Abstract

A fingered member for a downhole tool that includes a circular body made of a composite material, and also a plurality of fingers integral to and extending from the circular body. At least one of the plurality of fingers has an insert carriage disposed therein. The insert carriage is made of a reactive metallic material.

Claims (41)

1. A fingered member for a downhole tool, the member comprising:

a circular body made of a composite material;

a plurality of fingers integral to and extending from the circular body;

a transition zone being a portion of the fingered member where the plurality of fingers begin to extend from the circular body, the transition zone also defined by the presence of an outer circumferential annular groove, an inner circumferential annular groove, and an amount of material between the outer circumferential annular groove and the inner circumferential annular groove, the material having a reduced wall thickness in longitudinal cross-section as compared to the rest of the circular body;

a longitudinal gap formed between respective fingers; and

an at least one of the plurality of fingers comprising an insert carriage disposed therein, the insert carriage being made of a reactive metallic material, and further comprising:

an outer carriage side configured with an at least one insert bore; and

a button disposed in the at least one insert bore, the button being made of steel.

2. The fingered member of claim 1 , wherein the composite material is made from one of filament wound material, fiberglass cloth wound material, and molded fiberglass composite, and wherein an outer surface of the circular body is void of any inserts or buttons.

3. The fingered member of claim 1 , wherein the composite material is made of a cured reactive material formed from an initial mixture composition comprising: a low viscosity cycloaliphatic epoxy resin with an anhydride curing agent; an additive comprising a clay; and a glass.

4. The fingered member of claim 3 , wherein the reactive metallic material comprises one of dissolvable aluminum-based material, dissolvable magnesium-based material, and dissolvable aluminum-magnesium-based material.

5. The fingered member of claim 1 , wherein the reactive metallic material comprises one of dissolvable aluminum-based material, dissolvable magnesium-based material, and dissolvable aluminum-magnesium-based material.

6. The fingered member of claim 1 , wherein the at least one of the plurality of fingers comprises a window, and wherein the insert carriage is disposed in the window.

7. The fingered member of claim 6 , wherein a depth of the window extends an entire thickness of the at least one of the plurality of fingers.

8. The fingered member of claim 7 , wherein the insert carriage further comprises an inner carriage side configured with an abrasive side further comprising mini-serrations.

9. The fingered member of claim 6 , wherein a depth of the window does not extend an entire thickness of the at least one of the plurality of fingers.

10. The fingered member of claim 1 , wherein the insert carriage further comprises an inner carriage side configured with an abrasive side further comprising mini-serrations.

11. A fingered member for a downhole tool, the member comprising:

a body made of a composite material;

a plurality of fingers integral to and extending from the body;

a transition zone being a portion of the fingered member where the plurality of fingers begin to extend from the body, the transition zone also defined by the presence of an outer annular groove, an inner annular groove, and an amount of material having a reduced wall thickness in longitudinal cross-section as compared to the rest of the circular body;

an at least one of the plurality of fingers comprising an insert carriage disposed therein, the insert carriage being made of a reactive metallic material, and further comprising:

an outer carriage side configured with at least one insert bore; and

a button disposed in the at least one insert bore, the button being made of steel,

wherein the reactive metallic material comprises one of dissolvable aluminum-based material, dissolvable magnesium-based material, and dissolvable aluminum-magnesium-based material.

12. The fingered member of claim 11 , wherein the composite material is made from one of filament wound material, fiberglass cloth wound material, and molded fiberglass composite.

13. The fingered member of claim 11 , wherein the composite material is made of a cured reactive material formed from an initial mixture composition comprising: a low viscosity cycloaliphatic epoxy resin with an anhydride curing agent; an additive comprising a clay; and a glass.

14. The fingered member of claim 11 , wherein the at least one of the plurality of fingers comprises a window, and wherein the insert carriage is disposed in the window.

15. The fingered member of claim 14 , wherein a depth of the window extends an entire thickness of the at least one of the plurality of fingers.

16. The fingered member of claim 15 , wherein the insert carriage further comprises an inner carriage side configured with an abrasive side further comprising mini-serrations.

17. The fingered member of claim 14 , wherein a depth of the window does not extend an entire thickness of the at least one of the plurality of fingers.

18. The fingered member of claim 11 , wherein the insert carriage further comprises an inner carriage side configured with an abrasive side further comprising mini-serrations.

19. A fingered member for a downhole tool, the member comprising:

a circular body made of a composite material;

a plurality of fingers integral to and extending from the circular body;

a transition zone defined by the presence of an outer circumferential annular groove, an inner circumferential annular groove, and an amount of material between the outer annular groove and the inner annular groove, the transition zone further defined by the amount of material having a reduced wall thickness in longitudinal cross-section as compared to a wall thickness in the rest of the circular body;

an at least one of the plurality of fingers comprising a metallic insert carriage disposed therein, and further comprising:

an outer carriage side configured with at least one insert bore; and

an insert disposed in the at least one insert bore,

wherein the composite material is made from one of filament wound material, fiberglass cloth wound material, and molded fiberglass composite.

20. The fingered member of claim 19 , wherein the plurality of fingers extend from a portion of the circular body having a greater wall thickness in longitudinal cross-section than that of the transition zone, and wherein the circular body is void of any buttons.
