Three dimensional adjuncts
View Patent ↗Stapling assemblies for use with a surgical stapler and methods for manufacturing the same are provided. Three dimensional adjuncts for use with a surgical stapling assembly and methods for manufacturing the same are also provided.
1. A stapling assembly for use with a surgical stapler, comprising:
a body having a plurality of staples disposed therein, the plurality of staples being configured to be deployed into tissue, and the body having a first end, a second end, and a longitudinal axis extending therebetween; and
a three-dimensional compressible adjunct formed from a matrix comprising at least one fused bioabsorbable polymer and configured to be releasably retained on the body such that the adjunct can be attached to tissue by the plurality of staples in the body, the adjunct having
a plurality of first struts that are interconnected at joints to form a lattice structure with a plurality of repeating units and a plurality of openings extending therethrough, and
a plurality of internal struts, wherein each repeating unit includes a corresponding internal strut that extends between two opposing side surfaces of the repeating unit, and wherein each internal strut extends at an angle relative to a longitudinal axis of the adjunct so as to allow the adjunct to compress in a first predetermined direction and to limit movement in a second direction that differs from the first predetermined direction.
2. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of first struts each have a substantially rectangular cross-sectional shape configured to limit movement in the second direction.
3. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second direction is transverse to the first predetermined direction.
4. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein the geometry is configured to limit rotational movement of the adjunct about an axis of the adjunct that is perpendicular to the first predetermined direction.
5. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein the adjunct has a tissue-contacting surface and a body-contacting surface that is opposite the tissue-contacting surface, and wherein the tissue-contacting surface and the body-contacting surface move toward one another in the first predetermined direction.
6. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein the adjunct is configured to apply a stress of at least about 3 gf/mm 2 to the tissue stapled thereto for at least 3 days when the adjunct is in a tissue deployed state.
7. A stapling assembly for use with a surgical stapler, comprising:
a body having a plurality of staples disposed therein, the plurality of staples being configured to be deployed into tissue; and
a three-dimensional compressible adjunct formed from a matrix comprising at least one fused bioabsorbable polymer and configured to be releasably retained on the body such that the adjunct can be attached to tissue by the plurality of staples in the body, the adjunct having a plurality of struts that form repeating units, wherein each repeating unit includes an interconnectivity feature that connects two opposing side surfaces of the repeating unit, and wherein the interconnectivity features extend in alternating directions within adjacent repeating units to thereby promote unidirectional compression of the adjunct.
8. The stapling assembly of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of struts are interconnected at nodes, and wherein the repeating units form a lattice structure.
9. The stapling assembly of claim 7 , wherein the adjunct is configured to apply a stress of at least about 3 gf/mm 2 to the tissue stapled thereto for at least 3 days when the adjunct is in a tissue deployed state.
