Abstract

In one general aspect, a method can include determining that a computing device is in a stationary position for a predetermined time, placing the computing device in a first power mode, detecting input from at least one sensor included in the computing device, identifying at least one application to launch on the computing device based on the detected input and on a heuristic-based usage pattern for the computing device, and transitioning the computing device from the first power mode to a second power mode based on the detected input. The transitioning can include automatically launching the at least one application on the computing device. The at least one application can provide content for display on a display device included in the computing device.

Claims (61)

1. A method comprising:

determining, from at least one sensor included in a computing device, that the computing device has remained in a flat, stationary position for a predetermined time;

placing the computing device in a low power state based on determining that the computing device has remained in the flat, stationary position for the predetermined time;

subsequent to placing the computing device in the low power state, detecting input from the at least one sensor, the detected input indicating that the computing device is being moved to a different orientation from the flat, stationary position; and

based on the detected input:

identifying at least one application to launch on the computing device based on a usage pattern associated with the computing device; and

transitioning the computing device from the low power state to a full power state, the transitioning launching the at least one application on the computing device, the at least one application providing content for display on a display device included in the computing device,

wherein the content provided by the at least one application is selected based on the usage pattern associated with the computing device.

2. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein the at least one sensor is an accelerometer, and

wherein determining that the computing device has remained in the flat, stationary position for the predetermined time includes determining that a change in a measured force of acceleration of the computing device was not detected by the accelerometer.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one sensor is an accelerometer, and wherein the detected input indicating that the computing device is being moved is based on the accelerometer measuring a change in a measured force of acceleration of the computing device.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the transitioning of the computing device from the low power state to the full power state comprises activating a location sensor.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the placing of the computing device in the low power state is based on:

determining that the computing device has remained in the flat, stationary position for the predetermined time; and

determining that a time of day is after a certain time of day.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the placing of the computing device in the low power state is based on:

determining that the computing device has remained in the flat, stationary position for the predetermined time; and

detecting a proximity of the user to the computing device.

7. A non-transitory, machine-readable medium having instructions stored thereon, the instructions, when executed by a processor, being configured to cause a computing device to:

determine, from at least one sensor included in the computing device, that the computing device has remained in a flat, stationary position for a predetermined time;

place the computing device in a low power state based on determining that the computing device has remained in the flat, stationary position for the predetermined time;

subsequent to placing the computing device in the low power state, detect input from the at least one sensor, the detected input indicating that a user of the computing device is moving the computing device to a different orientation from the flat, stationary position; and

based on the detected input:

identify at least one application to launch on the computing device based on a usage pattern associated with the computing device; and

transition the computing device from the low power state to a full power state, the transitioning launching the at least one application on the computing device, the at least one application providing content for display on a display device included in the computing device,

wherein the content provided by the at least one application is selected based on the usage pattern associated with the computing device.

8. The medium of claim 7 ,

wherein the at least one sensor is an accelerometer, and

wherein the instructions that cause the computing device to determine that the computing device has remained in the flat, stationary position for the predetermined time include instructions that cause the computing device to determine that a change in a measured force of acceleration of the computing device was not detected by the accelerometer.

9. The medium of claim 7 , wherein the at least one sensor is an accelerometer, and wherein the detected input indicating that the computing device is being moved is based on the accelerometer measuring a change in a measured force of acceleration of the computing device.

10. The medium of claim 7 , wherein the transitioning of the computing device from the low power state to the full power state comprises activating a location sensor.

11. The medium of claim 7 , wherein the placing of the computing device in the low power state is based on:

determining that the computing device has remained in the flat, stationary position for the predetermined time; and

determining that a time of day is after a certain time of day.

12. The medium of claim 7 , wherein the placing of the computing device in the low power state is based on:

determining that the computing device has remained in the flat, stationary position for the predetermined time; and

detecting a proximity of the user to the computing device.

13. A computing device comprising:

a sensor configured to provide data indicative of an ambient environment of the computing device; and

a power manager configured to:

receive first data from the sensor;

based on the first data:

determine that the computing device has remained in a flat, stationary position for a predetermined time; and

place the computing device in a low power state;

receive second data from the sensor subsequent to placing the computing device in the low power state, the second data indicating that the computing device is being moved to a different orientation from the flat, stationary position; and

based on the second data:

identify at least one application to launch on the computing device based on a usage pattern associated with the computing device; and

transition the computing device from the low power state to a full power state, the transitioning launching the at least one application on the computing device, the at least one application providing content for display on a display device included in the computing device,

wherein the content provided by the at least one application is selected based on the usage pattern associated with the computing device.

14. The computing device of claim 13 ,

wherein the sensor is an accelerometer, and

wherein determining that the computing device has remained in the flat, stationary position for the predetermined time includes determining that a change in a measured force of acceleration of the computing device was not detected by the accelerometer.

15. The computing device of claim 14 , wherein the second data indicating that the computing device is being moved is based on the accelerometer measuring a change in a measured force of acceleration of the computing device.

16. The computing device of claim 13 , wherein the transitioning of the computing device from the low power state to the full power state comprises activating a location sensor.

17. The computing device of claim 13 , wherein the placing of the computing device in the low power state is based on:
