Abstract

A vacuum cleaner includes a housing having a suction nozzle opening, a source of suction in fluid communication with the suction nozzle opening for generating a working air stream through the housing, and a multiply-adjustable debris collecting blade coupled along the rear of the suction nozzle opening for collecting debris.

Claims (24)

1. A vacuum cleaner comprising:

a housing adapted to be moved across a surface to be cleaned in at least a forward stroke and a rearward stroke, and having a suction nozzle opening;

a suction source in fluid communication with the suction nozzle opening for generating a working air stream through the housing;

a debris collection blade adjacent to a rear of the suction nozzle opening;

a multiply-adjustable coupling between the debris collection blade and the housing and comprising a hinged linkage assembly that includes, a first pivot on a first end of a link arm, the first pivot operably coupled to the housing and a second pivot on a second end of the link arm, the second end opposite the first end, the debris collection blade pivotally coupled to the link arm via the second pivot and the multiply-adjustable coupling is configured to allow the debris collection blade to pivot about the second pivot and articulate relative to the first pivot and wherein the link arm rotates about the first pivot, which moves the interconnected second pivot forwardly or rearwardly about the first pivot for automatic compound adjustment of the debris collecting blade relative to the suction nozzle opening and surface to be cleaned to collect debris on the forward stroke of the vacuum cleaner and to float over debris on the rearward stroke, the debris collecting blade configured to both move vertically relative to the surface and articulate; and

at least one of: a support extending from the first pivot, at least a portion of the support extending below the debris collection such that a portion of the debris collection blade is configured to rest on the support; or a shield portion hingedly connected to the second pivot and the debris collection blade is pivotable relative to the shield portion.

2. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , wherein the debris collection blade comprises a scoop configured to pivot about the second pivot and articulate relative to the first pivot as the link arm rotates about the first pivot.

3. The vacuum cleaner of claim 2 , wherein the support is located at the rear of the suction nozzle opening and formed by a rear edge of the suction nozzle opening, and wherein the support limits rotation of the scoop about the second pivot.

4. The vacuum cleaner of claim 3 , wherein the housing comprises a stop limiting a rearward position of the link arm.

5. The vacuum cleaner of claim 2 , wherein the scoop comprises a ramp.

6. The vacuum cleaner of claim 5 , wherein the scoop comprises a planar scoop and the ramp is defined by an elongated forward-facing planar surface.

7. The vacuum cleaner of claim 6 , wherein the scoop further comprises a glide defined by a backside of the ramp.

8. The vacuum cleaner of claim 5 , wherein the shield portion comprises an arcuate wall extending rearwardly from the ramp.

9. The vacuum cleaner of claim 8 , wherein the shield portion and the ramp are hingedly connected such that the ramp is pivotable relative to the shield portion.

10. The vacuum cleaner of claim 5 , wherein the rear of the suction nozzle opening comprises a support formed by a rear edge of the suction nozzle opening, and wherein the scoop is configured to rest on the support on the forward stroke of the vacuum cleaner.

11. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , wherein the debris collection blade is a thermoplastic blade that extends the entire length of the suction nozzle opening.

The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , wherein the debris collection blade comprises an upper surface and a lower surface joined by a front edge and wherein the multiply-adjustable coupling is configured to pivot the front edge relative to the surface to be cleaned and configured to raise and lower the lower surface relative to the surface to be cleaned.

13. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , wherein the housing further comprises a duct inlet in fluid communication with the suction nozzle opening, and wherein the debris collection blade is disposed beneath the duct inlet.

14. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 and further comprising an agitator provided on the housing adjacent to the suction nozzle opening, wherein at least a portion of the debris collection blade is positioned rearwardly of at least a portion of the agitator.

15. The vacuum cleaner of claim 14 and further comprising a duct in fluidly communication with the suction nozzle opening, wherein the debris collection blade comprises a ramp positioned between the agitator and the duct.

The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , wherein the debris collection blade comprises a scoop having an upper surface and a lower surface, and a front edge joining the upper surface and the lower surfaces, wherein the front edge is configured to float substantially vertically over debris on the rearward stroke.

17. The vacuum cleaner of claim 16 , wherein the debris collection blade comprises a glide defining the lower surface of the scoop.

18. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , wherein the debris collection blade is configured to float substantially vertically over debris on the rearward stroke.

19. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 , further comprising a sole plate forming a bottom of the housing and movement of the hinged linkage assembly is limited by the sole plate.
