Abstract

In one aspect, a safety pen needle assembly includes a hub having an open proximal end, a needle fixed to said hub, said needle having a distal end for insertion into a patient, and a proximal end extending into said open proximal end of said hub, a shield having a distal opening and an internal thread that is engaged to said hub so as to be manually movable relative to said hub to selectively expose said distal end of said needle via proximal movement of said shield and cover said distal end of said needle via distal movement of said shield, said shield having an open distal end, and a cap that seals the distal opening of the shield.

Claims (32)

1. A safety pen needle assembly comprising:

a hub having a body with an open proximal end;

a needle fixed to said hub, said needle having a distal end for insertion into a patient, and a proximal end extending into said open proximal end of said body;

a shield having a distal opening and an internal thread that is engaged to said body so as to be manually movable relative to said body to selectively expose said distal end of said needle via proximal movement of said shield and cover said distal end of said needle via distal movement of said shield, said shield having an open distal end; and

a cap that is configured to seal the distal opening of the shield, the cap including:

a stem encompassing and not contacting the needle, the stem being configured to stop at a surface of the body; and

a rim configured to frictionally engage the shield; wherein

the rim surrounds an outer circumferential surface of the shield to enclose the needle and secure the cap; and

when the hub is moved to be to be fully threaded into the shield, the stem stops at the surface of the body to disengage the cap from the shield.

2. A safety pen needle assembly as in claim 1 , wherein a second cap seals the open proximal end of the hub.

3. A safety pen needle as in claim 1 , wherein the stem frictionally engages the shield.

4. A safety pen needle assembly as in claim 1 , wherein

the stem is substantially cylindrical.

5. A safety pen needle assembly as in claim 1 , wherein the cap snaps on to the distal opening of the shield via detents.

6. A safety needle assembly comprising:

a hub having a body with an open proximal end;

a needle fixed to said hub, said needle having a distal end for insertion into a patient;

a shield having a distal opening, the shield being manually movable relative to said body to selectively expose said distal end of said needle via proximal movement of said shield, and cover said distal end of said needle via distal movement of said shield; and

a cap that is configured to seal the distal opening of the shield, the cap including

a stem encompassing and not contacting the needle, the stem being configured to stop at a surface of the body; and

a rim configured to frictionally engage the shield; wherein

the rim surrounds an outer circumferential surface of the shield to enclose the needle and secure the cap; and

when the hub is moved to be to be fully threaded into the shield, the stem stops at the surface of the body to disengage the cap from the shield.

7. A safety needle assembly as in claim 6 , wherein the shield includes an internal thread that is engaged to the hub so as to be manually movable relative to the hub.

8. A safety needle as in claim 6 , wherein the stem frictionally engages the shield.

9. A safety needle assembly as in claim 6 , wherein the cap snaps on to the distal opening of the shield via detents.

10. A safety needle as in claim 6 , wherein

the hub including a protrusion that attaches the needle to the hub; and

a distal end of the body includes the surface; and

the surface adjoins a proximal end of the protrusion.

11. A safety needle as in claim 10 , wherein when the cap disengages from the shield, the cap encompasses the protrusion and does not extend in an axial direction beyond the surface of the body.

12. A safety needle as in claim 6 , wherein the stem does not contact an inner surface of the cap.
