one non-transitory computer-readable media communicatively coupled to the processor and configured to store one or more instructions that when executed by the processor cause or direct the performance of operations comprising:

obtaining, at the captioning device, a request to playback audio of a message, there being no captions of the audio of the message when the request is obtained;

in response to obtaining the request and while there are no captions of the audio of the message, automatically delaying the playback of the audio of the message, until the earlier of:

an establishment of a network connection between the captioning device and a captioning system; and

an expiration of a particular time period even if no connection is established between the captioning device and the captioning system;

after automatically delaying the playback of the audio of the message, obtaining, over a network, captions generated by the captioning system using the audio of the message; and

presenting the captions on the display concurrently with the playback of the audio of the message.

2. The captioning device of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise during the automatic delay of the playback of the audio of the message, displaying, on the display, a message notifying a user of the captioning device of the automatic delay.

3. The captioning device of claim 1 , wherein the message is a voice message or a video message.

4. The captioning device of claim 1 , wherein the particular time period is between about one second and about five seconds in duration.

5. The captioning device of claim 1 , wherein the captions are generated by the captioning system using a speech recognition system.

6. The captioning device of claim 5 , wherein the captions are generated by the captioning system using the speech recognition system and a remote call assistant.

7. The captioning device of claim 1 , wherein operations further comprise during the automatic delay of the playback of the message, displaying, on the display, a first message notifying a user of the captioning device of an origin of the message and a second message notifying the user of a date and a time that the message was created.

8. A method for automatically delaying playback of messages, the method comprising:

obtaining, at a captioning device, a request to playback audio of a message, there being no captions of the audio of the message when the request is obtained;

in response to obtaining the request and while there are no captions of the audio of the message, automatically delaying the playback of the audio of the message, at the captioning device, until the earlier of:

an establishment of a connection between the captioning device and a captioning system, in order to allow the captioning system to receive the audio of the message from a beginning of the audio of the playback of the message; and

an expiration of a particular time period;

after automatically delaying the playback of the audio of the message, providing the audio of the message to the captioning system over a network;

obtaining, over the network, captions generated by the captioning system using the audio of the message; and

presenting, by the captioning device, the captions concurrently with the playback of the audio of the message.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the message is a voice message or a video message.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the captions are generated by the captioning system using a speech recognition system.

11. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

during the automatic delay of the playback of the audio of the message, presenting a second message notifying a user of the captioning device of an origin of the message and a third message notifying the user of a date and a time that the message was created; and

after the establishment of the connection between the captioning device and the captioning system, presenting a fourth message notifying the user of an identity of a remote call assistant associated with the captioning system.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the particular time period is between about two seconds and about four seconds in duration.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein the captions are generated by the captioning system using a speech recognition system and a remote call assistant.

14. One or more non-transitory computer readable media configured to store one or more instructions that when executed by one or more computing systems cause or direct the performance of the method of claim 8 .

15. A method for automatically delaying playback of messages, the method comprising:

obtaining, at a captioning device, a request to playback audio of a message, there being no captions of the audio of the message when the request is obtained;

in response to the request and while there are no captions of the audio of the message, automatically delaying the playback of the audio of the message at the captioning device until an establishment of a connection between the captioning device and a captioning system in order to allow the captioning system to receive the audio of the message from a beginning of the playback of the audio of the message;

after automatically delaying the playback of the audio of the message, providing the audio of the message to the captioning system over a network;

obtaining, over the network, captions generated by the captioning system using the audio of the message; and

presenting, by the captioning device, the captions concurrently with the playback of the audio of the message.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the message is a voice message or a video message.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the captions are generated by the captioning system using a speech recognition system.

18. The method of claim 15 , further comprising during the automatic delay of the playback of the audio of the message, presenting a message notifying a user of the captioning device of an origin of the message and a second message notifying the user of a date and a time that the message was created.

19. The method of claim 15 , wherein the captions are generated by the captioning system using a speech recognition system and a remote call assistant.

20. One or more non-transitory computer readable media configured to store one or more instructions that when executed by one or more computing systems cause or direct the performance of the method of claim 15 .
