Abstract

Apparatuses are disclosed which have an ultraviolet light lamp, a housing transparent to ultraviolet light surrounding the lamp and an exhaust duct extending from a gas outlet of the housing into a support structure that has an outlet disposed along its lower half portion or its bottom surface. Other embodiments of apparatuses are disclosed which have a pulsed ultraviolet light lamp and a sensor system to monitor and determine when to replace the pulsed lamp based on pulse count.

Claims (33)

1. An apparatus, comprising:

a germicidal lamp configured to emit ultraviolet light, wherein the germicidal lamp is the only germicidal lamp in the apparatus;

a housing surrounding the germicidal lamp, wherein one or more sidewalls of the housing are transparent to ultraviolet light, and wherein the housing comprises a gas inlet and a gas outlet;

a support structure, which is distinct from the housing, supporting the germicidal lamp and the housing, wherein the germicidal lamp and the housing are arranged in the apparatus such that ultraviolet light emitted from the germicidal lamp and transmitted through the housing is projected to an area exterior to the apparatus that is above the support structure;

an exhaust duct extending from the gas outlet of the housing into the support structure; and

an exhaust outlet disposed along a sidewall of a lower half portion of the support structure or along a bottom surface of the support structure.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the germicidal lamp and the housing are arranged above the support structure.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the support structure comprises a handle and wheels, and wherein a casing of the support structure extends at least between elevations which are respectively level with the wheels and the handle.

4. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the germicidal lamp is arranged at least 36 inches from the floor of the room in which the apparatus is arranged.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the germicidal lamp is a xenon discharge lamp, and wherein the apparatus comprises a cooling system configured to pass a gas through the housing at a flow rate sufficient to maintain the xenon discharge lamp below its maximum operating temperature.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the support structure comprises a storage compartment disposed below the germicidal lamp which holds components for operating the apparatus, and wherein the apparatus comprises a system for cooling the components.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the cooling system is integrated with another cooling system of the apparatus that is configured to regulate temperature of the germicidal lamp.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a fan for introducing air into the gas inlet of the housing.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an ozone filter within the gas outlet of the housing, the exhaust duct or the exhaust outlet.

10. An apparatus, comprising:

a germicidal lamp configured to emit ultraviolet light in one or more wavelengths at least between 200 nm and 265 nm;

a housing surrounding the germicidal lamp, wherein one or more sidewalls of the housing are transparent to a majority portion of an ultraviolet light spectrum between 200 nm and 265 nm, wherein the germicidal lamp and the housing are arranged in the apparatus such that ultraviolet light emitted from the germicidal lamp and transmitted through the housing is projected exterior to the apparatus, and wherein the housing comprises a gas inlet and a gas outlet;

a support structure supporting the germicidal lamp and the housing;

an exhaust duct extending from the gas outlet of the housing into the support structure; and

an exhaust outlet disposed along a sidewall of a lower half portion of the support structure or along a bottom surface of the support structure, wherein the exhaust outlet is along an exterior surface of the apparatus.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein at least a majority portion of the support structure is below a lowermost surface of the housing.

12. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein at least a majority portion of the support structure is disposed external to the housing.

13. The apparatus of claim 10 , further comprising a reflector below the lamp.

14. An apparatus, comprising:

a xenon flashlamp configured to emit ultraviolet light in one or more wavelengths at least between 200 nm and 265 nm;

a housing surrounding the xenon flashlamp, wherein one or more sidewalls of the housing are transparent to a majority portion of an ultraviolet light spectrum between 200 nm and 265 nm, wherein the xenon flashlamp and the housing are arranged in the apparatus such that ultraviolet light emitted from the xenon flashlamp and transmitted through the housing is projected exterior to the apparatus, and wherein the housing comprises a gas inlet and a gas outlet;

a support structure supporting the xenon flashlamp and the housing, wherein the support structure comprises a storage compartment disposed below and partitioned from the xenon flashlamp, wherein the storage compartment holds components for operating the apparatus; and

an exhaust duct extending from the gas outlet of the housing into the support structure.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 , further comprising an exhaust outlet disposed along a sidewall of a lower half portion of the support structure or along a bottom surface of the support structure.

16. The apparatus of claim 14 , further comprising a system for cooling the components in the storage compartment.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the system is integrated with another cooling system of the apparatus that is configured to regulate temperature of the xenon flashlamp.

18. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the exhaust duct has one end in proximity to the gas outlet of the housing and another end in proximity to the exhaust outlet.

19. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the xenon flashlamp is the only germicidal lamp comprising the apparatus.
