Abstract

According to one embodiment, a liquid crystal display device includes a first substrate including a first alignment film covering a pixel electrode, a second substrate including a second alignment film covering a second common electrode, a sealant attaching the first substrate and the second substrate, and a liquid crystal layer held between the first alignment film and the second alignment film, wherein the first alignment film and the second alignment film are formed of a material in which a principal chain is composed of silica (SiO 2 ), and extend at a position overlapping the sealant between an inner face and an outer face of the sealant.

Claims (40)

1. A liquid crystal display device comprising:

an array substrate including a first inorganic insulation film, an organic insulation film stacked on the first inorganic insulation film, a second inorganic insulation film stacked on the organic insulation film, a first alignment film covering the second inorganic insulation film, a pixel electrode between the first alignment film and the second inorganic insulation film in an active area, and a common electrode between the second inorganic insulation film and the organic insulation film in the active area;

a counter substrate including a second alignment film; and

a sealant which is in contact with the first alignment film and the second alignment film and attaches the array substrate and the counter substrate in a seal region,

wherein the first inorganic insulation film is in contact with the second inorganic insulation film in the seal region.

2. The liquid crystal display device of claim 1 , wherein

the organic insulation film includes a side face in the seal region, and

the second inorganic insulation film is in contact with the side face of the organic insulation film.

3. The liquid crystal display device of claim 2 , wherein

the first alignment film covers the side face of the organic insulation film.

4. The liquid crystal display device of claim 3 , wherein

the counter substrate further includes an insulative substrate, and an overcoat layer between the second alignment film and the insulative substrate, and

the overcoat layer includes a groove portion in the seal region.

5. The liquid crystal display device of claim 4 , wherein

the second alignment film covers the groove portion.

6. The liquid crystal display device of claim 5 , wherein

the counter substrate further includes a light-shield layer between the insulative substrate and the overcoat layer, and

the light-shield layer overlaps the groove portion.

7. The liquid crystal display device of claim 6 , wherein

the groove portion reaches the light-shield layer, and

the light-shield layer is in contact with the second alignment film in the groove portion.

8. The liquid crystal display device of claim 7 , wherein

the groove portion is located closer to an active area side than the side face of the organic insulation film.

9. The liquid crystal display device of claim 1 , wherein

the pixel electrode is opposed to the common electrode, and

the common electrode extends over substantially an entirety of the active area.

10. A liquid crystal display device comprising:

a first substrate including a first insulative substrate, a first inorganic film above the first insulative substrate, an organic film stacked on the first inorganic film and including an upper surface and a side face on an inside of a first substrate end portion of the first insulative substrate, a second inorganic film stacked on the organic insulation film and including a first portion covering the upper surface of the organic film and a second portion covering the side face of the organic film, and a third inorganic film stacked on the second inorganic film and covering the first portion of the second inorganic film;

a second substrate; and

a sealant attaching the first substrate and the second substrate, wherein

the first inorganic film is in contact with the second inorganic film in a seal region between the first substrate end portion and the side face, and

the side face overlaps the sealant.

11. The liquid crystal display device of claim 10 , wherein

the third inorganic film covers the second portion of the second inorganic film.

12. The liquid crystal display device of claim 11 , wherein

the second inorganic film extends to the first substrate end portion of the first insulative substrate.

13. The liquid crystal display device of claim 12 , wherein

the third inorganic film extends to the first substrate end portion of the first insulative substrate.

14. The liquid crystal display device of claim 13 , wherein

the third inorganic film is formed of a material in which a principal chain is composed of silica (SiO 2 ).
