Abstract

A device for compensating for the natural shrinkage of building materials includes an expander mounted on a base plate. An opening in the expander aligns with a hole in the base plate to define an axis and receive a shank of a fastener. The expander is biased axially away from the base plate substantially at the axis. The base plate can be securely fastened to a first building member. A fastener can be axially fixed relative to a second building member and the expander but not axially fixed relative to the base plate and first building member.

Claims (30)

1. A building shrinkage compensation device, comprising:

a base plate defining an intermediate hole laterally between opposite ends;

an expander mounted on the base plate having an opening substantially aligned with the hole in the base plate, wherein

the hole and opening define a vertical axis and are configured for receipt of an axial fastener shank, and the expander is biased axially away from the base plate substantially at the axis.

2. The building shrinkage compensation device of claim 1 , wherein the base plate comprises a series of spaced apart teeth on more than one side of the hole, each pair of adjacent spaced apart teeth defining a notch therebetween.

3. The building shrinkage compensation device of claim 2 , wherein the expander includes at least one outer edge that is received in a notch of the base, thereby restricting movement of the outer edge in a direction away from the hole.

4. The building shrinkage compensation device of claim 3 , comprising a bias member for biasing the at least one outer edge toward the hole.

5. The building shrinkage compensation device of claim 4 , wherein movement of the at least one outer edge in the direction toward the hole causes an intermediate portion of the expander to move away from the hole.

6. The building shrinkage compensation device of claim 1 , wherein the opening in the expander is defined by an inner edge, comprising an elongate fastener with an axial shank extending through the opening in the expander and the hole in the base plate, wherein the shank is axially fixed relative to the expander and axially movable fixed relative to the base plate.

7. The building shrinkage compensation device of claim 6 , wherein the opening in the expander is defined by an inner edge and the shank includes a proximal head that abuts the inner edge.

8. The building shrinkage compensation device of claim 6 , wherein the base plate is longitudinally fixed relative to a first building member and the shank is fixed relative to a second building member.

9. The building shrinkage compensation device of claim 8 , wherein the shank is threaded at a distal portion for securely fastening to the second building member.

10. The building shrinkage compensation device of claim 1 , wherein the expander is biased away from the base plate by a separate member not integral to the expander or the base plate.

11. A building shrinkage compensation device, comprising:

a base defining a hole and being attachable to first building member;

an expander mounted on the base and having an opening substantially aligned with the hole in the base when mounted thereon;

a fastener extending from a proximal head portion through an intermediate portion to a distal end, wherein

the intermediate portion of the fastener extends through the expander opening, the base hole and the first building member with the distal end attached to a second building member and the proximal head portion abutting the expander, and a bias member causes the expander and base to be biased away from each other.

12. The building shrinkage compensation device of claim 11 , wherein the expander is formed of two rigid leafs attached together at a hinge.

13. The building shrinkage compensation device of claim 12 , wherein each leaf has an outer edge configured to be radially retained in a notch defined in the base.

14. The building shrinkage compensation device of claim 12 , wherein the hinge defines an apex of the expander and the apex has outer edges that form the opening of the expander.

15. The building shrinkage compensation device of claim 12 , wherein the base defines a plurality of teeth spaced apart from one another with a notch being defined between each adjacent spaced apart tooth.

16. The building shrinkage compensation device of claim 15 , wherein each leaf defines an outer edge with each outer edge configured for receipt within a notch in the base.

17. The building shrinkage compensation device of claim 16 , wherein the bias member is a spring that biases the apex of the expander away from the base.

18. The building shrinkage compensation device of claim 17 , wherein the bias member biases the respective outer edges inward, which thereby causes the apex to be biased away from the base.

19. A building shrinkage compensation device, comprising:

a base plate defining a first pass-through section and being attachable to a first building member;

an expander configured to be mounted on the base plate and defining a second pass through section; wherein

the first pass-through section and second pass-through section collectively define a passage when the expander is mounted on the base plate, and wherein the passage is configured to receive an intermediate portion of an elongate fastener with the expander positioned between a proximal portion of the fastener and the base plate, and wherein the expander and proximal portion of the fastener are biased relatively away from the base plate.

20. The building shrinkage compensation device of claim 19 , wherein the expander comprises two leaf sections joined in a pivoting relationship to one another.
