Abstract

Stapling assemblies for use with a surgical stapler and methods for manufacturing the same are provided. Three dimensional adjuncts for use with a surgical stapling assembly and methods for manufacturing the same are also provided.

Claims (26)

1. A stapling assembly for use with a surgical stapler, comprising:

a body having a first end and a second end, and a longitudinal axis extending therebetween, wherein the body has a slot that extends into and along at least a portion of the longitudinal axis and configured to receive a cutting element; and

a three-dimensional compressible adjunct formed from a matrix comprising at least one fused bioabsorbable polymer and configured to be releasably retained on the body, the adjunct comprising,

a first longitudinal portion having a first plurality of struts interconnected at nodes to form a first plurality of truss structures,

a second longitudinal portion having a second plurality of struts interconnected at nodes to form a second plurality of truss structures, and

a longitudinal channel extending between the first longitudinal portion and the second longitudinal portion; and

wherein the first and second longitudinal portions are configured to be positioned on opposite sides of the slot with the channel extending along the slot of the body to facilitate cutting along the longitudinal channel as the cutting element moves through the slot.

2. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein the channel has one or more openings extending therethrough.

3. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the channel is cut as the cutting element distally advances through the slot.

4. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein the body further comprises a plurality of staples disposed therein, and wherein the plurality of staples are configured to be deployed into tissue such that the adjunct can be attached to tissue by the plurality of staples.

5. The stapling assembly of claim 4 , wherein the adjunct has an undeformed state in which a maximum height of the adjunct is greater than a maximum height of the plurality of staples in a formed configuration when the staples are deployed into tissue.

6. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein the adjunct is configured to apply a stress of at least about 3 g/mm 2 to the tissue stapled thereto for at least 3 days when the adjunct is in a tissue deployed state.

7. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein the adjunct includes a plurality of openings.

8. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first and second plurality of struts are formed of a first fused bioabsorbable polymer, and wherein the nodes are formed of a second fused bioabsorbable polymer that differs from the first fused bioabsorbable polymer.

9. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein the at least one fused bioabsorbable polymer is selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic absorbable polyurethane, ultraviolet curable absorbable polyurethane, poly(lactic acid), polycaprolactone, polyglycolide, polydioxanone, poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid), polyglycolic acid, trimethylene carbonate, glycolide, dioxanone, polyester, copolymers thereof, and combinations thereof.

10. A stapling assembly for use with a surgical stapler, comprising:

a body having a first end and a second end, and a longitudinal axis extending therebetween, wherein the body has a slot that extends into and along at least a portion of the longitudinal axis and configured to receive a cutting element; and

a three-dimensional compressible adjunct formed from a matrix comprising at least one fused bioabsorbable polymer, the adjunct having interconnected planar struts that form a lattice structure having first and second longitudinal portions that are connected by at least one bridging member, wherein the at least one bridging member is configured to facilitate advancement of the cutting element through the adjunct; and

wherein the first and second longitudinal portions each include a plurality of struts interconnected at nodes to form a plurality of truss structures.

11. The stapling assembly of claim 10 , wherein, when the adjunct is releasably retained on the body, the at least one bridging member extends across the slot in a lateral direction relative to the longitudinal axis of the body such that distal advancement of the cutting element cuts through the at least one bridging member.

12. The stapling assembly of claim 10 , wherein the at least one fused bioabsorbable polymer includes a first fused bioabsorbable polymer and a second fused bioabsorbable polymer that is stiffer than the first fused bioabsorbable polymer, and wherein the first and second portions are formed of the first fused bioabsorbable polymer and the at least one bridging member is formed of the second fused bioabsorbable polymer.

13. The stapling assembly of claim 10 , wherein the body further comprises a plurality of staples disposed therein, and wherein the plurality of staples are configured to be deployed into tissue such that the adjunct can be attached to tissue by the plurality of staples.

14. The stapling assembly of claim 13 , wherein the adjunct has an undeformed state in which a maximum height of the adjunct is greater than a maximum height of the plurality of staples in a formed configuration when the staples are deployed into tissue.

15. The stapling assembly of claim 10 , wherein the adjunct is configured to apply a stress of at least about 3 g/mm 2 to the tissue stapled thereto for at least 3 days when the adjunct is in a tissue deployed state.

16. The stapling assembly of claim 10 , wherein the adjunct includes a plurality of openings.

17. The stapling assembly of claim 10 , wherein the at least one fused bioabsorbable polymer is selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic absorbable polyurethane, ultraviolet curable absorbable polyurethane, poly(lactic acid), polycaprolactone, polyglycolide, polydioxanone, poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid), polyglycolic acid, trimethylene carbonate, glycolide, dioxanone, polyester, copolymers thereof, and combinations thereof.
