Abstract

Stapling assemblies for use with a surgical stapler and methods for manufacturing the same are provided. Three dimensional adjuncts for use with a surgical stapling assembly and methods for manufacturing the same are also provided.

Claims (27)

1. A stapling assembly for use with a surgical stapler, comprising:

a body having a plurality of staples disposed therein, the plurality of staples being configured to be deployed into tissue; and

a three-dimensional compressible adjunct configured to be releasably retained on the body, the adjunct having an undeformed state in which a maximum height of the adjunct is greater than a maximum height of the plurality of staples in a formed configuration when the staples are deployed into tissue, and the adjunct having a plurality of resilient struts such that the adjunct is compressible into a deformed state, the plurality of resilient struts being formed from a matrix comprising at least one fused bioabsorbable polymer;

wherein each strut includes at least one stop element extending therefrom and configured to limit an amount of compression of the adjunct, and

wherein the plurality of resilient struts form a plurality of trusses, each truss being in the form of a planar array with a repeating X pattern.

2. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of struts are interconnected at nodes and configured to bend when the adjunct is compressed.

3. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of struts are positioned to form a lattice structure.

4. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein the at least one fused bioabsorbable polymer is selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic absorbable polyurethane, ultraviolet curable absorbable polyurethane, poly(lactic acid), polycaprolactone, polyglycolide, polydioxanone, poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid), polyglycolic acid, trimethylene carbonate, glycolide, dioxanone, polyester, copolymers thereof, and combinations thereof.

5. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein the adjunct has a tissue-contacting layer, an opposite body-contacting layer, and a structural layer positioned between the tissue-contacting layer and the body-contacting layer.

6. The stapling assembly of claim 5 , wherein at least two of the layers are formed from different materials.

7. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein the adjunct is at least partially coated with a bioabsorbable polymer that is different than the at least one fused bioabsorbable polymer of the matrix.

8. The stapling assembly of claim 7 , wherein the bioabsorbable polymer has a slower degradation rate than a degradation rate of the at least one fused bioabsorbable polymer of the matrix.

9. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the adjunct and the plurality of staples are at least partially coated with one or more antimicrobial agents.

10. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein the adjunct is configured to apply a stress of at least about 3 gf/mm 2 to tissue stapled thereto for at least 3 days when the adjunct is in a tissue deployed state.

11. A stapling assembly for use with a surgical stapler, comprising:

a body having a plurality of staples disposed therein, the staples being configured to be deployed into tissue; and

a three-dimensional compressible adjunct configured to be releasably retained on the body, the adjunct having an undeformed height that is greater than a height of the plurality of staples when the staples are deployed into tissue, and wherein the adjunct includes

a tissue-contacting layer having a first outer surface that is configured to contact tissue and a first inner surface that is opposite the first outer surface,

a body-contacting layer having a second outer surface configured to contact the body and a second inner surface that is opposite the second outer surface, and

a structural layer extending from the first inner surface to the second inner surface, the structural layer having a plurality of resilient trusses that are bendable to allow the adjunct to compress from the undeformed height to a deformed height, the plurality of resilient trusses being formed from a matrix comprising at least one fused bioabsorbable polymer, wherein each truss is in the form of a planar array with a repeating X pattern, and wherein the structural layer includes at least one stop element configured to limit an amount of compression adjunct.

12. The stapling assembly of claim 11 , wherein the at least one fused bioabsorbable polymer is selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic absorbable polyurethane, ultraviolet curable absorbable polyurethane, poly(lactic acid), polycaprolactone, polyglycolide, polydioxanone, poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid), polyglycolic acid, trimethylene carbonate, glycolide, dioxanone, polyester, copolymers thereof, and combinations thereof.

13. The stapling assembly of claim 11 , wherein at least two of the layers are formed from different materials.

14. The stapling assembly of claim 11 , wherein the adjunct is at least partially coated with a bioabsorbable polymer that is different than the at least one fused bioabsorbable polymer of the matrix.

15. The stapling assembly of claim 14 , wherein the bioabsorbable polymer has a slower degradation rate than a degradation rate of the at least one fused bioabsorbable polymer of the matrix.

16. The stapling assembly of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the adjunct and the plurality of staples are at least partially coated with one or more antimicrobial agents.

17. The stapling assembly of claim 11 , wherein the adjunct is configured to apply a stress of at least about 3 gf/mm 2 to tissue stapled thereto for at least 3 days when the adjunct is in a tissue deployed state.

18. The stapling assembly of claim 11 , wherein each planar array includes a plurality of rows of the repeating X pattern.
