Abstract

Described herein are intraocular lenses and methods of implantation. In one aspect, the lens includes a shape changing optical element; a force translation element having a first end region coupled to the optical element and a second end region extending towards a ciliary structure, and an attachment portion coupled to the second end region of the force translation element and configured to contact the ciliary structure. The force translation element is configured to functionally transmit movements of the ciliary structure into a force exerted upon the optical element to effect an accommodating and a disaccommodating change of the optical element.

Claims (32)

1. An intraocular lens, comprising:

a shape-changing lens body, an optical axis passing through the lens body when implanted in an eye, wherein the lens body comprises an anterior surface configured to bow along the optical axis of the lens body upon application of a compressive force directed radially inward on a peripheral region of the lens body creating a shape change;

a haptic configured to anchor and center the lens body within a portion of the eye, the haptic comprising:

a first end region attached directly to the lens body; and

a second end region extending at a first angle with respect to the optical axis; and

an accommodating element comprising a plurality of force translation elements, each force translation element comprising:

a first end engaged with the peripheral region of the lens body; and

a second end extending away from the peripheral region of the lens body at a second angle with respect to the optical axis, the second angle different than the first angle of the haptic,

wherein the second ends of the force translation elements are configured to contact a ciliary structure outside of a capsular bag to transmit movement of the ciliary structure during ciliary muscle contraction, and

wherein the first ends of the force translation elements are configured to apply the compressive force directed radially inward on the peripheral region of the lens body to effect the shape change.

2. The lens of claim 1 , wherein the ciliary structure is selected from the group consisting of the ciliary muscle, the ciliary body, a ciliary process, and a zonule.

3. The lens of claim 2 , wherein the second end of each force translation element has an attachment portion configured to contact the ciliary structure upon contraction movements of the ciliary muscle.

4. The lens of claim 3 , wherein the attachment portion has a shape so as not to penetrate the ciliary structure upon contact with the ciliary structure.

5. The lens of claim 3 , wherein the attachment portion is formed of an elastic material.

6. The lens of claim 1 , further comprising a second lens body posterior to the shape-changing lens body and configured to be positioned within the capsular bag of the eye.

7. The lens of claim 1 , wherein the shape-changing lens body is configured to be positioned anteriorly to a natural lens of the eye.

8. The lens of claim 1 , wherein the haptic is configured to be positioned within a ciliary sulcus between a posterior surface of the iris and an anterior surface of the ciliary body.

9. A method of implanting the intraocular lens of claim 1 , the method comprising:

forming an incision in a cornea of an eye;

inserting the intraocular lens into the eye through the incision;

positioning the lens body of the intraocular lens either inside or outside the capsular bag; and

extending the accommodating element towards the ciliary structure such that the second ends of each force translation element abut the one or more ciliary structures.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the haptic is positioned into a ciliary sulcus between a posterior surface of the iris and an anterior surface of the ciliary body.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the haptic is placed in the capsular bag.

12. The lens of claim 1 , wherein the lens body is formed of silicone elastomer.

13. The lens of claim 1 , wherein a material of the plurality of force translation element is the same as a material of the lens body.

14. The lens of claim 1 , wherein the lens body is fluid-filled and the fluid causes the anterior surface to bow along the optical axis upon application of the compressive force directed radially inward on the peripheral region.

15. The lens of claim 14 , wherein the anterior surface has a reduced thickness relative to a greater thickness of a region surrounding the anterior surface.

16. The lens of claim 15 , wherein the region having the greater thickness is resistant to reshaping under the compressive force.

17. The lens of claim 1 , wherein the anterior surface has a resting configuration that has a lower optical power and the shape change creates a higher optical power.

18. The lens of claim 17 , wherein the higher optical power is in a range of about 1 Diopter to about 4 Diopter.

19. The lens of claim 17 , wherein the lens body has an underlying power up to about 20 Diopters.
